May 26, 20179 yr Author Popular Post Igor is on strike, as usual.....I wouldn't let him ride my broom home... Fought the casework tonight......Drilled pilot holes into the webframes. then counterbored them. Wasn't as much room as I would have liked.... Stood up the face face and one side panel.....couple of tries to clamp things up. Spread a bit of glue around, and add the webframe. Then, try to single-handedly flip it over and add the second webframe.......then repeat with the other side panel.....wound up with a handful of glue, to boot.....this thing is HUGE... This is about 2/3rds, looking through to the front of the case. I set the bottom frame 3/4" low, to allow for a 3/4" plywood shelf...now up to the nose-bleed section.. Not counting the top, it stands at 6' tall. Top frame is flush with the top edge of the sides. I'll use it to attach the top itself to it. Right after these pictures were taken, I had to turn the case around, so I can work on the front. Counter bored screws, with plugs to attach the face frame to the sides. Decided that was more than enough for one day. Edited May 26, 20179 yr by steven newman

May 29, 20179 yr Author Kind of cramped down there, right now.....was doing a write-up on the squares I have. The only place to get a picture was on a 1 x 10 I had sitting there to cut down for the top of the Pantry.. Board lays on two benches....and sticks through the casework. The "other " squares... All but one of my Try squares.....I was also showing how to check one of these for square....Had a Red Handled one First line ( the one under the handle will be talked about in a bit) Then flip the square over and mark a line on the first line.. In this case, both lines are a single line, no gaps. Yes, it is a Stanley Handyman....well cared for one. back to the board. I had marked two cut lines, to give me two pieces to glue up into a top....how to cut something this big... Board was laying in a bad spot, the mortise jig was still on the bench, under this end. Got out the Disston D-8 that I had gotten back from the sharpeners.... I did find a use for that jig, though. needed a way to hold the boards, and still get my fat body alongside the bench to use a plane.... far end can rest on the bench, I don't think it is going anywhere, now.. Something like this. Stanley #5-1/2 jumbo jack as a jointer. After both boards were jointed, decided to see how well they fit together These are sitting there "Dry" no glue, no clamps, other than the one at the mortise jig.....might just do? I spread some Elmer's along one edge, mooshed the boards into the glue by sliding the one board back and forth a few times....then added a few clamps.. Had to raise the far end a bit, for the clamps to get in there. My back was rubbing on the casework...wasn't a whole lot of room. As for a few of the other squares in the shop... Been using the little fella to set depth of cuts....might find a use for this other pile.. Haven't used these all that much... These, however find a lot of use in the shop...mainly laying out a dovetail or two... Well, that was it for this morning....stat tuned..

May 29, 20179 yr Popular Post Steven just how do you fint the time to do all this works and take all the pics and write about it too? It is mind boggling.
May 29, 20179 yr Author Plywood has been placed into the shop. Had Lowes cut the HEAVY full sheet down a couple times. Have two panels @ 3/4" x 30" x 48" and one at 3/4'' x 35" x 48" Have the top panel out of the clamps, have it marked for what sizes it needs to be. Then I can start making shelves.
May 30, 20179 yr Author Popular Post While waiting on the pizza hut driver to show up.... Top is out of the clamps. Has been trimmed down to size, and the ends cut square. Used this to flatten both faces. Used a quarter to layout a curve for the front two corners, and beltsanded to the lines.. Block plane to add a bevel to the edges, and plane the end grain smooth. used a drill to make a few slotted holes in the top webframe. used some of the new screws to attach the top to the webframe.. 2 screws in the back, 2 in the front, 1 on each end....should be enough? Maybe tomorrow afternoon-ish, I can cut this down into shelves... New screws? yep, the ones I was on the way to buy, when I stopped at the garage sale... One on the left I already had....stay tuned... Pizza is here, beer is getting warm...
May 30, 20179 yr The pantry is lookin' good! Nice tri-squares, I have an old stanley but had to retire it, no longer square. Even my 12" Stanley combination square is get to the point that I can't use it for precise work.
May 30, 20179 yr Author Popular Post Ok, trying out that "new" camera. Had to go through and resize all of mine, and erase 135+ of someone's vacation to Tybee Island ( wasn't me..) So, for today's mis-adventures.....shelves. Had to clear off a BIG area on the bench....still wasn't enough. Clamped the plywood panel to the bench. and laid out a few cuts....part being cut off hanging out in the middle of the walkway... Then turm it around, and cut it to length.....finally got the bottom shelf in place.. Camera seems to take a bit better pictures? Clamp to pull things square while I add a few screws. Space in the back for the plywood back. Next.. I used those cleats to help layout the size needed. Saw is a small 6-1/2" SKIL saw. Hey, it IS a vintage saw, right? Cleatsare to attach the shelves to the case, all will be fixed in place. Cleats go on with two screws in slotted holes.. Bottom of this shelf is 14" above the bottom shelf....cereal box height. This next shelf gets a cleat along the back edge.. As will the rest of these shelves. It gives me a place to screw the back to. cleat stops just short of the end, to clear the side cleats... Ok, 3 screws each end, into the cleats, no glue. I added a thin piece of pine to the edge of the shelf with just glue. The wide pine board? It is there as a clamping caul, while the glue sets up. I managed to get 3 shelves out of the first panel, with just this strip left over.. well, I have almost as much sawdust on top of my head as I got hair. Breaktime, maybe a bit of supper? Need to set the height for the next shelf, make some cleats. and maybe go out and buy some more screws. Wasn't a whole lot of room down there, today.. This is after cutting shelf#3. Vise is run out to support the cutoff. Then I could cut this to length ( 27-1/2") The saw and I got a workout, today...glad it wasn't the big 7-1/4" Craftsman saw. It weighs about twice what the little Skil does. I'm bushed....maybe tomorrow? Stay tuned, this will soon be upstairs in the kitchen....

June 2, 20179 yr Author Popular Post Ok, down to the last of the shelves, now. Had to clean the bench off, even Couple of sticks to sit a panel on, so I don't cut into my bench.. This is my saw guide. This is also right after I cut a shelf off of the panel. Off-set matches the distance between the saw kerf, and the edge of the foot plate. One c clamp to hold it, and that cleat under it to keep it square. About like this. here I was cutting for width. I can also set it for length. I glued and screwed a cleat along the back edge as a "nailer" to screw the back on... Might have a big enough square..... Do not want to hear about not having enough room in a shop.... Thing is also getting heavy. All five shelves are now in place, glued and screwed to cleats. That plywood panel back there is the top part of the back.... I barely had enough room to get behind this thing to install this part of the back. Still have to cut another panel to width... 48" one way, and soon to be 27-3/8" wide the other way. Might need that cart to haul this thing up the stairs.. Methinks it is now Beer:30......time to call it a day. Have to rest up for the rust hunts....stay tuned...
June 3, 20179 yr Author Popular Post Ok, had a couple strong-armed boys carry that thing upstairs.... To where the Boss can paint it. I can now add the back, and work on the doors. Then this thing will go over against the wall by the fridge. I played straw Boss for the move.
