    Red Alder Bowls...... W I P

So I am thinking I'm going to have to take an in person class some where in my area to get the basics of the gouges. I decided to scrap my poplar laminated project entirely since it was just too far gone and not to liking. How ever with the red alder I purchased from a new local lumber supplier. Which is very nice but gotta drive a bit to get there. Either way started off of course I used only EWT tools for this. I finally FINALLY got a bowl shape that I can be completely happy with. I'm still currently working on it. Once I glued all 3 of the chunks of wood together. Half way through starting I realized oh I can get 2 bowls out of this one piece. So I cut the blank in half and started the work. Got a lot done on the first one but here are the photos.

    Remains of projects past...

Just getting started on the late fall craft show inventory. Found some interesting designs online and decided to try them out. Will get to making better versions of these when I can utilize specifically cut wood selections rather than just what's in the 'remains' piles. The usual culprits - walnut, maple, mesquite, alder and white oak. The white oak was recovered from a JD barrel planter that was retired and replaced. 'Bout time I actually posted something rather than just click on an emoji or make a smart - @&% remark!

    I know...

..I'm not supposed to be playing with sharp objects. For some strange reason I decided to get a jump on the late year craft shows. I don't recall seeing any of these on other vendor tables so... The dark blades are mesquite and the light color are hickory. The handles are walnut, mesquite, alder, maple and hickory. Finished with mineral oil and beeswax. Now, on to some more bowls!

    Stain on alder

I am in Asheville , NC and my son wants shelves to match what looks like tigerwood. We know it is stained . Looking at maybe alder or red oak. I am familiar with oak but how dark of a stain will alder take (this looks like mahogany, maybe little lighter). And how easy will it be to get that dark color on it. Have not worked with alder before. Or is it better to just use the oak?

    Shoe cabinet

Here's a glimpse at the latest project in my shop. This is a shoe cabinet for a long time client done in a (my first) frameless (almost European) style. Finish is Ipswich Pine (actually had Sherwin Williams make it in their product vs. Minwax) stain with 2 coats semi gloss (for build) and two coats satin. Wood is Alder. Different for me but I like the simplicity, which is what she wanted. Hope she likes it.
