August 10, 20214 yr Author Popular Post 3 hours IN the shop, this morning...made Murphy haul a plank to the shop, then fired him...need Security to walk him out the door.. T-shirt is threatening to run away...even though the shop fan was on HIGH, and blowing right on me...Drawer #1 is out of the clamps, and fitted to it's opening. Drawer #3 is now IN the clamps...have a bunch of photos to get processed up...be back with those.. Stay tuned..
August 10, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Hmm...I don't know....maybe too big? Or, just about right sized? One per drawer? Drawer #1 has been fitted.. And..drawer #3 is in the clamps.. Hard to see past the Forest of Clamps....22 photos done,..was a busy morning... More than one way to do dovetails.... Blend of machine and hand tool work... I might get the hang of these, someday making them Groovy Shavings.... Is it Dado, or..dodo? Depends on which day it is.. back for the drawer...needed resawn...even then, I had to bevel the ends to fit the dados Drawer #3 all ready to glue up... Done for today...may try again tomorrow? Stay tuned

And now comes Murphy's wrongful termination attorneys. I took the easy route on Monday & just bought him a Greyhound ticket from Y-town to Columbus.
August 11, 20214 yr Author Popular Post I suppose I should have waited...until the day before Murphy's 20 year retirement party..to fire him... need a plywood panel, before drawers 4 and 5 can be done...waiting on the rain to go on through...
August 11, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Plywood has been bought....sitting upstairs right now...tis a wee bit damp in the shop, at the moment.. Gulley-washer came through, Made the Dungeon Creek rise...gets a bit slick IF I try to use a plane... Let alone this big guy... Got the issues with the Stanley #45, Type 4's spurs resolved...for now.. That rip saw was for the drawer's back...would be too thick, otherwise.. And...I STILL had to bevel the ends. Drawer front laying there has a big knot... Made milling a groove a bit rough..The other side of the drawer also had issues.. That be a split going on...Waiting on a dry floor (tomorrow?) and cut the plywood...and maybe a glue-up? Got tired of digging drawers out, to open them...plus, one drawer was trying to cup a bit...we have ways... Now that this is sharpened back up, cleaned out, and tuned up...it MIGHT actually do it's job The fix to getting drawers opened? 33 is awaiting it's handle ( one per..) and we are waiting on drawer #4 to get done...Needs dovetails milled/chopped..bottom cut to size...and maybe a glue-up? was a long, strange day, today...2 planes fixed up...wading around in a creek...need a NAP. We'll see how tomorrow goes... Stay tuned...
August 12, 20214 yr Popular Post Those handles look good. I take it this is something more than a shop cabinet.
August 12, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Upstairs tool chest....needs to be a little more dressed up....
August 12, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Ok...Thursday's Follies....5 minutes short of 3 hours in the shop... had to face plane drawer #3... Wanted it a bit smoother before the handle goes on..shavings? I had marked and drilled the holes for the handle...then used the plane to smooth things out, and erase the pencil lines.. A Stanley Fat Max screwdriver to install....the other one on the bench... By Lutz, didn't have the right tip handy, oh well... Third handle is now on....yes, that be the "Shop Fan"....kind of dinky... Need to mill dovetails..the Hybrid Way...setting up...pins first? Line the first socket up with the groove for the drawer bottom..so the tail will cover it. Other end of the front, this will be the top socket...I rotate the blank around at each setting... That be the start line...and.. That be the STOP line. Each socket means I have to move the fence a bit... And keep moving a little bit. Moved all the way over to do the last socket.. Before moving back a bit, to do the last socket...added the guide bar, to keep things from getting"squirrely " All done on both ends...need to mark the tails, next.. Plywood to hold the drawer side at the proper height...just need a mark where the cuts will start, and where the baseline will be..stand the side piece up, sharp pencil to make the marks... Bevel gauge is pre-set to the angle the dovetail bit uses...Making sure the lines are straight...mark the waste side of the lines... Carry the lines around. then carry this over to the bandsaw..we have cuts to make.. Bring it back to the bench, clamp it down...and cut a baseline knife wall....ready to chop? I chop half way down, leave a little to support the ends...flip this over.. And finish the chops...test fit? When you NEED a mallet, I guess these are tight enough? Rinse and repeat for side #2..test fit that.. MIGHT need a bigger hammer?...Test fit the back...had an issue.. Back was a hair too wide..as in top to bottom wide....we have ways.. joint a little off the top...then cut the plywood panel for the bottom of the drawer..take a chance on a full dry fit? Not too hateful...time for. . Bottle of glue, and a brush to moosh the glue around with..and a forest of clamps...and a couple cauls, this time around.. And THAT will do it, for today's follies one more drawer to cobble together, then work on a lid of some sort.. Stay tuned..
August 14, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Ok..Drawer #4 came out of the clamps, last night....tried to slide it into the case...the bottom edge of the front of the drawer was hitting the drawer divider there...we have our ways... A few more test fits, until.. Now...there has been a few complaints, about the size of those handles...so, dug up another bag of Yard Sale parts... Hmm..any better? because this is what I'll use.. Good thing I have 2 more of them handles left...also on Friday night.. This is the drawer front for Drawer #5...was way too rough on BOTH faces...we have ways.. Then went ahead and got the groove thing going.. And THAT was quite enough for Friday night Stay tuned...I spent 3 hours today, on Laundry Detail...means 3 hours of Shop Time, too
August 14, 20214 yr Author Popular Post So...had Laundry Detail this morning...so, from 0915 to 1235..I was also IN the shop..keeping an eye on the washer and dryer of course.. Sides for the drawer: Needed planed smooth, from this.. No..that ain't "curl"...Plane to smooth that out.. There now, that looks a bit better? Then, just like the Drawer front, they both needed a groove ... Although, the other side part turned into a noodle machine. . Then they both got a dado milled... Took a couple of steps, to get here...first, I drag that plane backwards a few times, to mark where the dado will be. Then it goes over to the Stanley #358 mitre box, and I make 2 cuts, using those 2 score marks as a guide...then back to the bench and let this plane do it's job....Next...back to that router table device...was a little different spacing.. Last of 5 sockets being milled...then trace out for the tails..and cut them..( hopefully a little better than last time) Nice part about doing it this way..I get to sit down on the shop stool for a bit... Again, needed the hammer to drive these into place....was able to cut the plywood bottom to size.. Still had the dang bar code label on it...since planed off....Needs a back, though. Turned out, I had to cross cut a plank to get the length needed, then ripped for the width needed ( and change the washing over to the dryer, too) and then some resaw work.. Height of blade was almost exactly the right height, no overlap... like before, I still needed to bevel the ends for a better fit... That gap? When the glue and clamps gets there, it will close right up....drawer side is merely leaning out a bit.. So, a hammer, a brush, and a cup of water to keep the brush in...the bottle of glue....sides were glued and hammered into place on the bench, first...then the bottom was slide in, then glue on the ends and one edge of the back...and then this forest of clamps shows up.. Can never have too many clamps, right? Let this mess sit a day...then both drawer #4 and #5 will need their handles installed... Then..maybe I can start on a lid? Stay tuned..Dryer is done..unload and hauled back upstairs...I am done for today..
August 15, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Calling today's Shop time The Sunday Funnies....as someone must have thought it funny having to fight through a few simple tasks Trying to haul a plank to the shop....was about 6'4"...to my 5'10".....and I think it hit just about everything it could on the way Set up table saw ( needed the bench for other tasks) to cross cut the plank a few times...and...of course there is a knot I can't just cut around.. Yeah....missed it by that much, Chief. Edges were a mixed bag...some rough, some wavy and rough, some tapered, wavy and rough. None of them were parallel to another...we have ways.. Trying to set the straightest edge against the fence ( good luck ) and barely peel away the worst on the other edge...reset the fence, and return the favour to the other edge...worked on all three boards, until they all looked straight..then clear off the tablesaw, and do a little lay out.. In that I laid these 3 out, until the best grain match happened by I think this will do? Let this sit until Tuesday... Other task? was to install 2 handles, 1 per drawer...issues with a drill bit...Awl starter hole..or a pilot hole? Didn't mater to that drill bit...it was going just where IT wanted...Add least that handle had it's bolts with it....#4..Done...#5...needed a little extra work.. Gaps needed filled.. Wanted to plane the pencil marks off from installing the handle..plane had ideas of doing tear out instead...sanded things down...when I could keep the sand paper ON the sander...sheesh..tried the drawer in it's new home..was getting stuck before it could close all the way..had a high spot.. Had being the operative word. At the back of the drawer, it needed a curve carved in... These are to help start a full drawer into the case... Handle for Drawer #5? need to cut two bolts down to size..reshape the ends a bit, and get them to start into the handle...same issue with the drill...handle to assist the handle into it's place,,,crank the bolts down tight! Not in the mood for "Gentle" now.. Then slid the drawer into the case.. Grabbed my camera, and closed down the shop...see ya Tuesday Then I can see about building that lid.... Stay tuned Pipe clamps..how hard is it to put 2 such clamps on a flat surface, and NOT have them both try to roll away at the sight of a board Finally got the "bottom 2" to stay put while I apply glue to the boards, moosh them around a bit..and start to clamp them up, just enough that I could walk around pick up a third pipe clamp, slap it down on top of the growing mess, and clamp it tight....then add cauls and c clamps to the ends...and tighten the entire mess down....should NOT be this hard of work, to glue up a 3 board panel..unless it is a Monday
August 16, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Ok..We haft a PLAN!.....Moose & Squirrel Delivery Service dropped off an envelope...marked TOP SECRET... Inside it was 2 sheets (to the wind?) of paper...one is filled with all sorts of measurements .. Apparently to figure out just where to cut a panel into the required 5 pieces...then a diagram... All based on a saw kerf of 1/8"....the 4 outside pieces get a groove milled, then the "fold" down to form a skirt around the flat panel. It has a 1/4" tongue milled on all 4 edges...this will fit into the grooves in the skirts....in theory So..starting tomorrow, I'll remove the clamps, flatten the panel....and then set up to do some cutting up Hopefully the level of cussing doesn't get too high....like it was over the past weekend Now, IF I can just keep Boris and Natasha out of my shop...don't want them stealing The Plan.. Stay tuned..
August 17, 20214 yr Author Popular Post A "Plan B" may be needed.....having trouble with the ends of the panel Trouble seems to be in some knot-infested grain Might do a bit differently on the ends, and at the corners...we'll see, and...there WILL be cussing required Film at 2300 hrs Stay tuned..

August 19, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Was getting too distracted by a couple Trolls on two other sites.... Looks nice, don't it? BUT, If the end of the panel is NOT square...... Seeing a gap? tried to correct that..too End of the day, a dry fit...front AND back skirt boards are 1/2" too short...even after squaring the panel up, and adjusting the tongues a bit...Gave up for a while...then, deciding I wasn't going to get beat by two boards...I went and made 2 new skirt boards from scratch....Dry fit was a LOT closer, this time...got even better when the clamps and the last of the glue were applied to the problem... Will trim the "wild" ends later...letting this sit over night.... Ran this around the top edge of the case...just the front and the two sides...wanted the back flush with the lid.. Adds a transition between the lid and case.. As for the lid...top has been sanded, planed and scrapered.. Started on filling any gaps.. Scrapered? Screeched a bit in protest... Lid hardware....because.. Getting about time to install it? So..why is that top drawer sticking out? Notice those 2 clamps? Clamping in a Rosewood plug..will trim flush next time in the shop... Beltsander in on it's second 80 grit belt...palm sander is running 100 grit...Bad when you have to dump out the dust bags BEFORE you can use the sander.. Router bit was almost too big for the router's base...it was scraping it just a hair bigger. Old bit I had to remove first...was stuck to the collett's jaws...had to clamp the motor in the bench vise to remove the old bit...which promptly went to the trash can... 0800 Thursday Morning...have a TEE scan being done...and they will knock me out to do it...takes about 2 hours....and I will not be doing much of anything the rest of the day.. Stay tuned...
