August 13, 20214 yr Popular Post Happy Friday The Thirteenth Everyone! Here "Two Weeks From Anywhere" we're taking a break from a rough weather week. Those 100°+ Heat Index days were quite miserable. Have a few downed trees to clean up after Tuesday, and Wednesdays high wind storms that came through after I got the Pilot running again. Also have to go pick up some angle iron, square steel stock, etc., that the nephew wants to get rid of. It's some pretty good sized pieces and the price is right. Hopefully the yard's dried out enough to get at the trailer. So, What's on Your Weekend Agenda?
August 13, 20214 yr Popular Post Well, I had plans to do some stuff in the shop related to making a pepper mill, but Mother Nature has intervened. Our peaches are ripening at a furious rate so I may be trying to get some of them put away for the winter. It's been a banner crop this year.

August 13, 20214 yr Popular Post Checked on my bowl drying progress yesterday evening with the meter: The soapy water soaked bowls are still very wet, but showing zero cracks and very little ovaling. The larger air dry and sealed bowls are showing medium 15%ish. The 3 small air dry and sealed bowls are showing <10%. Ready for 2nd turning Will try to get those on the lathe for the 2nd turning. Given the amount of material left and the amount of ovaling these may be impossible to get round again. But at least, I'll get to try out the jamb chuck I made last week. The latest bowl packed in shavings shows no change in moisture in a weeks time. Still have a pile of logs to work through. If I have time, I'll get one of those broken down into blanks. .40 Edited August 13, 20214 yr by forty_caliber
August 13, 20214 yr Ordered a 8 inch cast iron sewer cover with mounting ring. They shipped in undersized box, zero packing. So surprise, it's cracked. Called and set up a new one, specified that Packing material and Proper size box were imperative to receive a cast iron product undamaged. This is a plumbing supply store online, you would think they know this stuff. What do I know?

I took one I'm preparing out of the dryer yesterday, flame box elder soaked for 3 days shavings for 19 days hot box for 9 days I'm using a kitchen scale to test for dryness. Loss was less than 1 gram in a day when I took it out of the hot box. Not a really big bowl, about 8" in diameter but the warping is virtually non-existent Drew a line around the circumference, then used a compass line to compare- Pretty happy so far Edited August 13, 20214 yr by lew

Not sure of the exact variety but they are yellow freestone.....something makes me think they are Elberta peaches. We lived here 5 years and they did this the first year we were here, and then again this year. I think the cold winter zapped the in between years.

The local peach crop was virtually decimated last year. A late freeze killed off all of the buds.
August 13, 20214 yr Author Popular Post @Gunny Heck even the small parts I ordered for the Pilot came in an oversized box with packing that barely fit in the mailbox. I could hold all of the parts in one hand.

August 13, 20214 yr Popular Post Apparently my BIL was offended when I sent this picture to my sister. Suggesting this method to motivate him properly. Sister sent to my Mother when then sent me text msg to NOT do that. Seems she saw picture and snorted her diet coke laughing. Picture in question.

August 14, 20214 yr Popular Post I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend in their shops! I'm living my dreams through you all. Lately it's been all about my mother, elderly, one thing after another is happening in her declining health. Today she was transferred from a post acute care center to hospice care in a board and care home. She has to have 24 hr attention, our goal is to make her as comfy as possible and we are visiting her daily now. I have not been on TPW as much as I would like, because my attention has been needed for mom since April. You all are doing a wonderful job keeping the digs up to par and the ranting and raving and sharing projects has been steady and awesome, thank you all! I know there are many here who have walked in our shoes with an elder parent, I never knew how tough it can be till I am now doing it. Be safe in all you do folks, and @steven newman, if I may impose on you to do another Monday Morning topic, I'd sure appreciate it sir.
August 14, 20214 yr Popular Post @John Morris Mimi and I are sending prayers to you and your family. We know all too well what you are experiencing.

August 14, 20214 yr Popular Post No outside work for a day or two. This week working outside 2-3 hours a day has wiped me out like a old mop. Worked on handles for a Fire Stix I make for shows. Worked on a prototype seam ripper today and think I am ready on this as a new product for shows.
