I haven’t had much time for my shop work but I did finish the butterfly’s I used yellowheart & red heart. I used double sided tape to hold the pieces when I cut the designs out and then swapped the designs before glueing. They are about 3” sq. They may be used as frig magnets, on a necklace or as ornaments

This project started with a left over scrap piece I just couldn't throw away. The beautiful wood made me think I had to make something else out of it. As you can see, it is quite small, but still a vase. Not quite sure of the wood type, could be a couple I've used. Anyway, it sure is a beautiful wood.

10/15 years ago I was able to get some spalted Box Elder pieces. I had never seen a wood with red in it. I was fascinated. The pictures are of the incomplete pieces. I went back to get some more and they didn't have any. However they had some that looked nearly as red. I was going to pick it up and looked closer when I saw a sign. "This wood is a member of the Sumac family and some people can have the same reaction as they would with poison Ivy." WOA!!! I could immediately see me in the hospital after handling and breathing in the dust.

When I got my refinishing kit, it came with three colors of universal colorants, red, yellow, and blue. These are known to artists as the primary colors. Other colors can be made for them, so I could mix up paints, glazes and toners with them. In addition, I got bottles of white and black. Mixing the primaries would give me other colors. Adding white lightens the color and creates a tint. Adding black darkens the color and creates a shade. Adding both black and white (gray) creates a tone. The universal colorants are the things that you see at the paint store on a carousel that squirts colors into paint to make the color on the chip you want. Various "bases" have varying degrees of white already mixed in. They have lots of universal colorants, I suppose just to make their work a bit easier. (c) 2018, Keith Mealy
