February 6, 20215 yr Popular Post Have a stash of Ash 1 x 6 planks...sitting around, getting warmed up.....ice is about gone... 9 boards = $18......have a big empty spot... have to leave access to that light switch, but..... Corner is a bit messy... Hmmmm....maybe a shelf, then a door or two above the shelf? Maybe a shelf up on top? may use these for door panels.. Or just fancy cabinet sides? Had to do a bit of measuring...and also locate the wall studs...and NOT the pipe for the shower on the other side of the wall. Will let the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up take a look at this space...... stay tuned...(not too sure about that green colour....)
February 6, 20215 yr Popular Post You are really getting good at that One Cell Sketchup! Can't wait to see how this one goes!
February 6, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Patience, Grasshopper..... Sketch Up already has a "working drawing" set up....waiting on Moose & Squirrel Delivery Service to deliver a set of plans... and a detail for the 4" long bottom edge, in case a dowel needs to be used... Stay tuned...I have Laundry Detail, later today.....
February 7, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Well...A few boards went to the shop....most were cut down a bit... Edges were straight-line ripped down to 5-3/8" wide. two for the long sides, and 2 for shelves.. Curves were bandsawn....and dados laid out.. tablesaw did a bit of work.. Then a chisel.. Then a router.... To smooth things out....repeat for the other side... And a dry fit.. I also got a start on a couple panels for 2 doors... 3 out of 4....will do a glue up later....2 per door panel. Need to haul the rest of the lumber to the shop....need a top shelf, maybe another mid shelf, and the parts for the doors. Stay tuned...

February 7, 20215 yr Author Popular Post 2 hours of shoptime? or, until my back starts to hurt, again.... Re-figured a couple measurements....Cabinet width is down to 24" ...from 28"....makes for a lighter cabinet, and slimmer doors. Needed a mid shelf, so.. Trimmed the 2 regular shelves to the new length.....and that 1/2" thick plank (Pine) is the mid shelf....needed trimmed for length, and for width....which means I need another dado made.. . And cleaned up. Only needed to be 1/2" wide, by 1/2" deep... Then after both sides have all their dados done....needed to cut the top of the cabinet...mainly for length....also straight-line ripped, as it was tapered in width.... 4/4 dados, 1" in from the ends, 3/8" deep.....circles were for the ends to be rounded....went to the other edge, instead... Seemed to have a problem... Time to change the DULL blade? maybe. Beltsander to clean this up...top of this plank needed a bit of smooth work... Since the WR #62 and this Ash do NOT play nice together....Sargent No. 414c took over. Back is hurting....right between the shoulder blades...decided to stack things up.. And call it a day. 3 shelfs done, 2 sides done, and the top of the cabinet done....almost a Flat-Pak? Stay tuned...Need to buy a 1/4" x 24" x 24" plywood panel...to use as a back...then maybe a glue up?
February 11, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Ok...been a rough week...must have been...I even worked in the shop on a Monday Started out as just a dry fit...to see how things will fit together... Trying to figure out HOW to set this mess, so I could glue and clamp it up....table was quite deep enough.. Nothing for the top to sit on....went back upstairs, grabbed the bottle of glue...and set about gluing this mess together... Shelves first....bottom 2 were easy...it was trying to clamp that skinny one in place... Had one clamp tried to do the Sabre Dance....then came that top...trying to get long enough clamps, that could also reach around the clamps already there.. I did find 2 I could use...another pair were a bit...different... Used the shelves with a few shorter clamps.....then had to add others to pull shelves back into straight.. Had to pull the tablesaw way out, so I could get around to this side.....then try to slide the tablesaw back into place, without tipping over thew glue-up mess..clothes in the dryer, I needed the room to get by with the hamper...have let this dry about long enough....may try to remove that forest of clamps...today Since I need the tablesaw to do a bit of...saw work.....be nice not to have this mess sitting in the way. Frames and panels for 2 doors need to be worked on.... Stay tuned..

February 11, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Ok...figured it was safe to take all of these off.. Didn't rush things, either...just remove one clamp, hang it up, and come back for the next clamp..took a while, but.. Had one problem area... Front was fine...it was the back of the 1/2" shelf that was sticking out...got down a pair of clamps.. One on each end like this...to hold things down on the saw.. While this plane took it's sweet old time. them see-through shavings may look nice, but it takes forever to get anything done...and them shavings love to stick to about anything, especially my left hand. Finally got this planed down flush...time to set the case aside for now.. Yes, the case IS square...those gray legs back there are splayed, for a more stable bench...about 5 degrees for both legs.. tablesaw cleared off? Time to set up the rip fence....have a bunch of door frame parts to rip.. Fence is set 1-1/2" from the blade...may have the parts a bit too thick, though.. 7/8" just might be a tab too much....picked out the 4 best ones.. These will be stiles..the 2 under them will be 4 rails....letting these "rest" a bit...until I decide how thick they need to be... Which leaves the panels for the doors...thought that one long plank would have been just long enough for 4 blanks... 4th one came up 4" too short..had to walk back upstairs, and pick up the best looking of the 3 leftovers... Just to get the 4th one.....had to cut around the worst sections....still managed to get a knot in there, some where... Two from the long plank...not too hard to joint the edges for a glue up....it is the other 2... That might present a problem....we'll see.....letting things ( and ME) rest up overnight....then see how things turn out... Stay tuned..
February 11, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Got bored ( always trouble, when that happens..) so headed to the shop for a little bit... Those panels? ripped and hand planed the edges, until there was a decent enough glue joint.. Tablesaw was more to straighten out a tapered edge, or 3...the rest ? Well...it was a busy day. Decided to thin the frame parts to 3/4" thick....then let them sit until tomorrow... Methinks that will do, for today. Will sort out the best of that group, and start on building the 2 door frames... Stay tuned..

February 12, 20215 yr Author Lets see....before or..wait until after Lunch to start in...again. Need to set up that Stanley #45....twice today....grooves, then beads....may have to plane a few spots smooth...film @ 2300 hrs...
February 13, 20215 yr Author Popular Post This MIGHT be a LONG one...hope nobody minds Went before Lunch, this time....came back up after about 2-1/2 hrs....and very sore between the shoulder blades...made a big old mess of chips... Actually..I even made a second pile like this, after the first was swept up...got tired of walking on the dang things Lets see...sorted through the stack of 3/4" x 1-1/2 slats... Couple nice long ones...to make 4 rails with...and 4 stiles that needed trimmed for length. ganged them up..buzzed the ends...needed to joint a few edges, too.. Some were tapered, some a bit too fat, some had a slight curve...set the rail blanks aside...set up the Stanley #45, Type 20.. have a bunch of grooves to plough. Made sure the groove was centered. Also needed a jig made up.. Pre-drill a few holes...needed a notch or two cut... To hold the long stiles upright.. Set up a combo square, to check the depth of cut.. Just under 3/8" deep...by 1/4" wide...the 4 stiles were done..needed to work on the 4 rails.. Cut those 2 long slats into more or less equal parts...over on the cordless mitersaw...full strokes, doesn't take very long.. Reset the jig, as the rails are a bit shorter.. And soon had 8 grooves done.. The raised panels will set into these grooves....need beads to go with groovy things... This is the #22 Bead Cutter...and quite dull....had to stop and sharpen it up....bevel and back. set up the plane a tad differently.. Sliding skate moved out a bit...fence moved in to just touch the skate.... Reset the fence....first a test run...to make sure I have things set up right.. looks good to me...reset the jig..and try it out.. The screw is to tighten the grip of the jig....fun part is next... because each of the stiles and rails get 2 beads...corner joints are to be mitered 1/2 lap joints....beads will meet at each corner, and be mitered. need to get the frames dry fitted together....so I can size the 2 raised panels to fit.... beads aren't too bad...going WITH the grain...the other cut is going against the grain, and needs a LIGHT cut....cleaned up with a block plane, and some 220 grit sandpaper down in the quirk. need to reset the mitersaw...with depth stops...to do the half laps... Anyone want to show up and help out? Stay tuned..

February 13, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Sheesh...just can't seem to get good help, now a days Rails all have their beads done... Stiles were next..until... had one that needed a little extra work, though.. Had a big old curve needed flattened out..beads done..get out the miter tools... half lap mitered corners....involved a little of these saws.. And a little of this saw... And...some needed a chisel to be cleaned up... 4 rails got a corner like this..the stiles? First they got this...then a miter cut...so I could test fit a corner,, A little fine tuning... And all the parts for 2 frames are done...even a dry fit.. Something like this? Which leaves working on two panels.. To make a couple Raised panels. Then the 2 doors will be done..I hope Laundry Detail today....I got done (back) way before the clothes did.....still..about 2 hours of puttering around in the shop stay tuned..
