November 30, 20196 yr Popular Post I just joined the forum so I thought I would start with my latest turning project. This is a project to turn an existing liquor cabinet into something to bring it into line with our Art Deco theme for this house. It involves three separate turnings in a tulip style which will be mounted vertically on a 1 5/16” brass pole and progressively getting smaller in diameter, largest on the bottom. The “tulips” are all 15” high, and are 16”, 13” and 11” in diameter. I am making them from 8/4 African mahogany. The biggest challenge has been to arrange the grain pattern to end up looking like overlapping petals. On top of each tulip will be an alder platter attached and 2” larger diameter than the turning. So it is basically a vertical mounted lazy susan. The first and largest turning is now complete. Paul
November 30, 20196 yr That is awesome! Thanks for showing the glue-up that really helps me understand how you designed these!
November 30, 20196 yr Nice work. Look forward to seeing the finished project. What finish will you employ.
December 1, 20196 yr Author I’m waiting to hear what the wife wants. Glossy or satin. Right now it has the first coat on of highly diluted danish oil for penetration. I need fairly deep penetration on the lip because it is pretty thin. I’m expecting her to want high gloss so I will use a mixture of shelac, linseed oil and alcohol ( shine juice ).
December 1, 20196 yr Nice project . I try to avoid those enormous glue up but it looks like you handled it very well.
December 1, 20196 yr I was going to ask if you turned this on your Shopsmith, but then I saw the PowerPro headstock. Now, I am curious to the size of the biggest part of this tulip.
December 1, 20196 yr Author The diameter of the largest one which is the one pictured is right at 15” which is the max on the Shopsmith. There will be a platter on top of it that will be 19” made of alder. I will cut that out with the Shaper Origin. Paul
December 3, 20196 yr Author Today was mill and glue up number two. Hopefully get to turning it tomorrow. Paul
December 4, 20196 yr Author Today was roughing it out on the bandsaw and then getting it down to the balanced blank. I decided to weigh this one for grins and it was 45 lbs before starting. Paul
January 26, 20206 yr Author So I’m back from our camping trip and today it was move forward with the tulip turnings for the liquor cabinet. I completed the second turning and now will go at the third one.
February 3, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Well despite the Super Bowl interruption the third tulip turning got roughed out this weekend. Another hour or two of turning and that phase of the project will be completed. Paul
February 5, 20206 yr Author The third turning is done. The next part is building the platters that go on top of the turnings. That is what the decanters will actually sit on. I picked up the maple for the platters today and found another stick of Canarywood in the rack. I am slowly building a stash of it for a future project. Paul
February 7, 20206 yr Author Well the turnings have a coat of finish on them and got a start on the platters to go on top of them. All work came to a stop this morning due to birth of new grandson ! Paul
