Beautiful wood, looking forward to seeing this as it progresses.  Sure has given me some ideas about gluing up a blank and trying something like this myself.

Gunny, that is exactly the reason I made this thread to encourage others to do this.  Not complicated, but sometimes aggravating.  But, it works out.  Al has done many of these boxes and so much better than I ever can.  You can start your glue up as this thing is about to wind down.  I hope to see your project soon.

Working on a lazy susan for the dining room table currently.  Still in glue up, oh look that would be cool, glue that too mode.

Nice tutorial Steve. Working with that small BS really makes the job more challenging, but you always find a way to overcome those issues. Most of the BS work is done but still a way's to go. Waiting for the rest of the story.

Thanks, Al.  Finally getting back to this project.  Been doing so many other things but for the moment, caught up.  Turned 3 pens this morning and got a few hours on this project.  The last time I posted, I showed the back cut off and the drawers cut out.  Before putting the back panel back onto the box, there were 2 little cut outs to be made.  Now, it looks like a hog lying in the mud.    But, here are a couple of pictures to show how it looks.  I had to trace these cut outs from the pattern which you have seen.  So, I won't bore you with that.  

 

 

I'll turn the back panel so you can see it better.  

 

 

 

And, now, you see the pig.  Next step is to remove the front and back of the drawers, so here we go.

Just a couple more photos from today.  The drawers will be hollowed while the front and back remove.  Yes, I saw the light bulbs turn on.  

 

 

Just tracing of another part of the pattern.  This is not hard, just many steps.  Just think we get to glue all this back together.  

 

 

 

Yes, I buggered this one drawer.  This Olson blade does not turn are quickly as the 1/8" or one with more teeth.  It is an aggressive blade which I like, but I prefer a little more ability to turn without binding the blade. 

 

 

 

 

 

OK, a few dabs of Titebond III glue, some sanding and will line with blue felt at the request of our daughter..  I really need to work on that patch.  Will sand while the fronts and back are not installed.  Going to sand the mother box.  

 

 

A word of caution here:  You only want to sand down the inside enough to make it relatively smooth.  If you sand too much, the drawer will have a large space at the top.  It naturally will have plenty of space at the top.  In the final sanding, the edges of the box and drawers will be rounded to reduce the image of all the space at the top of the drawer.  

 

These little round sanding drums are available almost anywhere.  I purchased these from Shopsmith but I have another set that I purchase somewhere and they are Northern European.  It appears to be either Swiss or German.  I can't read it.  

 

That's it for today.  I hope I get a couple of steps tomorrow to keep up the interest.  I forgot the popcorn, but I have some frozen fruit if you like.  Have a good one and please stay safe and well.

Got a couple of hours today.  Wood is going back together minus the parts that make the drawer pockets.  

 

 

Out of clamps and it stayed together, but you can see where it needs sanding.  

 

 

 

For the inexperienced, the gap you see on the right side will be sanded, the dust collected and mixed with glue and inserted into the gap.  This will take a l....o....n....g time to sand but won't bore you with that.  

 

On to the drawers being assembled.  I am not going to take the time to sand inside this pockets.  She requested blue felt so will sand the exterior and then glue in the felt.  One more band saw cut to make and it can rest.

Another view.  However, late today as I was sanding both of these failed.  So, tomorrow, I have to cut 2 more.  I will ensure that there is no pith.  That is where they failed.  The next pictures you will see are after the pulls are installed and the whole box is sanded and ready for latex poly.

In building three walnut bedside tables, there's going to be tons of cut offs. I foresee a bunch of bandsaw boxes. While Ventura's boxes are very nice, I think I'll try designing some on my own. Some variation of this one, Maybe.

That is a cute box, Gene.  That split at the top just bothers me.  It looks like wood failure or a lightening strike.  Yes, Keener boxes are a challenge, but our daughter picked it out about 8 years ago.  It was time to make this one for her.  Got the pulls shaped and need to sand to find the drawer fronts.  Need to go to the fabric store and get some blue felt per customer request.  Will be back in a couple of days.  Thank you everyone for following along.  I am hoping that you are learning if you didn't already know how these boxes are cut and assembled.  Fun but labor intensive.  

My stack of cut offs is growing daily. By the time these weird table legs are cut out, the stacks will be immense. 

For some time now, (years) I've been contemplating alphabet letter shaped boxes. This might be the time. Before I start on them, I'm going to invest in Olsen stock, though.

I like the broken box Gene. Never made one myself because, though I've shown photos to family members and friends who I've made boxes for, no one has asked for this type of design. BTW, your boxes look absolutely beautiful. Again, lots of sanding for all 8 drawers.Do you sand the radii around the drawers or do you use a router.

I sand..and sand...and sand! The Rigid oscillating belt/spindle sander gets a workout, too. I modified the spindles to take 6" sleeves. Works out because the Shopsmith BS is limited to a 6" ...barely.. depth of cut.
