  1. Hi Gene, yup I have used Titebond 2 but switched to 3 due to its being water resistant, figgering it was more durable. I have not tried hide glue, but I will certainly give it a test run. Thanks
  2. I use Titebond 3 for all of my woodworking. But on my ringmaster bowls, I always find a ridge where the glue is used, and it seems to be more perceptible after the bowl has aged some. Anyone have any better glues to use? By the way, I've never had a joint fail on any project where I used Titebond. Here is an interesting explanation for how adhesives actually word... https://www.explainthatstuff.com/adhesives.html#ancient
  3. Thank you Gerald, I'll check 'em out.
  4. I use a Ringmaster on my Jet lathe. The attached picture shows the spindle and the relative distance to the Ringmaster. The length of the spindle is not objectionable. Perhaps a spindle adapter would not vibrate beyond what is reasonable. One the other hand, maybe not. The problem of gluing a temporary base is getting it attached securely/safely, and then getting it off without damage to the base (bottom of the bowl). I use leather or suede to cover the bottom of the bowls I make. But that hole plug at the bottom of the bowl!!! I plan to do some research into spindle extenders...after the holidays.
  5. FlGatorwood, That's a good question. I use my Ringmaster on a Jet lathe. As long as there is enough distance to access the bowl blank a faceplate would work. In order to get the distance between the lathe head and the Ringmaster, a spindle extender would be an answer to get the necessary distance required to align the blank in the Ringmaster "cutting zone." The "Hold Fast 3-1/2" Spindle Extender 1-1/4x8"--is available at a famous online retailer. A quick Google search yielded nothing about faceplate extensions. The Shopsmith with its extendable spindle would make the use of a faceplate feasible without an adaptation. As for stress, sharp tools and the hardness of the wood being used affect stress. I use cobalt cutters and find the stress/cutting resistance is of little concern. Experience is helpful in adapting rotation speed and cutting speed to manage cutting stress a.k.a. cutting resistance. I don't like the hole either! The spindle extender might be worth a try....at $50. Its just money--right?
  6. Well, "PAG" (precision angle guide) as a PDF, so here it is. PAG SETTINGS TABLE PDF.pdf
  7. Handy Dan makes reference to the "PAG" (precision angle guide). There is a chart circulating that has the settings for the pag based on a single thickness measurement. This is the first of 4 pages. I'd be happy to send the entire word doc via email, or if someone more tech savvy knows how to post it as a download, that would be great.
