Friday, October 19, 2018, What’s on your Patriot Woodworker agenda?

Well it seems as if fall has arrived. Last week it was in the 90’s and this week we are in the low 70’s. I love the cooler weather and we are busy in the shop.    Today we are working on making and 8’, 2” thick Cherry Cross. Working on the half lap joints right now.    At the assembly table we are ready pieces for cutting boards.      And of course we still have cornhole boards everywhere.      Last week I build this display piece for the range to put AR rifles in a horizontal position.      i used my CNC to cut the mortises for the upright pieces. Finished it and took it to the range.      So lots going on here and we are readying for Christmas.    Whats on on your weekend agenda?    I always love love to see your projects and hear about what you are working on.    Share your photos and projects.    Whatever you you do have fun and work safe!

    Tenon Cutters and Reamer

Entering my Windsor chair-making adventure and tooling up, while I have the funds, I am purchasing what I can and as quick as possible before something comes up around our home that my "machinery sell off fund pool" has to be tapped, naw naw naw, not this time, it'll be spent before we get a flat tire, or a busted water heater. I purchased this set of tenon cutters and reamer from one of my favorite resources for Windsor chair making, http://handtoolwoodworking.com/   These tools came as a set, a leg tenon cutter, a arm-stump tenon cutter, and a 1/2″ spindle tenon cutter, plus one six-degree reamer and one 5/16″ dowel plate. These tools are specific to the Windsor tradition, I am beyond ecstatic to have these on my work bench, they feel great, works of art within themselves. They'll be a pleasure to use.   I can't wait to build my own shave-horse and sit in it, and start shaving, and rounding, and sawing and much more. Once I get going, I'll be sure to blog my experience. Thanks for sharing in my excitement!

    Kitchen Project for the Boss

Ok, so much for a vacation from the shop.....The Boss has seen a Project she wants built.... Hmmm, more Flat-Pack....she wants this to replace this ugly thing.. When this was built, it was based on a 4 drawer Chester Drawers I was selling....then it became a pantry...and now a catch-all...open them doors at your own risk... Too tall, too wide, too deep, too full of... Already had some oak on hand.. 1 x12 x 3'6",  three 3/4 x 6"   and two at 3/8" thick x 6".    Not nearly enough....sat down to make a drawing...while a second load of Oak sits around, getting used to the house... World Class Drafting Table?   Tape measure to check a few sizes I need to match... Natasha:   "You have Plan, Darlink?" Boris:  "I always have Plan, they don't always work out, but I always have Plan" A front view.   And, because i am frugal, and don't want to waste a second sheet of paper...flip this over.. Basic sizes called out.   Locations of shelves.    Cubby holes changed to Drawers...Oak? Counting what I had on hand..there is around 20bf of Oak sitting here...the new arrivals? Seem to have a bit of grain to them...and for me to work either around, or use... Drawer fronts? And.. Not all the grain I can use, though.. I will need some 1 x 3 stock....Hmmm.  And the "bundle"...has a couple 3/8" thick boards...might be to build the paneled doors?    Bookcase was built back in the mid 1980s...BTW.   So...get the work jeans back on, tomorrow....and cut a few planks, and glue up a few side panels?  Will do the base unit first...then the topper. Will see how long this project takes...stay tuned..

  • Education

Education One of the many projects we are working on is a wiki for our online community. A wiki is a great way for woodworkers and enthusiasts to share their knowledge to others, and to impart their knowledge for others to learn from, and utilize as well for their own benefit. We hope you'll consider being a wiki contributor. Research Do you love researching? Do you like to write about subjects in a factual non-biased style? Do you like leaving your footprint of knowledge behind for others to use? If you do, then you should contribute to The Patriot Woodwiki.
There are tens of thousands of subjects to research and write about. Surely there is a niche that is near and dear to your heart that you would love to write about and share. Just a few of the subjects being written about already in our wiki are: Notable people, both past and present in the woodworking arts, crafts, and trades. Material Processing, anything that humans use to process the main medium of wood, is being researched and written about on our wiki. Dendrology, the study of trees and how humans use this most valuable resource to our globe.   Wiki Catagories Dendrology Education History Literature Material Processing Media Merchants People Safety Wood Works   Closing Remarks There are many more interesting subjects you can participate in and help our knowledge base of information grow and mature. We hope to see you in our community wiki, and we hope you leave your "research mark" for others in the future to glean from and learn and add too as well.

    Our Mission

Objective Of course just like most online woodworking communities we are centralized in the arts, crafts, and trades that are woodworking. But, we have another focus in our Patriot Woodworker community, we are the only woodworking community that was founded on our care and concern for our disabled veterans. Mission 1st To create an online woodworking community that is sensitive and respective of the men and women who are serving and have served in our United States Military. To foster a sense of community that surrounds our common goals of care and concern for our United States Military Veterans. To provide aid when we are able, to disabled veterans who are woodworkers, who may be in need of aid in the form of tools, and supplies and machinery in order to keep them in their shops, productive and happy., To raise awareness of the challenges our United States Military Veterans face after service. To fund-raise for various veterans charitable organizations through our own auctions and raffles. Secondary statement To provide an online woodworking forum experience that fosters inclusion of all walks, all talent levels, all races and creeds and all people's regardless of sexual orientation or lifestyles. To provide an online woodworking forum experience that is free of negativity, drama, rumors and gossip, and self-interest topics and posts. To provide an online woodworking forum experience that is family friendly, and mature in mannerisms. To encourage a respectful and nurturing environment so that woodworkers, both beginners and advanced, and all that in between, may share, learn, mentor, teach, and collaborate on ideas and techniques that encompass our craft of woodworking.

  • Laguna Tools

Introduction Laguna Tools owners Catherine and Torben Helshoj immigrated to the United States from Denmark and opened their business in the U.S. They are staunch supporters of our men and women in the Armed Forces here in the United States, they appreciate their hard work and sacrifices and give thanks in many ways. One way is to support The Patriot Woodworker’s projects that are geared towards our American Veterans and especially veterans with disabilities. Laguna Tools History Laguna Tools was founded in 1983 by Torben Helshoj who saw an opportunity to bring high-quality European woodworking machinery to the US. The first tools to be introduced were combination machines and soon lead to Laguna Tools’ most iconic machine, the Italian Bandsaw. Involvement Laguna Tools has been with The Patriot Woodworker's since the early days. Our main contact has been Catherine Helshoj (owner) of Laguna Tools, and she takes a personal interest in the men and women who serve our nation. From one of our early projects with Catherine Helshoj and Collaborative Courts, we came together and we helped Laguna Tools raise money for an organization that takes our "in crisis" veterans off the streets, and directs them back on track.
Laguna Tools is right in the middle of all our veterans outreach project within The Patriot Woodworker, our fighting men and women of our Armed Forces have a great partner in Laguna Tools when it comes to community outreach and compassion towards our veterans. Projects Below is a sample list of just some of our projects in partnership with Laguna Tools. Laguna Tools either donated tools or supplies to the recipient of our projects, or they donated to The Patriot Woodworker for fund-raising.   The Patriot Woodworker Outfits Shop for Visually Impaired Veteran The Patriot Woodworkers Help a high school club Adopt a Wounded Warrior Family for the Holidays 2015 Adopt a Wounded Warrior Family for the Holidays 2016 Adopt a Gold Star Family for the Holidays 2017 Links of Interest Laguna Tools Home Page Laguna Tools Customer Stories Laguna Tools Gallery Laguna Tools YouTube Channel Location Laguna Tools

    Easy Wood Tools

Introduction Easy Wood Tools manufactures wood turning tools and accessories all right here in The United States of America, it was only natural that a great American owned company like Easy Wood Tools, would team up with a great American woodworking online community such as The Patriot Woodworker's.
Easy Wood Tools, Made in America, with American Labor, and sold to the world! Easy Wood Tools History In 2008 Easy Wood Tools began operations in Owensboro, KY as the first manufacturer to offer carbide-tipped woodturning tools. The complicated techniques required when using traditional turning tools and the constant need to sharpen those tools inspired the idea that there must be a better way. Using existing carbide cutters took away much of the frustration of the constant need for sharpening, but they were not designed for woodturning.   Easy Wood Tools partnered with Total Engineered Products and its owner Chris Caliendo. They were tasked with developing the world’s first carbide insert specifically designed for woodturning. The Genuine EWT carbide inserts have been formulated to combine the perfect grade of carbide, and specialized grinding and sharpening techniques that have never used before.   Today, the Caliendo family now owns and operates Easy Wood Tools in Lexington Kentucky and carries forward the tradition and commitment of made in U.S.A. craftsmanship and pride in top quality tools. New product development and commitment to quality, Easy Wood Tools offers a full line of turning tools and accessories.1 Involvement Easy Wood Tools is a staunch supporter or our American fighting men and women serving our Armed Forces, and they also have an abundance of compassion, care, and concern for our veterans who have sacrificed much for us. Easy Wood Tools has been with us since the early days of our existence, the founders of this great American Company (Craig and Donna Jackson) were our original contacts for sponsorship of our woodworking community and the projects we perform throughout the year. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson set the foundations between our two entities and started in motion a great relationship that lasts to this day, in partnership with the current owner Chris Caliendo, who took over the company in 2016. The Caliendo's have been instrumental in helping us fundraise for our veterans projects and other activities we perform, and they are always at the ready to jump in and help especially when it comes to a project involving our veterans. Jim Luely, our main contact with Easy Wood Tools is actually a member of The Patriot Woodworker and he jumps in when he can, and shares his own turning adventures with us, and Mr. Luely is our liaison between The Patriot Woodworkers and the very busy Caliendo's. We are very appreciative for the outlay of goods and sponsorship that Easy Wood Tools has provided our community, in order to facilitate and maintain our veterans projects. Projects Below is a sample list of just some of our projects in partnership with Easy Wood Tools. Woodcraft Supply

Introduction Woodcraft Supply is one of the leading retailers in the industry of woodworking arts, crafts and trades. Read about how Woodcraft became a sponsor of our woodworking community.
Woodcraft, supporters of our fighting men and women of our Armed Forces, and the Veterans our online woodworking community serves. Woodcraft History Founded in Boston in 1928, Woodcraft's operations were moved to Parkersburg, West Virginia in 1989. It's been 80 years since Woodcraft first began selling high quality woodworking tools and supplies out of a one room shop in Boston's North End, and Woodcraft is still firmly committed to providing woodworkers with superior products and expert advice. Involvement Woodcraft is a staunch supporter of the fighting men and women of The United States Military, so it would only stand that we would end up functioning as partners in order to achieve one objective, to express our care and concern for our veterans through grass roots projects that would benefit individual veterans and their families, and by fundraising for various veterans organizations. Since our focus is on the individual veteran with disabilities who is also a woodworker, it was only natural for Woodcraft to support our ongoing projects to help those individuals as well as contribute to our fundraising projects for veterans organizations. Woodcraft has supported our community through an annual supporters fee, those funds help offset the costs of running our community, and help provide funding and material items for our projects throughout the year.   Without our supporters we could not keep our woodworking community alive and functioning, Woodcraft has been with us since our inception in 2010. And Woodcraft has been involved in every single project The Patriot Woodworker's have created.
Woodcraft's dedication to our causes and our woodworkers is greatly appreciated by our community, Woodcraft has been a partner in our veterans causes and interaction with Woodcraft is nothing short of stellar, just like their customer service is on a daily basis.
