@Gene HoweReally cool ideas Gene...I especially like the second set-up....do you have some type of set-up jig to ensure the insert is parallel to the saw blade?

I checked the sole plate first. The factory holes in the plate were right on. The insert has a groove in the center where the bolt holes are drilled. Works a treat.

A cheap way to do the set up that Gene used is to mount a straight edge cut from ply or MDF to a ply strip wide enough to do right side of saw and left side. Then make a cut and that is where the cut line will be every time. the one jig I do not have a pic of

Speaking of which, it's easy to do on a router table, too. Unless it's humongous.

I like having zero clearance inserts for my TS but the prices for the UMHW blanks that are pre cut get expensive. I was in the cooking supply isle at Wal Mart and saw some white plastic cutting boards. There was a large one that was 1/2" thick and big enough I knew I could get like 3-4 blanks out of. The best part was that it was only like $12. When I got it to the shop I first ripped and cross cut it to general size then took my saws insert and screwed it to the blank.  Using a router and pattern bit I routed the final shape and then using a rabbit bit I cut a lip around the blank. I drilled holes for the retainer pin and leveling screws and away you go. For what my one store bought insert costs I was able to make three.

dollar store has those cutting boards ... for a dollar...

I've picked up some pretty decent ones at yard sales and flea markets for 50 cents or less...usually clean 'em good with bleach &/or simple green just to be on safe side.
