it took 27 gallons, but it's done. After I rolled the storage room ceiling (primer) and really wore myself out, my S-I-L got a pro level airless sprayer and sprayed the rest of the primer. We put the vapor barrier stuff on the ceiling, and this stuff really was/is just that....to my surprise. I'm sure it's not what a 6-mil plastic sheet would have been , but it will do. Anyway, after he primed it, I painted the storage room the yellow for cheeriness and visibility. That back left corner in the storage room (no outlets) is where I'll put racks for the wood stash. The light blue in the shop is/was supposed to be a very light gray...oh well. I've started moving tools and stu…

"high bay"? My shop has 10' ceilings, and I'm thinking the lights labeled "high bay" aren't necessarily needed for that height. I still hope to put in LED lights, but am a little puzzled about whether the will work just fine at 10' or not.

I've been at the new house for less than a year, getting a shop together was a big priority, so I got it about 80% of the way there, then started in production work. Still needs some more things assembled and built, when I get a round tuit. Started off with a big empty, dark basement. Stairway and HVAC was in the center. So the first task was to build partition walls, doors, new 20A 120V and 220V circuits, and lights. About 1/3 of the area partitioned off as clean area for storage and HVAC. Here's some of the areas: Finish storage (some of it) Spray booth / finish room (needs a bit more assembly and lighting to be used) …

I mentioned in another post my drywall guy isn't going to hang the plastic vapor barrier on the ceiling of my shop. That leaves it for me to do, or skip it (I don't want to skip it). I've done this once before on a much smaller and lower ceiling, and it was a pain in the butt. I stapled it up only to find in the early going the plastic would tear off the staples while I was working it into place across the span. I did get it done, but that was me only and it took all day to do a 24x20 section of the ceiling. If I do this I'll ask the S-I-L and maybe a GS or 2 to help. I'm guessing 6 mil plastic (last time it was 4 mil) will help. What if I fasten the starting point with …

While waiting on the lumber supplies to arrive, thought I'd take you along on a $0.05 tour of the place.. basically what I see after the stumble down the steps to the shopMay try to get a better picture, sometime... Turn a bit to the left....that "blue" thing is the trash bag for the shop. Have to watch out, if you look too long at the bandsaw, you might trip over.. This thing, as it sits right by the steps, right above it? Most of the shop's screwdrivers and nut drivers. Looking past the shelf unit, you can see.. Shop has a dresser. Walk towards this, past the bandsaw.. Bit of a mess. Old tabletop sitting o…

at least I hope they are. I had mentioned in an earlier post I was having trouble getting an estimate to drywall my shop. To update the situation, so far I have called 8 contractors and asked if they were interested. at this point 3 have actually showed up and one excused himself saying he couldn't get the help he needed to do it. For the other 2, one guy gave me an estimate on the spot. He figured how many 8' sheets it would take, multiplied it by his rate and had a number that was about 50% more than I was expecting. I have no idea what this should cost, but I had guessed it was a $5-6K job. His estimate was $9100, and at this point was the only estimate I had. The rema…

I had live music in my shop this past Saturday! Our youngest daughter was studying on the dining room table for her AP History exam, our oldest daughter wanted to practice at the same time, scholastic's take priority over all in our home, even over good music, so our oldest girl needed a place with her friend to practice for an open mic event that same night at a local music store that holds open sessions on Saturdays. They asked if they could come out and practice while I work. I turned off my radio and opted for live. Hey, free live music while I work! What more can ya ask for! Typically I don't like things on my table saw, I'll make an exception, this time. This a …

My shop is as far as I can go without the walls being rocked. it's insulated and wired, and once the rock is up and finished I'll be able to add heat, insulate the ceiling, and install the DC...then move in. But so far I've called 7 contractors to get the drywall done (one just yesterday, so they don't count in these stats). 2 showed up to draw up an estimate, the last one over a week ago and the first one about 3 weeks ago. Nothing yet. One took some preliminary info and said he would stop out to look things over, still haven't heard from him. Didn't get call backs from the others. I noticed these guys are very suspicious when they do call back, sometimes making me think…

Currently my shop is a block walled basement with a walk out section. Given the advice on insulation I have received and my location. I will insulate with infofast EX 2.5 panels against the block wall. Then Termax 1.55 for a combined R20. The Thermax does NOT need drywall or other covers but I am concerned on the pristine white appearance. With the primary use being a shop what would you cover your walls in to maximize the use of the space? Plywood, OSB, or leave it as the Thermax surface?

Well, since the Storage Dresser is now done, time to start the next stage of the remodel. Moving day, day 1... Cleaned all my stuff off all the appliances down here. So, where did all the stuff go? Top drawer filled right up, and it even closes.....ooh, ah! Second drawer down is almost filled up, and it also closes... Eh, not quite full, yet? Will have to work on that, I guess. Fourth drawer down is empty, at the moment. Bottom drawer has the "Book of Auger Bits" and not much else...I still want to be able to MOVE this thing.....as for the top? This will have to do, for now...... Monda…

but I thought I'd show it anyway. I had asked about getting my partition wall up back in early November. Then life intervened (and Mother Nature with winter) and i didn't get much done after that question. But the days have been unusually warm so I was able to get some things done. the big one being I finished the partition wall. In one of the quirks of fate that seldom (never) happen to me, I had bought some number of 10' 2x6s and 3-10' treated 2x6 (sole plates) to build it. After I was done I had a 2' section of 2x6 lumber left, and a 4' piece of the treated wood. Typically I go back to the store (twice) for more wood. Anyway, here's some pics but remember: I am not a c…

Had a pair of visitors this morning, in the Dungeon Shop....They came over from Columbus , OH. Quick tour of the Dresser Build, then on the road back to the Columbus area.....with me riding "Shotgun" Stopped at Andrew P. 's basement shop first. NICE shop, mainly power tools, but still a LOT of hand tools. He makes more boxes than I do. Load up, and head further into town. Around east 6th street.....stopped at a hole in the wall cabinet shop/ guitar shop. Owner has been selling a LOT of old arn, from around the area. Our other partner -in-crime in today's adventures, Chris H. seems to have bought an older Delta Cabinet saw. Took th…
