February 15, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Spent some time in the shop today....Got the 2 panels out of their clamps...and trimmed for length and width...First off...swept up the shop's floor, and dumped it into a 30gal. trash can.... That WAS empty when it came down the steps to the shop...and even more stuff was tossed in, as the afternoon wore on... Plane was getting a work out, today....Panel #1 wasn't too bad.. Panel #2 was having....issues Between the tear-out, and.. And knots...had to run the plane at an angle.. Got both panels cleaned up, and sized..I hope....time to raise a panel.... Tablesaw gets tilted to 15 degrees.. Fence is 1/2" away from the bottom of the blade, where it comes up out of the top of the saw...set up the fence slider... Non-slip spacer...panels are too long to from with the slider...but the end grain.. Works just fine. Panel is long enough to bridge that gap when the long grain edges are run through...key is, do not stop.. You'll get burn marks every time....next...next a rebate on the back side.. Reset the saw and fence....had to return the blade to 90 degrees....lower the blade to 1/4" high...fence was moved in a bit All edges were run through, first with the panel on the flat.. Then stand the panel up, and run it through, again... Then checked for fit...Cross grain, needed the #78 to make the fit better... Better now? Long grain took a different plane... Was a bit too fat through there. Router plane thinned it down.. And a look out front.. Both on the ends, and.. The long grain sides...even the corner angles were lining up... Didn't feel up to trying a glue up...was getting a might sore...busy afternoon. may try tomorrow,,or Tuesday...we'll see. Door building 101? Stay tuned..
February 15, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Should have known better....not to go to the shop...on a Monday Went there to cut a bunch of clamp pads....2 per corner, to keep the corners flat. Chopped a big stack of Cedar scraps. Then pre-set a bunch of clamps...to save time and fumbling around ( i still fumble...) One thing led to another...corners were worked on.. C clamps and 2 pads...to keep things leveled...F clamps to pull things tight...Even had that Sabre Clamp.. Hmmm...9 clamps? That too many? Afraid to try and move this thing....will have to let Door #2 wait a day... Until the tablesaw is cleared off, again. defects are already showing up.. That I'll have to fix...Why do they always show up AFTER assembly is done? Stay tuned..
February 16, 20215 yr Popular Post Amazing work with hand planes Steve. Wow. Kudos to all you hand tool guys ! Paul

February 16, 20215 yr Author Popular Post A supply of cauls.. And a pile of clamps. . Door#1 is out of the clamps, getting checked for square.. Hmm, could be better? Check the other direction.. Almost...will try to do better with Door #2.. Need a 3rd hand, to start.. While I glue a rail in place...and check for square, too.. Close? Repeat for corner #2....including the square checks...move over to the tablesaw.. Making sure the panel goes in facing the correct way....hard to get them back out. A little breakout from doing the rebates, will close right up in a bit.. Glue clamp and cauls for the other stile... Ya think 10 clamps is too many? Door #1 was also sanded smooth.. Any defect were filled up, and sanded down...one question.. Knob too small? Or, is it too big? Stay tuned

February 18, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Door #2 is out of the clamps.. And, even the inside looked better.. Was able to lay both doors on the case.. Couldn't figure out what was out of square...until I checked the case itself....about 1/4" out..Grrrrr Anyway, until I get a plywood panel for the back, to pull things square...I guess I could install a couple hinges in Door #1 Knife to mark it out, mallet and chisel to chop it out....router to level the mortise.. Had 2 drills set up...was quicker that way... VIX bit for the pilot holes, Phillips bit to drive the waxed screws....repeat on the side of the case...( was FUN trying to mark them out) Built in door stop...Waiting on squaring the case, before Door #2 is installed... This will do, for now.... Stay tuned...
February 19, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Plywood has been bought, today....along with a few other items....plywood was trimmed to size...with 2 factory edges that at least were square. One towards the top, the other along one side....screws and a bead of glue... That center line of screws came later...first,,,a BIG pipe clamp.. And PULL! Clamp was pulling until the plywood edge about touched the top of the case....bead of glue, and more screws... Flip this mess over.. Then set about adding a towel bar at the bottom.. 5/8" forstner bit...does NOT match a 5/8" dowel rod...BTW...Marked the rod for length.. Cut it on the mitersaw. Installed with a bit of glue and a screw.. Time to add hinges to Door #2.....about the same routine as with #1...mark things out, chisel and mallet to rough out the hinge mortise... Router to clean and level...somewhere in all of this...one stile had come loose....and NOT the one I was chopping on...had the hinges done, and a repair.. Figured that was just enough, for one day... And see how the doors fit, now... Maybe tomorrow, I can sand things smooth, see about 2 knobs..and maybe find a latch that will work.... Until then...stay tuned..

February 19, 20215 yr Popular Post That design for the doors looks fantastic. Nice simple and well stated.

If Texas is any indicator things are cooling off down there! 9 hours ago, steven newman said: And PULL! Steven, how did the long clamp in this orientation pull the cabinet into square? I've always run the clamp diagonally on the long side of the "X". Not always with the best results. So how does this work?
February 19, 20215 yr Author Popular Post I'm pulling on the plywood. Pulling it until that 1/4" wide gap at the top closes up. Easier to do, than a diagonal clamp, easier to get the clamp to stay put. Plywood is glued and screwed to one side of the case...where if I slide the factory corner to the top the side of the case stays in line with the plywood edge. The plywood on the other edge hung below the bottom shelf by a good 1/4"......it creaked and groaned a bit....was able to pull until the gap at the top closed up...then a few screws and some glue...and the case will stay square....I added screws to the middle shelf and the bottom shelf... Normally, during a glue-up, I will use a diagonal clamp, to pull things square, until the glue sets up......some things are a bit too awkward to add the diagonal clamp, where it will actually stay put, and do it's job.....The curves at the bottom of the case, made it too hard to do a diagonal clamp. No place to grab onto...and, during the glue-up.. Yep....no place to set a diagonal....I did check with a square.....square seemed to have been too small... Going with the two small wooden knobs, and the magnetic catches....and see how that keeps the doors closed... Stay tuned..
February 20, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Roh-kay....clamps came off the doors...just long enough to drill two holes...and press two knobs into place... Then, back on they went...they also pressed the knobs all the way down...later today, the clamps came back off, glue had set enough... Knobs done....was a question about a latch.. These won't work, either they don't fit, or they just don't look right for these doors...we have ways Might say I am attracted to these? One per door.. Simple enough to do...lay out where the magnetic part will go.. Scratch Awl to start the holes... 2 screws to attach...place the plate on the magnet, lower the door.. To set where the plate will go on the door. Pilot hole was needed to add the screw to install the plate....repeat for the other door.. Three tasks today, first was the Knob install, second was the catch installs...these 2 brackets are the third task....One goes under the bottom shelf.. Pilot holes needed...otherwise no problems. 2 screw will go through the bracket and into the wall stud... The second bracket? It goes underneath the top of the case....and there is a problem.. Won't fit in there..drills are way too long....we have ways Fit this thing with a #3 Phillips....WW2 Vintage Angle Head Drill... Unable to do any pilot holes first....but drive the screw in and back out a few times, with lots of wax...and.. Red holes are where the screws into the wall go through....metal bracket will prevent the screw heads from just pulling on through the plywood back panel.. I think that will just about do for one day. Tomorrow, I will spend most of the day, sanding this thing down to 220 grit....and MAYBE mix up a batch of stain... Stay tuned..
February 20, 20215 yr Thanks for that explanation up above Steven. I may have to try that out next week
February 21, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Sanded using both some 100 grit and then the 220 grit.....Then mixed a batch of stain up....and brush on a decent coat... Inside ( trying NOT to miss anything) and the outside... Not sure what the story is with the top of the case... Sap wood, maybe? Letting this dry a day, or..until it stops stinking up the shop....then see about a coat of clear gloss poly.... Stay tuned
February 22, 20215 yr Author Popular Post 2 coats of clear gloss poly, rubbed down each time with 0000 steel wool...Then haul upstairs, and install... Sucker is heavier than it looks....holding this up onto the wall with one hand, while running 4 screws in with the other.. 2 and the top came after the 2 on the bottom were in....then just close the doors.. Time for a Guinness?
