November 21, 20214 yr Popular Post Hauled those three planks to the shop, this morning...also a full Laundry Hamper....we have Laundry Detail, again.....decided to just stay down there, and wait on the washer to get done...and transfer the load to the dryer.....oh, and make a wee bit of sawdust...for 2 hours... Was trying to lay out a couple cross cuts. Wasn't planning on using the tablesaw.. Thinking this might just be an assembly table? Crosscuts? We have ways... Stanley No. 358...best way to cut 5-1/2" wide stock..square.. Tight off the saw, no "shooting board" required 4 cuts...from two planks...tried to lay out for a plywood bottom panel... Guess I'll need the tablesaw, anyway... Kept thinking this is a might too tall? Eh...could be. Unless there was going to be a stack of the planes...also noted that the length was off just a tad...can't fit 2 such planes in there... made a few more marks...ripped for width...and now have enough parts for 2 boxes... And brought out the "Usual Suspects" for doing Finger/Box Joints... Of the 3 planks, I had two cut-offs left over, and one full length plank....decided to make one panel for the lid....and see how that works out... At full width they were a bit too wide as a pair,, and way too narrow as singles...laid out for the best grain match...laid the box end down at one end...and marked where to remove the excess...which is what you see here. Before I could glue these 2 together... In this shop, I run the jointer over the wood, not the other way around...then some glue, cauls, and clamps.. Will let this sit a while...have corners to make joints for... Marking gauge set to the thickness of the boards...darken with a pencil so I can see the lines...chisel to set the spacings.... Marked for where the waste will be...doing both of the long sides this way...use a square to carry the lines around a few corners.. about this time, the two were separated...easier to work on one at a time...drop that one lower in the vise...saw a few lines...doesn't matter if I leave a line, cut a line, or split a line with the saw.. As once the waste is gone, this becomes a lay out for the other part of the corner to match...THEN lines will matter more.. Knife a base line.. Both on the outside face, and the inside face...once I figured out which was which, and marked them, along with "Top" and Bottom..clamp this down outside face up.. Chop down about half way...leave a little porch for support...flip the board over... Washer was done, transfer the clothes to the dryer... Chisel to finish the chop...do NOT get greedy,,,chop a bit, peel that bit off, chop again...repeat until a little cube flies out past you... Use these to lay out the matching fingers....just trace around the fingers...mark the waste...and saw and chop on the waste side of the line...the more line you leave, the tighter the joints...time for a test fit... Not too hateful? First one is usually the worse...they get better each time...square corner? Seems to be... And that was quite enough fun for one morning...almost time to watch the football game Stay tuned
November 21, 20214 yr Popular Post Good start for "plane" boxes. Hope you remembered to get laundry out of the dryer before reappearing above ground?
November 21, 20214 yr Popular Post 2 hours work! Takes me that long to find the pencil I was just using!

November 22, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Ok...figured I an make one corner joint in about...15 minutes or so.....wound up putting in an hours worth of work today...counting stopping to take a few photos...but..Corners #2 through #4 are now done.... Corner #2, the long side of the box, marked as to the inside and the corner number.. Trace around the #2 fingers,( and NOT mine) to start the layout...then a square... Note all the "notes" made on the inside faces. Then a bit of sawing and then chopping, then a test fit.. Nice when I NEED a hammer to assist the assembly...as for #1? Looking like I just MIGHT get the hang of these...#3? Which leaves corner #4, right? All 4 are done, case is square, even...somebody will have to sand off all those markings on the inside? I'll wait until AFTER the glue up.. Need to either work on Box number 2, or just go ahead and finish the first one up...we'll see Stay tuned..
November 22, 20214 yr Popular Post Looking good so far. I'll be here tomorrow same time, same station. BTW, you get those clothes you left in the dryer yesterday?
November 23, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Re-checked the plywood panel for the bottom of the box....one long edge was tapered..set the saw to the narrow end's width...and buzz the excess off,,,try again.. I also set up that Craftman (Sargent) #79...the one that IS complete..so next Laundry Detail..I can make a few rebates to house this panel in... Stay tuned..

Stay tuned.. I'm watching and learning. Plus I need a complete tune-up...not just missing on a few cylinders, I'm pretty sure I'm missing some cylinders. BTW...don't forget the laundry when you go down

November 24, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Usual Suspects.. One on the left acts as a Shoulder plane, the one one the right acts as a rebate plane... Test fit of the bottom panel... Something like this...checking as I went along, today ( no laundry to do, though)as sometimes things were a bit.."off" That is why the shoulder plane is used... Spent enough time IN the shop today...just over an hour, that I even worked up a sweat...
November 25, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Ok...pine panel for the lid...came out of the clamps, today.. Needing a squared end, and then cut for length...then ripped for width...took a bit...but.. All squared up, and close to the size needed. laying out for the rebates on the end grain first....Can't get the spurs to rotate down...we have ways... Knife the line about 5-6 times...still wasn't quite deep enough? Hmm... Works like a charm...then the fenced #79 is back to work.. Goal was to leave just enough to match that #12 cutter, that will be making the grooves..Doing the end grain first, so the long grain on the sides can clean things up.. . Had to add that clamp...panel wanted to hop of the bench ( did once)... .The box was clamped up.. To make sure the bottom panel fit....and to get half of the clamps set up for the main glue up...Friday, maybe..nice to have them all ready to use.. Took the lid to the box, and set it in, upside down... To check the fit....not too loose to rattle, and not too tight. Needed to get the 45 all set up, next.. That bolt in the fence..is called a Micro-adjust, where you can fine tune where the fence will be...set by hand, the fence was NOT going to go where I wanted it to be....Micro-adjust to that spot, and lock it down... So...next time IN the shop, I'll plough a few grooves, and maybe glue all this together? Had to stop for the day...leg therapy....and that was cut short, due to BP issues.....just not feeling all that great.. Stay tuned...might be Friday before any more shoptime...

November 27, 20214 yr Author Popular Post BP issues resolved. Back on Laundry Detail, today ( almost like drawing K.P.?) dry fit taken apart...Stanley 45 all set and ready....need.. A way to hold each side still, long enough to plough a groove. Block in back sits IN the rebate...a screw on each end locks the part in place. green lines? A way to check that the groove will be in the top edge (T) and this is in the inside face,,,wax up the plane... Elbow Mac? Results, besides a messy floor? The way these are supposed to look...but, just in case. . Panel is dry fitted into each groove....had one groove that wasn't deep enough. Got the 2 shorter ends done, reset the jig for the longer side pieces.. That blue item in the background is a pencil sharpener...comes in rather handy, it does...more dry fitting. Hey, 3 out of 4....Went back and ran the WR #62 around a bit...looking for a better fit... gathered a few helpers and a bottle of glue... Glass of water with an "Acid" brush to smear the glue around...mallet? What do you think... Then a bunch of clamps shows up.. Plywood panel is glued in place, the Pine Panel will just "float" along...I even remembered to mark WHERE to saw the lid off, once the glue has cured... I used the pine panel to mark roughly how long to cut a piece for Box #2's lid....was a tad too narrow...so, happen to have the cut-off from the other panel... Slid it around until the grain was a close match...Mitre Box to do the trimming, this time... Fairly close...glue, clamps, and 3 pairs of cauls...I want this to be FLAT... Bench vise as a 3rd hand....comes in handy, somedays... parts for the sides and bottom of Box #2. . That be a bevel gauge..will use that to lay out a few dovetails...Fancy plane = Fancier Box...need to tell which #79 I am getting of the shelf... Waiting on Laundry...waiting on glue to cure... Stay tuned...
November 29, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Decided to do a wee bit of work, this evening....waited until after the Bengals were done. Pine panel came out of the clamps first, because I needed my bench back... Had a few issues...yes there is a glue joint... Issue Resolution Device.... aka..Millers Falls No. 9, Type 4...was working my way across to that chip-out...may leave this as the inside face....set this aside for a while..next? Box was de-clamped...all them fingers that were sticking up, were sanded flush, then the hand plane to clean up the sides...and.. The edges around that panel were a tad higher than the panel...and there was a high spot in the panel...we have ways.. WR #62, works great at jointing stuff...not so well with flat panels...so..used both plnes...plywood bottom needed sanded level, as well, because the next operation need this box to stand up perfectly vertical... Zero Clearance Overlay, because the saw's throat plate dips down a hair...Red arrow points to the "cut line" that I need to split...run the box through on all 4 sides...trying to keep this thing standing straight up.... Red circles point to where things got a bit ..off....open the lid.. "Open sez Me!" Hmm, I think I can fix that....Shorter ends, I used the No. 9, had a hump in the middle..must have "waddled" through the cut. The longer sides...the #62 again...keeping the heel on an end....and level the sides. Then the lid was next.. Then checking how close I was to matching the box to the lid.. Almost done...high spot at the corner, yet.....decided to check IF the plane will fit in this box.. Flush with the top edge of the box...Need a keeper to make sure this doesn't go rattling around... Something like this? Need to notch inside that red line, so the plane will lay flat, and not move... Bandsaw to make that notch...smear glue all over the keeper's back, and clamp in place...added a second keeper to better support the handle. and glued and clamped that...set this aside....Next time it will be hinges and a latch... With the bench all nice and cleaned off...not for long... This pile of Toys showed up....a 6" bevel gauge (Stanley SW) Menard's Utility knife, couple of squares, a pencil ( or 3) and that Stanley SW No. 68 Marking gauge....guess the next box will get through dovetails....Laid out the pins, first.. Since that is how I do dovetails.....I thought I might try a special saw, this time around.. yep, it is Special, alright...The bar is set to cut down to 1/2" deep, right now...saw blade has 2 sets of teeth...coarse ones aren't getting used, this time.. Them FINE teeth are....Saw is By Geo. H. Bishop, and is a No. 10 Left foot was getting bad cramps in the toes, making it hard to walk (working too hard?) and the back of the right thigh wanted to join in with the "fun" Uncle Charles is in the house. Decided to hobble upstairs and call it a night.. Stay tuned..
