January 5, 20206 yr Popular Post I use Titebond 3 for all of my woodworking. But on my ringmaster bowls, I always find a ridge where the glue is used, and it seems to be more perceptible after the bowl has aged some. Anyone have any better glues to use? By the way, I've never had a joint fail on any project where I used Titebond. Here is an interesting explanation for how adhesives actually word... https://www.explainthatstuff.com/adhesives.html#ancient

January 5, 20206 yr Hi Gene, yup I have used Titebond 2 but switched to 3 due to its being water resistant, figgering it was more durable. I have not tried hide glue, but I will certainly give it a test run. Thanks
January 6, 20206 yr Popular Post A funny story about "Hide Glue". My friend and I were at a restaurant discussing different glues. He had never heard of hide glue so I explained it some. The lady behind us gets up in a huff and comes over to tell us how she is offended because we just have to discuss glue in a public place. With a straight face my friend looks at me and says, "I had no idea whales could speak." Thought she would explode!!
January 6, 20206 yr Bwah-ha-ha-ha! Almost as good as saying you need to apologize for the last glass of water you drank.

Or a perfect situation for your recent post that went something like - "There's a tree somewhere making oxygen. Find it and apologize." Love a clever response. All mine seem to be on a 24 hour delay. January 28, 20206 yr HOLE-BE-GONE I finally got around to working on the ringmaster face-plate mount in order to "avoid a hole in the base", and after a little thought and experimentation, there is a solution. First, my adaptation is for the Ring Master for Lathes, in my case a Jet 1442. To make the bowl without the threaded spindle mount, I extended the distance from the lathe power-head by simply mounting a separator/extender (made from a blank cut from a 2"engineered beam used in new home construction obtained via "dumpster dive") on the face-plate. I mounted the bowl blank to the extended face-plate with double stick tape. I use 3M™ Double Coated Tape to mound the blank to the face-plate being careful to center the blank on the face-plate. See the picture below. This tape has never failed me on any application. I cut a small recess on the face-plate mount which I use as an access with a small pry tool like a screwdriver. Slow pressure will cause the tape to separate from the bowl base. To cut the rings, I simply reversed the angle of the cutter head as shown below. I used my PAG to set the angle just as I would set up normally. You'll notice that the image also shows the position of the cutter head to the face-plate. I started with a 12" blank and was able to cut 6 rings before running out of space. bye bye hole in the bottom of the bowl. Gluing the rings to make a bowl is not a problem since I use a homemade "bearing press" which I constructed from steel tubing acquired from more dumpster diving and assembled with bolts. Much better than the all-thread method.
January 28, 20206 yr I really wanted a ringmaster but I did not have the $$$ to play with. So I made one. The hardest part was finding something to use for the cutters. also using it the first few time finding the right angles. I really like the center hole because I put all the rings on my work bench and bolt it down through my bench using that hole for the glue up.

I have some time time for myself, SHHHHHHH don’t tell anyone! As a reward to myself, I bought me a Ringmaster. I read up on it, watched some videos, and maybe I’m giving myself too much credit, but there didn’t appear to be too much talent needed, that I couldn’t learn how to use it (understanding that some firewood may be produced in the beginning LOL). I have too many projects started and not finished (maybe I’m not the only one with this problem? LOL), so I’m gonna finish some stuff first. I’m thinking September for a first attempt. Some of the segmented turnings are awesome looking. So because we like pictures, here are some of it outta the box, and then assembled and on the Shopsmith.
March 21, 20224 yr I notice you have the Power Pro head. I purchased this about 2 years ago. Couldn't really justify it, but it sure is nice!
March 31, 20224 yr It is a neat idea. I have friends that do the same thing with a parting tool. I don’t think I would use one myself because you are limited to one shape for the bowl and it isn’t my favorite shape.

The cool part is doing a twist when you do the glueup.
