But, Dave. Where's the fun in that? Would you deprive Gunny of his popcorn fix for the build?

Well I guess I could take pictures of me opening the shoe box, then putting the shoes on, dang, take that big ball of paper out before putting foot in, then lacing up the shoes...Oh yeah, putting the planes in the box. He should be able to wolf down a bag of micro-wave popcorn by then.

Decided to try me luck....yeah, yeah, I know...shop is NORMALLY closed on Mondays ( used to call them Murphy's Days:DevilLaughing:)  but was tired of sitting around...so..

Them clamps had to leave..all 16 of them...first 8 were to glue the bottom to the box...:ChinScratch:

43528380_TheLid2.8removed.JPG.6a1b965e68ac6b0e7d654bc6a8beaa7d.JPG

Which made it easier to get these 8 off the bench...B)

1935107916_TheLid2last4.JPG.f15b4c57668a445a3807ed0adf7046d6.JPG

And..to get the last 4 off, I turned the box over...:OldManSmiley:

Then the real fun began..:SaluteandRun:.sanding dovetails flush, filling a few holes, checking for square...:ChinScratch:

650268722_TheLid2checkedforsquare.JPG.2503e789486e436cb6a3e5bbdbbbacaf.JPG

Looking for high spots...one edge was a bit angled...flatten that..once all for sides were done, and a combo square set up...time to work on the bottom of the box..:Cheer:

182792661_TheLid2flatteningthebottom.JPG.18f4b16eea1b194b6ed97a8bed4f43b8.JPG

Used 2 planes, today...a Millers Falls No. and this WR #62....once the bottom was flat..

1212401727_TheLid2flatteningthetop.JPG.c471a8aa78e2db44fcbed5055ca94a1b.JPG

Flip the box over, and work on the top...there was also a high spot running right down the center of that panel, we have ways...checked again?:WonderScratch:

854164803_TheLid2checkingforahighspot.JPG.e296e6f16a865d9981b07b88a22fb01e.JPG

No gaps?   had taken the time to mark out where to make the saw cuts, again...as all that plane work had about erased the first marks ( why I set that combo square)

Why all this work to get the box flat and square?  :WonderScratch: Well, it will saw better, for one..:OldManSmiley:

Someday, I need to make a new Zero Clearance Overlay..this one has developed a flex..fence set up and ready to go....:ChinScratch:

1732636607_TheLid2afterthecut.JPG.6df54acf45febf62972d70551e90974c.JPG

This is after the cut..one corner was a tad....off...:BangingHead:

291036003_TheLid2lidsawn.JPG.65714d1737c86b0f6ffaf022593e9e4a.JPG

Top left corner...Overlay flexed just enough on the last cut....well, haven't put the planes away just yet...plane down the higher spots level with the rest..check the fit, again..

1807097036_TheLid2checkthefit.JPG.60ac8d56971544f6734a37cf6db3778e.JPG

looks a little?   Small hole at the bottom corners...get a brass corner protector cover-up..there are 4 square holes in the lid...:MachineGun:

1311039287_TheLid2plugs.JPG.ba2a160b090946b4e40667f25cc17669.JPG

Let the glue sit a bit, then trim this flush, and sand smooth..B)

752030761_TheLid.2closethelid.JPG.a68f7e0fab9fe4fdf2f8d3eade3a09bf.JPG

Maybe tomorrow, I can get a bit done?:ChinScratch:

Another 2 hours in the shop, this evening  (1800 to 2000hrs)( That's 6pm to 8pm for you civilians)B)

Fitted a pine insert around the plane..:SaluteandRun:

1034728689_Box2fillerfitted.JPG.a3af5e82cfed3a8043bfffafa3a28c66.JPG

Lot of fancy bandsaw cutting...traced around the plane...Pine is sitting on the plywood "floor"..

1758395684_Box2neededaholedrilled.JPG.131bd54a2967425cc9293e3aae95740a.JPG

Needed a 9/16" hole drilled...got out the cordless drill and a #9 bit..:Cheer:

1326276300_Box2cordlessdrill.JPG.d5d654e139c5b97e0945f2b3200d21e2.JPG

Drill from one face until the snail just starts to poke through turn the board around, and complete the hole,,Had some "trench work" to do..:ChinScratch:

1596566338_Box2trenchwork.JPG.9d334014a602782c603885185401fbbe.JPG

Not really all that deep...

587377439_Box2parts.JPG.1da33fff8add807977a6479a98ae148e.JPG

Rest of the parts...fence's bolt fits down into the hole.   I turned the depth stop around, to press against the fence...lonely little bolt got it's own counter bored hole...Spread some glue, and a few c clamps to hold things until the glue sets up..:OldManSmiley:

1418653234_Box2insertglueddown.JPG.01fe67566817560a8705c1354287ff18.JPG

Set this aside for a bit..while I try to install some hinges...:ph34r:1213706239_Box2hingework.JPG.2a77227cd1784de1e9f80bc6d56cc384.JPG

One done.   Had to offset it a bit.  Made the other one match that.  A better fitting screwdriver, old chisel, mallet and a drill for pilot holes...glue had set enough..see IF I can attach the lid to the box..maybe?:OldManSmiley:

1274537314_Box2pilotholedrill.JPG.fc070e07307f748c93c22cd70bd58e47.JPG

Worked for me..Clamp to keep the box in one spot while I worked it over...

1226305388_Box2leveledthefront.JPG.73b6578dbb162f6883e1a6a13af5cb5a.JPG

Lid and box were on different levels...we have ways ...to level the playing field :MachineGun:

Latch installed..

When the lid closes, it press the fence into place.   Fence holds the rod in it's trench.  Lid also keep the plane in place.   Hmmm..B)

I guess this counts as a PIP?   Had to leave the lids opened...

840355282_BoxesthePIPOpened.JPG.63f3e4bf284993232564bb714cd4294c.JPG

To let them air out a bit....takes forever to get that smell out....doubt if I'll varnish the insides..

Going to try label making 101 later today.:WonderScratch:.then varnish the outsides..

Stay tuned..:cowboy:

thinking more towards the bottom one, but...maybe use both?   One for the fancier box?

Ran this through the printer....it had a different take on that red...

Maybe a touch of 40's Art Deco?

Fun part will be cutting these out...to apply to the lids...also copied a few smaller labels, to see IF they will fit on an end of the boxes...
