July 29, 20214 yr Popular Post Hauled a few planks to the shop...wanted enough to make 2 panels.....Not the best looking boards....but at ~$0.80 per Bft...oh well....Wanted 6 planks ~ 24" long... Cut out some of the worst spots.. Not too much I can do with these...maybe burn them? Edges were a bit wavy....so, set up the tablesaw's rip fence.. Idea being slide the best edge along the fence, and just skim off the wavy stuff...mark THAT freshly sawn edge.. With an "X"....reset the fence a 1/4"....slide the edge with the X along the fence... And now I have a second straight edge, parallel to the first edge....But....3 boards made a wide panel..too wide...2 of the planks had some bad areas...reset the fence.. And we have a filler strip. 2 wide planks were at 10-1/4" for the width...had some gaps to clean up, too...so (hand tool time!) Clamp a board to the bench, and get out the Cordless No.6 Jointer... Stanley No. 6 Small Jointer Plane. Then check for gaps... Repeat for the other wide board.... No gaps...Clear of the tablesaw, we have more work for it to do.... Set out 2 pipe clamps...moosh some glue around....add the upper/middle clamp..still no gaps....added cauls at both ends, to keep things flat...then back to the bench.. need to prep these for a glue up...once Panel No1 is done. Again, No. 6 Jointer at work.. No gaps? And.... Not too bad? Again..it is just sitting there, no glue, no clamps nor braces (don't sneeze!) haven't decided on how wide, how tall, what size drawers, or how many.....and what kind of lid...got all of August to figure it out.. Single Brain Cell Sketch Up.....stay tuned
July 30, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Panel #2 is also in the clamps, BTW..( got bored ) Not sure which end will be "Up" yet....or, what the final length will be.....right now, they are both 3/4" x 13" x 23-1/2"".....subject to change... Depends on what the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up comes up with....have a pile of goodies to stash inside it, once it gets done... 3 boxes worth...? Stay tuned..
August 1, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Clamps came off..panels need a little trimming done... Maybe? Not feeling up to using a hand saw for this, unsafe to use the tablesaw...AND get a square, straight edge...so, needed a Vintage saw, anyway.. How Vintage? 6" trim saw. Needs a fence to guide it along, though... Ok, I mark where I want the saw to cut...square that line across. Then measure out from the saw blade to the edge of the saw's foot plate, that will run against the fence...square that line across, and clamp the fence to that second line. As long as I keep pressure against the fence while making the cut.. No matter how wide or narrow the waste, I can still get a decent, straight, and square cut...repeat for the other end.. Then lay the "finished" panel on top of the non-trimmed panel.. Mark the 2 cut lines I need. Since it would be nice IF these two will match each other....and complete the last 2 cuts...still need a couple clamps, though.. Glue line flattening (which had shredded a belt on my sander)...then finish all faces with a smoother plane.. At least to make things easier to do layouts. And, figure out which will be the "inside" of the case. The rip fence? It had more work to do....after 3 planks were cross cut down a bit...set the fence to 1-1/2" width.. Although some needed a second cut... Needed a straight edge for the next cuts....as 7/8" was a tad too thick...went with 9/16" thick, for now.. Drawer dividers, and drawer runners. Dovetail to fit in a sliding dovetail socket (later) But, not every one was thinned down...at least not THAT thin... Web Frame for the bottom of the chest....will go from 7/8" down to ~ 3/4" bare......these also get a groove to house a bottom panel. At the top of the case, instead of a drawer, there will be a compartment..3" deep...so.. Which will get a rebate to house the 1/4" plywood bottom...and another to house the top edge of the plywood back... I also tried a bit of layout, to see how many drawers there will be.. Looks like there will be 5 drawers...might be enough? After Brunch has settled to the "bottom", I go open the shop....might be a busy day? Stay tuned..
August 2, 20214 yr Popular Post Looks good but using power tools? I have had good results with card scrapers for glue line clean up. Also Stanley #80 cabinet plane works.
August 2, 20214 yr Popular Post 1 hour ago, Gerald said: Looks good but using power tools? I need a prescription filled for medication to bring me back from that shocker!!
August 2, 20214 yr Author Popular Post It will get worse, in a little bit....Tried to thin the too thick parts....tablesaw wasn't having anything to do with that....so...leaving the bottom webframe a bit thick.. Edges have been planed, though. Set about milling sliding dovetail sockets... And try to transfer these lines to the other panel....red circle? That be the dovetail bit I started out with...once things were set up... Did a couple checks, to make sure the bit was where it needed to be...then ran the router.. So far, so good....reset for socket #2...and try again.. SNAP! Half hour round trip to Lowes, buy a new bit...back at it, again... Before I could do #3 and #4, had to rotate the panel... And work my way outwards....double check to make sure the other panel did match up...all but #3...tried to correct that...almost did it.. 2nd from the right....rest are right on the money....Next...a few cuts along the bottom edges of the panels... These to remove the bulk of the waste...then.. Skewed rebate plane No. 181......double checking for fit...also needed something like this down the back edge of the panels... This is for the 1/4" plywood back....sample piece to set things up.. Both to hide the sockets' ends, and to keep the case square. Glue and screws to install the full sized panel... Webframe for the bottom of the chest? Stiles needed notched...will get a counter bored and plugged screw to hold the corners together. Those slats? they be the waste from when I thinned the dividers down from 7/8" thick to 9/16"....these were then cut for length..to match a set of grooves..needed to run the grooves centered in all the parts.. Fun part ( more cussing ) was trying to assemble the dang thing...Cussing? Think Day #1 Boot Camp Reception Center.... Needed cauls to keep the corners flat....glue and screws....let this sit a day..... Need to dig out my ROUTER TABLE and get it set up....Drawer runners need to slide into the sockets, and then dividers slide in to lock them in place...glue on the dividers, only.....first, I need to form a dovetail on each part....maybe about Wednesday, before any more assembly work gets done? Brand new Clothes Dryer is being delivered Monday, old one hauled away ( $35 for them to do that?).....So, I'll need something to do while waiting on them to show up.... Stay tuned..
August 2, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Cleaned up the bottom webframe... This will be the bottom of the Tool Chest....then worked on getting the old dryer ready to leave....and moved the tablesaw out of the way...just enough to bring this "beast" out of hiding... Cleaned it off, installed the fence to about where it needs to be.....router is an all-metal B&D....about the same as my DeWalt 610...other than paint colours and size of the chuck...which still takes 2 wrenches, to change a cutter Same adjuster for height..as the no. 610 DeWalt Goal is to make a dovetail joint that slides.. Drawer runners (8) get this treatment....2 trips along the fence, then a dry fit.. To see how they fit...adjust the fence a bit, for a better fit...Time to go vertical... Slider and a c clamp...then a push stick... Other hand is working the camera, otherwise, it would be helping out, as well.. Been a long time since I have used this router table...router is still running great. Still waiting on the delivery guys to show up.....May wait until tomorrow for a glue up? Stay tuned...
August 3, 20214 yr Popular Post 2 days into August and the August project is 55% done.... Just saying.....
August 4, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Day 3.....Sockets (4) have been milled 2 and.. 2 more....took 4 set-ups....one for each. The tails that will fit these? Same system I used for the drawer runners....except..I forgot these are a tad thicker...as in 3/4" instead of 9/16"....that first pin was a bit on the thin side...corrected for the other 3 ends... That should do it for the router, today...back to the hand planes.....floor of the top compartment, needs rebates and dados to support it... Rebates first.. Ward's Master Quality (Stanley) No. 78....need enough room for glue and screws, and go down 1/4" for the thickness of the floorboard (plywood).. Getting there....got both rebates done...and fitted...dado is next, needed two...settled for one.. Had to set up the plane, first..Stanley No. 45, type 4...with both spurs pointing down.. hardest part, besides the DULL spurs, was keeping the plane vertical....wanted to lean a bit....floor is getting covered, too.. This was just from the #78...anyway.. Yep, dull spurs...haven't decided IF 1/4" is deep enough, yet....decided to try a full dry fit, of everything milled so far...and see just how much work needs to be done.. Need plywood for the floor, need plywood for the back....then need plywood for the drawer bottoms....need to remove about an 1/8" off the front of the case...and a few burn marks ( skidmarks?) IF I get the plywood, I can try a glue-up of the case, later this week...Have dados to finish up....yep...Ve haft werk to do.. Stay tuned...
August 4, 20214 yr Popular Post Steve, that is an interesting corner joint on the stiles and rails. What is it called? How is it held together? I didn't see any dowels but did you use biscuits? Is it mortised and tenoned? Thanks. Gunny, I think he may be further along than 55 %. Scary.
August 4, 20214 yr Author Popular Post These joints? glue...and a single counter-bored screw. goes through the thinner part of the corner, and into the end grain. About like building door... You can barely see one of the counter-bores right beside that gray clamp on the end...top left corner
August 6, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Guess I had better up-date this thread a bit.... Router table has been put away, for now. Tablesaw back out to where I can work with it. Compartment floor has been cut to size....so has the back panel. Reset the fence...peeled a saw blade's width off the front edge of the case's side panels... Laundry Detail today.... 3 holes were drilled at the bottom of both side panels....then a fancy drill was used... Millers Falls No. 1950. circle shows the countersink bit.... Glue and screws to attach the sides to the bottom Clamps glue and screws to install the back of the case, including the top.. After I had removed the burn marks...then flip this over...and install drawer runners, drawer dividers, compartment parts.... And from the other side.. Enough clamps? How about I stand this heavy thing up...? Let this sit a day, or two...while I work on drawers....all five of them... Might even have some work for this to do... Stay tuned..
August 8, 20214 yr Author Popular Post get caught up here...Clamps came off the other day.. Glue joints were cleaned up...and even a start on the drawers.. Yes, it is sitting on the new Dryer...but, there is a clean sheet of plywood between them...Managed 3 drawer fronts with what I had hauled to the shop, that day One hour shop time this morning....more tablesaw work.. one plank managed to produce enough for 4 drawer sides...once I checked for length.. Removed the rough edges...and a tapered one at that... Then milled for width..first drawer's two sides.. Was on a roll...kept going... 7 out of 10 sides..not too bad...wanted to get the last 2 drawer fronts.. Nice grain patterns....was to the point of either going upstairs to get the last plank, or work on 2 drawer backs..as I had some thinner stuff sitting around..and didn't want real thick backs. So.. Final width will be when the drawers are assembled...have to allow for the plywood bottom. Picked a $2 box of hardware yesterday.. Yard Sale, the owners had re-done all the cabinets in the house...the box needs two hands to carry it. has a nice selection of parts ( and the bolts for them) Not sure IF the screws are in the bag......I don't know.... Do you think 2 of these per drawer would be a bit much? One hour's work, this morning...may try again this afternoonish...with Laundry Detail... Stay tuned
August 9, 20214 yr Author Popular Post 1525 hrs to 1830hrs...was a busy afternoon...including laundry detail...did NOT get off to a great start, though.. Not the way I normally do these things...wasn't much better on the next one.. turned out, the router setting was a bit too shallow... Getting better at each try...usual luck. need grooves for the bottom to sit in.. Front got it's groove thing going... Via a Stanley No. 45..with a 1/4" wide cutter...same with the sides.. Making some curlie Qs They come up, and try to wrap around me left thumb...intend to leave this plane set up for this work...so.. So, I just set up the other 45 in the shop...for the next task.....but, since the spurs are still DULL.. I used a saw instead... To plough a dado for the back of the drawer..hole was to help hold the side while I milled the groove..I can run a screw through that and into the end of the drawer's back...speaking of which..backs needed to be thinned down a hair, and flat.. Yeah....reset the tablesaw, instead..buzz that "extra" width off. ripped for width, to allow for the bottom panel to pas under.. then a dry fit for length.. Nibbled on one end until a perfect fit occurred...THEN cut a plywood bottom panel to size... Checking for square...may do a glue up sometime....Dryer is done.. Looks like it just might have been a busy day? Stay tuned
August 9, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Went and added some glue, and a few more clamps ( can never have enough, right?) and that glue-up was it for shoptime this morning.. Then a Lumber Run was made...4 planks bought....two at 3/4" x 6" x 48", and the other 2 are 3/4" x 6" x 75" Hope that will be enough to finish up this project. price? all 4 boards...was a total of $7...
August 10, 20214 yr Popular Post If you want this project to last most of the month, you might try coasting a bit. It's only the 9th and this thing is about 80% complete. Can you find a few more details to work out? Something extra to stretch out the time.
August 10, 20214 yr Author Popular Post I think I MIGHT have Hired Old Man Murphy as a Shop Assistant....yeah...Monday was one of them days....was getting bored just sitting around, anyway... So...went to the shop LATE last night...was AFTER rehabbing a $10 plane.. From this... to this.... Took the drawer out of the clamps, and got it fitted to it's new home.. And...it even closes up nicely... Which left Drawer #1 to get into the clamps...despite Murphy's "help" Grooves to do,,this is the front..sides weren't much better... At least I could drill a hole where the dado will be...to help hold the part still...Dado? And..since I have yet to sharpen the spurs on the dado plane... Needed a saw instead.. Disston D8 Panel saw...pre-1928 style, 11 ppi....then cut the plywood bottom....and trim the back for length....then the real fight began.. Herding cats is easy, compared to this ( just walk with a full food dish..) however much Murphy tried to "help" outThis drawer WAS getting glued up and clamped up....needed a few extra ones, too.....and gave a couple of them an extra turn of the handle, just for spite. Let that sit a while...has a slight toe-in in the back..fine with me I tried to start drawer #3... Front kept trying to flip over, onto the floor Decided the rest of the groove and dado work can wait until Tuesday Need to do the dovetails, too...might be a full day in the shop, for one drawer? Need to FIRE Murphy, too. Haul a plank to the shop after a bit...will see how today starts out....or, just take a nap Stay tuned..
