May 11, 20179 yr Popular Post Whew, working up a sweat now.... Hauled those 6 pieces of 2x4 down to the shop. Sat the three longer ones aside, for now.....at least until after a break.... The three shorter ones, well, they had a date with the bandsaw. I set up the resaw jig, just enough to peel off the edges past the rounded over stuff.. Maybe a 1/4"? Once all six edges were trimmed, a small plane was landed.. Ohio Tool Co. # 0-7 Jointer plane. I wanted the edges straight, free of sawmarks, and as square to the sides as I could get them.. Imagine walking around in a pile of this stuff.. Once all three boards were jointed along the sawn edges, I dug up a 3/4" thick piece of scrap. A pair of lines down the center of one edge marked a center line to saw. Reset the jig to the center of the two marks. recheck the bandsaw's table for square to the blade. Since I had to raise the saw guide a bit. Ran the three through, trying to stay centered... After a LONG break, I'll come back and plane the saw marks off. Might need that old jointer plane, again. 3 boards almost done, three to go.. Handsome critters, ain't they. hope to have them all S4S by this weekend. Might need a new blade in the bandsaw... Grandson will be here this weekend, I'll have him haul all them shavings out to the old garden plot. Not sure what I'll build out of these...yet. I also have a pile of other Pine scraps......stay tuned.
May 11, 20179 yr I'm tuned as long as it's not Pay-Per-View...Don't need the extra income right now. It might force me into a higher tax bracket
May 11, 20179 yr Author Had to make sure "Lew's Mallet" got into a picture or two.... The second three 2xs....are now a bit shorter......had to cut a bit more out of them. First three came out between 21" and 26" long....latest bunch are around 12" or so. Thrust Bearing ( the one in the guides, behind the blade) is locking up. May need to find a new one...soon...

Take it off, wipe it down with some WD-40, soak it in a small container of engine oil over night...remove, wipe off, let sit on a clean rag for a bit...will buy you some time if not to far gone. May 13, 20179 yr STEVE THOSE SHAVIN R CATS MEOW FOR LAYING ACROSS PICTURE FRAME CORNERS(those 45 degree cuts glueing'm , down,) THEY ARE VERY STRONG.
May 15, 20179 yr Author Popular Post Bearing has been cleaned up, the "post" it sits on is cleaned off. Made note of which way the bearing was put on, and turned it around, to let the saw spin it the other way. Lumber has been bought at Menards....four 1 x 8 x 6', two 1 x 10 x 6', and three 1 x 4 x 6'......will need to make panel glue ups of the wider stuff. Two sides and a top. Might get a few shelves, too. 1x4s are stiles, rails are the resawn pine. Might get a few shelves by gluing up the other resawn pine. Boss wants a Pantry Cupboard built......
May 17, 20179 yr Author Pine boards have been hauled down to the shop....all nine of them. May need to go out and buy a few more, as needed. letting the "new" boards get used to the shop, while I figure out HOW to glue up two side panels. Made from a pair of 1 x 8 x 6' planks. Then glue a top panel up. Maybe out of a 1 x 10? Then glue some shelves up. get a plywood panel for the back....then maybe worry about the two doors. Saving the resawn pine for the doors....maybe two frame and panel thingys. Will need to move things around a bit, to do the long glue-ups.....bench is only 5' long....
May 19, 20179 yr Author Panel for side No. 1 is in the clamps...a LOT of clamps. Had to clear the bench completely off, add a few 2x3 stands to raise the glue up off the bench. needed space to slide half the clamps under the panel. letting the glue cure for a while, before the other side's panel gets glued up.....6' long panels can get a bit heavy... Film @ 2300 hrs...
May 19, 20179 yr Author Popular Post Glue ups are either in the clamps or just out of them.. Glue up No. 1, after a few hours, the clamps came off.. 2xs to hold the next panel up enough to add a few clamps.... Hard to get 6' of 14-1/4" wide panel in one picture....Almost can't get through between the end of the panel, and the washer.... Kind of sticks out there. Have since taken it over and stood it up against the first panel. These will be the sides of the Pantry Cupboard. 3/4" x 14-1/2" x 72"....Width of the Pantry is to be about...31" OA. May need a bit of help getting the finished project up the steps to the Kitchen....
May 23, 20179 yr Author Ok, Single Brain Cell Sketch Up has come up with a few "details" about this Pantry project... Resaw one 1 x4 x 6' the make the two sides of the face frame. Crosscut a second one for the top and bottom "rails" of the face frame Resaw the third 1x4 x 6' to make a couple webframes. Shorter resawn 2x4s to help out with the frames. Need to BUY a sheet of 3/4" plywood, crosscut at BORG into three pieces...3/4 x 33" x 48". I can then rip into the shelves. Will add a pine edge along the front of each shelf. May be able to use the remainder as a back for the case. Doors, I have been told, are to match the existing in the kitchen. Leaves out frame & panel doors. May just do a couple glue-ups into flat panel doors. Good thing I bought a new blade for the bandsaw.
May 23, 20179 yr Author Ok, back is hurting, time to stop for the day..... Tore the bandsaw apart, lower thrust bearing is FUBAR, tried to remove the dang thing....nada. Leave it and groove it. Took a while to reset the saw to where it would cut some lumber... First up, needed to rip a 1x4 x 6' right down the middle.....needed two "stiles" for the case's front.. Need to get them clamps off, someday... next, a second 1x4 needed cut to length. A bit wide for the bandsaw, and too long for the mitre box, so.. Seems I just rebuilt that saw, too. There was a knotty piece right in the middle. Gone now. These will become the rails of the face frame. I used the skinny parts to lay out for a few half lap joints. usual suspects. WIDE chisel to pop the waste off. Got the four ends done, came time for the stiles... Needs a little trimming. One rail is 5" off the floor. The other goes at the top.. I used the chisel here as a pare cut . Smooths things out...Test fits.. I guess it will do. Got all of these fitted. time for something else.. More cross cuts, more resaw. These are for two webframes. Might need to pretty them up a bit, even though they will not be seen. Used this to smooth down one of the 6' long rails Just a #5-1/2 Jack plane. As for the cast of the usual suspects.. Most of the hand tool bunch.... One of two saws used. Also had to move all the clothes from the washer over and into the dryer....made 4 cents, too. I think that will do for one day...stay tuned

May 24, 20179 yr Author Popular Post webframes. Spent a bit of time, running a hand plane or two to joint the sawn edges straight and smooth.....made a royal mess on my clean floor.. The Stanley #5-1/2 was making big curls, rolled them right up. The Millers Falls #11 worked over the shorter pieces. Shorties get tenons. Set then reset a jig on the bandsaw. All eight tenons are alike. The "thing sitting there to the left? Is a jig I use when chopping a mortise, I can clamp the part in place, after marking the layout lines.. Visegrips finger clamp, works fast easy to use. I use the backsaw to make a kerf cut at an angle, then chop a hole at the far end, then pop the waste out.. Then a dry fit Rotate, repeat until all four corners can be dry fitted, with a square.. Jig also can be a "Third Hand" How square? Looks good enough? I cut a few stiffeners to length, drilled a few pilot holes. Small drill had a counter sink bit.. Things were ready for some glue... Since I had both frames done. Third hand helps with the glue up, too. Bottom frame gets two stiffeners, as a bottom shelf will sit on the frame. Top frame was a bit easier.. Only needs one. The top of the case will sit on this frame. So, that was this mornings efforts. Waiting on glue to dry, before I start a glue up on the face frame.... Maybe tomorrow, IF I can find enough room, a little bit of asembly MIGHT get done? Still need to buy a sheet of 3/4" plywood for the shelves and the back. And, glue up the 31" long top. Lunch time ! What's for lunch?
