January 10, 20206 yr Popular Post We woodworkers have many interests alike. I am wondering, if many of us also have an old vehicle that we also tinker with. I have had a 30 model A ford and presently have a 98 F150, which I use every day. Does anyone else have an old car/truck/cycle hobby interest?
January 11, 20206 yr Popular Post Nothing with cars / trucks / automotive. I fix them all day don't want much to do with them after work. I do a great deal of research, study and on occasion exploration of ancient ruins.
January 11, 20206 yr Popular Post I have an '86 Dodge Ram pickup. I no longer tinker. It only breaks down on rainy or snowy or the coldest days and I don't have an out of the weather works space.
January 11, 20206 yr Popular Post Hopefully I'll be able to join you in another year Ron. Been budgeting for an old daily driver pick up. Looking for something in the 1940's or 50's, International, or a Ford. I'd even settle for a mid 60's F100, I learned to drive with my Dad's 1964 F100, I have a sentimental spot in my heart for that truck. Took my first date in that ol truck! But I do love the Internationals.
January 11, 20206 yr Popular Post Out of the car interest phase, we live in a townhouse, no garage, two of us, two parking spots. In years past owned 73 Firebird, 68 Mustang, 70 Mustang. Only other hobby I still practice is metal detecting, and almost only at the beaches, these days.

Watch what crap I put up with when they go to scanning. One time the nitwit cow sitting on a stool told me to remove the pins and plates. Yeah okay sure. Then she tells me I am a security risk etc etc. Thankfully a real Deputy Sheriff came over and ended that nightmare. Funny thing is I had a medical card, she was to lazy to get off that stool and go run the card. After that no more nice guy, refused to speak English. Made them get a Russian interpreter on the phone to explain everything.
January 11, 20206 yr Popular Post I seem to dabble in things. I'm more into residential building projects, and my woodworking is in its infancy. Not at all like the talent and beautiful things I've seen here. Thinking about getting a lathe. My 85 year old neighbor taught me stained glass last year, so that takes some of my time. I also have a 1968 MGB, hence the screen name, but not much mechanical talent either. A summer car, owned since 1973, just turned 40K miles. My 5 year old grandson is already making plans for it. He's probably the only kid in kindergarten who knows what an MG is. Jim

Had it maybe a month and health issues forced a sale. Got most of his money back, but I felt terrible for him. Jim
January 11, 20206 yr Popular Post In the past life and it's demands kept me form having a classic car. That is somewhat the case, but I do have a 62 corvette on my bucket list. As a young man (early 60s to late 70s) I did all my own mechanical work on cars, the new ones darn near require an EE degree; so about the only I do anymore is oil changes. I want to return to the simpler days.
January 11, 20206 yr Popular Post I have two in my garage right now. My '72 Plymouth Duster that I did a complete "resto-mod" in my shop, and a '67 Pontiac Firebird that now belongs to our son. The 'bird I bought when I was a kid and is all original. Our son & I restored it and I gave it to him. It will likely end up in Ohio some time this year. The Plymouth I bought and worked on after the 'bird project. Both of them are a lot of fun to drive. I took the Plymouth to Canada a couple years back, had an absolute blast. This pic was taken a few years back when James & I did a cruise in together one morning.
January 11, 20206 yr I restored a '59 and 1/2 Ford F 100 short bed. Three on the tree. Replaced the puny 223 with a less puny 300 with bores to accept Ford's 351 pistons. Never could figure out the true CID. Left the tranny alone but replaced the rear end with a higher ratio one. She'd only do about 80 mph but she was a stump puller! Painted her Dodge red and stuck on two step oak bed rails. Kept the original white wheels. Had plans to replace the bed with oak and chrome but, she got T boned before I could get that done. No injuries and, only got $1750 from the other driver's insurance. That was my first and last attempt at a resto.
January 11, 20206 yr Popular Post Had a 62 Valiant in college and worked on it a lot. It made it to my last semester and the trans dropped out at a red light while wife was on the way to work. Mostly just oil changes after school. Until I tried to change the fuel filter on a Dodge Caravan. Broke a bolt and had to put it in the shop with use ready to go on vacation, but that is another story. Changed the oil in my 03 F150 till I retired and decided the crawling around was not worth it. I am just not too good with metal.
January 11, 20206 yr Popular Post Go, Gunny. I had to return to the car with fingernail clippers and a very small pocket knife one day. They were going to confiscate it. I grabbed it back and they called security. I told them that I was taking all my stuff back to my car. While they were all bristled, I took my stuff and went out the entry door. I can make a choice in such matters. Now back to the thread.
January 11, 20206 yr Popular Post Enjoyed building model airplanes in my earlier years. Never did get into today's remote control models. I enjoy the daily criptoquote and sudoko puzzles in the local newspaper.Gotta keep the brain working. Edited January 11, 20206 yr by Al B
January 12, 20206 yr Popular Post Had a fleet in my day. Plowed show with the Jeep and this was in the garage being built from the ground up to replace it. This truck was on it's way to the junk yard when I acquired ownership. Now I only have a Jeep Wrangler and a couple ATVs.
January 12, 20206 yr Popular Post I play guitar (Hawai'ian slack-key finger-picking style), work cryptograms, and research topics in science and history. In between all that, I exercise hard. I'm gong down in flames!
January 12, 20206 yr Popular Post @Ron Altier, I remember when my parents had a 30 Model A Ford. I even had a wreck in that car. Did more damage to the other car than ours. The other driver tried to blame me, of course, but as luck would have it, there was a reserve cop behind me and he stopped and stood up for me. My parents sold it sometime in the 70s, after I was in the Air Force. I have a 68 AMC Javelin in my garage that I have intended to work on and at least get running for years, but everytime I have some money squirreled away to start on it, one of the kids needs something on an "emergency" basis. I realize I am the only one here that experiences that happening, right? Oh well, I'll get to it someday.
January 29, 20206 yr Popular Post No motorized vehicle tinkering, but I keep honeybees and like to play cards. That and my volunteer work (building theater sets and furniture for people coming out of homelessness, mission trips, and ushering at the theater and music hall) keep me busy. They've also drafted me to be the old man in one scene at an upcoming youth theater production. My premier theater role (other than fixing sets between acts).
