Ok, shop in the midst of a tool cabinet build....decided to pare the pile of tools down a bit, so the cabinet won't take up the entire shop... yankee items? Between the screwdrivers, and the push drills....needed to reduce the herd a bit on both...(Brass one is now retired..)so... Went through these...any defects caused one to disappear from the crowd....broken/missing springs, selectors, prawls...bent shaft....and I was left with these...and the singleton.. For then BIG jobs..The push drills? I retired the Millers Falls ones...since I have 16 tips for the 3 North Brothers #41s... Just need to learn to sharpen them tips... squares...combo squares needed cleaned up... Will keep both of the 6" squares...trying to decide on one or two of the 12" ones...the speed square.. I use that to figure out what angles to set the mitersaw to. There are a few all-metal try squares...all went into a drawer. Will sort through the wood handled ones tomorrow. Egg Beater drills have their own til...limited space...helps control the size of the crowd. Brace drills...were getting out of hand...14 of them! Soo..today...sorted through the mess at bit... Green circles are from Germany. left one is worn out, right one was retired, anyway, Red circle? Made in Japan...IF you see a brace head with those two lines...walk away. There be potmetal inside of it. The other 2 were locked up, and or bent...There was also a clone of a Stanley No. 945-8...no markings, wrist handle frozen in place...Into the drawer with them. Which left 8 more to sort through.. This be the P.S. & W. Samson #8012.....12" sweep. Not the largest one I have... but close. Fancy chuck will hold tightly to about any type of bit you might use... And this be a Stanley No. 730-14.....14" sweep, bearings everywhere...for those really BIG bits. This is one of two 10" sweep braces....a Millers Falls No. 22..the other? The rings on that handle are made of Pewter. Drill was sold as a Keen Kutter N 104.....methinks it was made by Millers Falls as a #1053....10" 8" sweep drills? One of 3 "good" ones...from about 1905...Goodell Pratt Co. No. 408...uses a stick shift to go from forward to locked to reverse..shaped like a loop. the other 8" braces are twins And.. Two. Stanley 945-8....trying to decide which to keep....there are two 6" sweep drills..( keeping both..) Keen Kutter KB6.....made by Millers falls as a #1054...I think..the other is a Stanley.. marked as a "X3 6in" and is for the USA O. D. ( United States Army Ord Dept. ) Need to go to Menard's buy a stack of either 1 x 10 x 4', or the 1 x 12 x 4' boards, on sale I hope...and then build a cabinet to house most of the "good" hand toys...er...TOOLS. Stay tuned...this might take a while... The "Before"? Might make use of some of the wooden parts....And, find a shelf for the power tools. Maybe some pegs to hold the braces on....maybe stack them up on that peg?

Took a look at my Starret squares and found different markings for hardened on each. The 12" has hardened marked on the rule and the square frame but not on the center finder. The 6" set has hardened marked on the rule only. I know this is an original set for sure because I still have the box. The angle head has hardened marked on the rule only also. It is not stamped on the frame. I wonder if the hardened rules were used with the common sets but a true hardened set would have the frames marked as hardened too.

And since I can't go to the shop until tomorrow, decided to clean out the tool tote that sits here by the desk.. Ok, found a few hand saws....a big fancy hacksaw, a crosscut saw, and a very OLD Disston compas/keyhole saw......There are some HUGE rasps still in the bottom of the tote. Two brace drills, one in very good condition, the other one not really. There was an 8" long "Tri Square" that even had a level in the handle ( level works) Overall feel suggests it is by Stanley....There is also a "Defiance" combo square, The kind that has a slot for about half the length of the ruler. Will have to look again, to see what Model # it is...looked like a #1221? Now that I went to all the trouble to make that Drill Bit Book....I found five more bits.....3 are the 16/16", one is a 18/16", and one is a 6/16"....guess I could keep them for the Millers Falls brace I found in there? There was also an eggbeater drill, the hollow handle has a metal "window" you open, the shake out a drill bit from inside. Luftkin #X46 ruler, with the brass extension piece. 72" ruler. A 50' tape measure, with a locking crank on it's metal case. And a couple 16' metal cased tape measures.... Found out where those BIG calipers from Starrett was hiding. A little tack hammer, with a loose head. Will try to tighten that up later.... A chalk box ( new one, by strait line) and a bottle of blue chalk.... A Stanley No. 46-825 Sliding bevel gauge, black plastic handle....and a General No.810 honing guide... Hacksaw was a Parker Line. There was a small mallet down in the bottom of the tote, I inherited it from my late FIL. I used it as a pattern to turn the one I use now. Somehow, a few screwdrivers got dropped in there, including all the Yankee ones, and both of my #41 push drills....Grrr. No wonder this tool tote weighed as much as I did.....Now I get to clean a few up. and stash a few away.......looking like about next month will be a huge tool sale on FeeBay for the shop here... Maybe when I can get the tripod upstairs, I might take a few shots of all the finds.....good or bad...?

Bright and early, game was a-foot! Local campground was having their "annual" garage sale today. Took a bit of scouting around, dodging trees, golfcarts, and other drivers on a one lane trail...The Boss found a tree ornament she liked, and I found three things I liked... We each spent ...$5. For a sense of scale...the square is 10'' long. Figured I could clean these up, before Andrew showed up Three Rosewood handles...the square has Stanley and a Pat. 12 29 96 stamped on the blade. Numbers are readable on both sides. Screws to hold the brass plate in place. Larger bevel gauge has a solid brass thumbscrew. Haven't found any names on it or the small one. Small one has a lever to lock. Was sharpening a chisel when Chris showed up. Had a Stanley Cordovan #4 that needed a bit of a tune up. Did not take all that long, but the plane was making see-through shavings when he left......sole needed work, chipbreaker needed work, frog seat....was "special" There was a metal plate under the frog, got that out, dressed the bottom of the frog, and the face. Re-assembled it back together. Seemed to work nicely. Lots of talking and teaching going on. Finally, I got treated to supper, then he went home. Ready for a nap, now.....

We went pickin today in Portland Indiana. This year is the 50th Steam and Gas Engine Show and there are always tables set up with folks ready to wheel but not necessarily deal. About 10 acres of tables in fact. I was able to buy three items that I really didn't need but wanted. I bought a #20 7 1/2" Stanley Sweetheart tri square with rosewood handle for $5, a Stanley 110 plane for $3 and a Starrett #4 12 inch square for $22. I paid a bit more for the Starrett square than I wanted but it is like new and I have a twin to it at home. Here's the obligitory pics for John Moody.

Not all that exciting but here are a few estate sale finds of recent. Brown and Sharpe, Starrett, and Craftsman in the mix. The box scraper is Stanley Sweetheart. Most of these were cleaned by me before pictures.
