Do you have a Lumber Liquidators in your area?  I have one on my "regular" stops.  In addition to some decent pallets, they also have an abundance of 3x3's that are normally tossed.  I have also scored some good small sheets of mdf (good for jigs & templates) and plywood (not good for much of anything).  The key is to get there before it rains cause the one near me just stacks this stuff up outside.  The nice thing about those 3x3's are that they are not nailed or screwed together - no work!

 

For my weekend I had to rebuild my scaffolding.   Took all the boards off the top and seats and turned them over.  Some may say that it looks like a picnic table, and it sure has been used as such.  But I use it to park under the muscadines and do the annual pruning.  Muscadines are a southern grape.  Everyone thought I was crazy to have the trellis so high, about 6 1/2' - but I can mow the grass under it during the summer and just makes it so much easier to work around.  When it comes to pruning I simply park the scaffold under it and hop up.  Then wheel it down to the next length to do.  With some tunes going in the background, I can zone out to the task at hand and do that thankless annual job of pruning.  I got the pruning about 1/2 done yesterday.  If the rain holds off I should be able to finish it up today.

A few years ago we were on an excursion from Savannah to Tybee Island. We stopped at Open Air Fruit-Vegetable Market (endorsed by Paula Deen at the time)...they offered us some samples of Scuppernongs...all it took...good marketing ploy to locals and Yankees...we bought a couple pint containers...stopped back from Tybee and bought a couple more...best "wild grape" or muscadine I've ever tasted. A very short season from what I understand. Truly another Southern cuisine.

Ever tried "bolled" goobers? Grapes are good, but ya need fiber.

Tried those while visiting a buddy in Georgia. Must be an ACQUIRED taste! Definitely NOT for me!

Me either...wife & daughter like 'em...maybe I should have tried some that wasn't from a roadside stand at a gas station.

Guess it depends on which roadside stand. A gas station was the purveyor of my first bolled goober experience and, I loved 'em. But, I've had some from other establishments that weren't so good. The good ones came from a crock pot and, were highly seasoned. The others were just goobers in soggy shells.

just got a request to build a simple walnut edge grain cutting board, 12x19 or so.

 

one board, 1x6 nominal, 7 feet long - $50.25!

 

lumber is not cheap anymore.

Trust me, you don't want to see me in high heels... unless you enjoy watching people suffer and fall. Used to wear them all the time in high school... Army broke me of that.

got this hung yesterday.  my wife did the needlework (many months worth), i made the frame (a few days worth).

 

i cut the glass too.

A couple good things on my weekend so far.

The wife finally seen the corner table - and ok'd it!

I did get up back and finish pruning the muscadines.  It's always a great relief to have that job done.  Even though it can be done most anytime Dec.-Mar.; it just hangs over my head until I call it done.

 

 

I have lost half of the vines the last two years due to storms dropping dead pine trees from next door onto the trellis.

Hopefully the large one close enough to do damage have all come down...
