Work Bench Types or Categories

Featured Replies

Good day folks, I am adding terminology for our wiki in the category of Workbenches.

If you have the time, could you help build our list in this topic? You can add your entries here in this topic.

I'd like to start with Workbench types.

Here are just a few to get us going.

  • Roubo
  • Danish
  • European

More entries are greatly appreciated!

And if you have any suggestions on whether a category or type is more appropriate?

Been using this one, at the moment.... yes, it helped to cut that 4 x 4 laying on the ground behind it...then fold it up, and carry back into the house, when done for the day..

  • I am not much for a type of workbench.  Mostly I see them as  Horizontal Chaos Storage Area.

I guess that could be a type of workbench.

Is there someplace that explains the difference between (at least) the 3 benches you listed?  Is "slab door on sawhorses" going to be a choice?

Most definitely. And yes, the different types of benches will be list under "Bench" as you can see at this link I have created the head listing https://thepatriotwoodwiki.org/Glossary-of-Woodworking-Hand-Tools#B

And there will be "See various types below" as I have created with other items. And links to descriptions of the benches as I did with Adze types at https://thepatriotwoodwiki.org/Glossary-of-Woodworking-Hand-Tools#A

Thanks Pete!

That'll work too as a type, what should we call it? Mechanical, portable, multi-purpose?

YES!

My work surface ("woodworking bench" is really stretching it) won't be posted till the grease and oil stains, paint and finish splatters and errant saw cuts are no longer an issue. In other words, it'll likely not make an appearance here.

Well, maybe with some judicious camera work, it might rival a Jackson Pollack piece....sorta.

Does half in the back of the truck and the other half still in the shop. With a quarter being eaten count? No

My main work bench is a holding area for my junkyard goodies until I find a home for them...

Yours looks like a good many here.  For me any horizontal surface is fair game for stuff.  Now the cleaning the mess up part, hey my kids can figure it out when I leave this world.  They will enjoy it.  NOT!
