Antique Recipe Box and a New Blog
BB1 and 10 others reacted to 4DThinker for a topic
Digging through a box of stuff that came from my folk's house when they down sized and moved out I came across this old oak box. A little google research suggests it was made in the early 1900s. Many other examples can be found with a google image search. This one though has what I think is an assortment of recipes collected by my mother and grandmother. Many of the recipes in it I recognize from family meals served to my family of 8 over several decades. I have no offspring to hand it down to, but thought sharing all the recipes broadly would insure they survive. I started "The Recipe Box" blog to post photos and the text of each recipe from the box. https://myshawwalkerrecipebox.blogspot.com/ I've been adding a few each day. I'll stop when every recipe in the box has been posted there. Have a look. 4D11 points -

Just finished these little lids, they are small. About 2.25" or just less than 60mm in diameter. The gift shop they go to sells loose tea and herbs in bulk. The owner wanted these little lids to dress up 4oz mason jars. Sycamore limbs are ideal for making a natural or live edge knob and the trees are always providing material to work with, always. The natural edge knobs go quickly and it occurred to me to try doing some of the knobs cross grain. Pretty happy this look and anxious to see what Cindy (shop owner) thinks of them.8 points

Overhead door repair
aaronc and 7 others reacted to kmealy for a topic
The theater shop has one overhead door that we use to unload lumber and load up set pieces to take to the theater. We rent the building but repairs are on us. The door is very odd sized, 73" wide and about 7' tall. The lower two sections are getting water damage. So rather than pay $1000+- for a new door (and we might get evicted when the current owner sells the property and re-develops), we (the shop manager and I) re-built the bottom two sections and will install this weekend. Less than $100 in materials, including paint and weather strip. We bought some #1 joist material that was pretty knot free (and could cut around most of what was there). We rip saw out the pith, yielding us some nice quarter- and rift-sawn stock.* Planed down to 1 5/16" to match the upper two sections. Bought a sheet of 1/4" ACX plywood and got to it. Most of the lumber was notoriously warped, but we worked around that. Both the table saw and the miter saw bound up when sawing. The other interesting thing is the plywood was made in 2022. So I guess they don't sell a lot of it because it was near the top of the 12" high stack. Below is the result, waiting for the glue to dry (exterior PVA) * Just as an aside, the ripping a joist is the same process I used to make the frame for the workbench in the photo. #1 rift-sawn knot free SYP is the result.8 points -

@MrRick Oh I see, Maple Ridge, right on the border with USA. I was asking because our son landed in Tacoma Wash yesterday and he loves it already, the change of colors and the feel of Autumn in the air, he's a So CAL kid so seeing trees with fall colors is fun for him, and he said it's cold up there! He plans on visiting BC during one of his leaves from Ft Lewis Wash.7 points -

I spent the morning mowing. We had our second light frost last night so that means the Butternut tree dumped more leaves. It's going to be an easy cleanup year without the mass dumping of all the leaves at once that comes with a hard frost.7 points -

Odds and ends weekend. Taped the cut offs from 2 inch insulation board and made 2 more to fit windows. 5 of 7 now have 4 inches of board in them. Stuff is $40 for a 4x8 sheet, waste isn't an option ya know? Made holder for my zip ties at work. Old vacuum cleaner hard plastic tubing and added two magnets.7 points -

Been steadily moving my boards for some euro mounts towards the finish line. The rustic barn lumber board will have a curly maple shelf for a couple of items of interest. Spent a minute cleaning up all my maple board edges from my jigsaw before I get the router out for them. Yes it's the slow way of doing it but I can do it right there off my bench watching my unsolved mysteries without dragging tools outside.7 points -

NEW ELEMENT ADDED TO THE PERIODIC TABLE: ADMINISTRATIUM Investigators at a major research institution have recently discovered the heaviest element known to science. This startling new discovery has been tentatively named Administratium (Ad). This new element has no protons or electrons, thus having the atomic weight of 0. It does, however, have 1 neutron, 125 assistant neutrons, 75 vice neutrons and 111 assistant vice neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by a force called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons. Since it has no electrons, Administratium is inert. However, it can be detected as it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. According to the discoverers, a minute amount of Administratium causes one reaction to take over four days to complete when it would normally take less than a second. Administratium has a normal half-life of approximately three years; it does not decay but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons, vice neutrons and assistant vice neutrons exchange places. In fact, an Administratium sample's mass will actually increase over time since, with each reorganization, some of the morons inevitably become neutrons, forming new isodopes. This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to speculate that Administratium is formed whenever morons reach a certain quantity in concentration. this hypothetical quantity is referred to as the "Critical Morass". You will know it when you see it.7 points -

Sneaky little buggers

I thunked I had figured out how to get around all the 'leaky bowls' I've been plagued with recently. But NO! These little buggers are crafty. They change colors and layouts and sneak up on you when you're not looking. Here's the latest one to work its evil ways on me. Walnut and poplar. I'm almost scared to try any more for fear of what they may do in the future.7 points -

Display Case Formula
Grandpadave52 and 5 others reacted to Ron Dudelston for a topic
I have been encouraged (drafted) into designing and building a couple of display units for a makers space in our downtown area using standard construction materials that we have on hand. I have built the table and it measures 32” high x 36” wide x 60” long. Time to build the vertical shelving unit. I’m considering a 60 to 72” hutch like display but here is my question. Is there a formula of base depth versus height to maximize the stability? I have built large circular tables and the rule of thumb is that the legs must extend 70% of the top. I.e., a 48” top needs legs that are about 30” wide ( think pedestal base). Any ideas?6 points -

Dowel Storage
4DThinker and 5 others reacted to MrRick for a topic
Gads!! With all the dowels I already had plus all the ones I've been making lately trying different methods of making them, I realized throwing them at one end of my bench isn't cutting it as storage!! What a colossal mess!! So I decided to make storage for different size dowel. Mainly for 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2". Here are the pieces for each storage unit cut up. There will be three. Each storage unit is made up of 1/4" baltic birch plywood as a backer board and three 2" diameter x 1" pieces of scrap pipe. The 1st ring is the bottom. I used 5 minute epoxy to adhere a piece of Baltic Birch on and flush trim routed it. Vertically the 2nd ring is spaced 3" on center to the 1st. The 3rd is spaced 5" from the 2nd. Then I epoxied these on the backer board as shown here. This spacing of the rings allows for different dowel length storage. I can store as small as a 2-1/2" long piece and as long as 36" or longer with these storage units. Here's an overall dimensional view: On the back of each one I made a couple of keyhole slots which enable me to quickly pluck each storage unit off the cabinet if I need to for any reason. Thanks for looking! Feel free to comment, ask questions and " thumbs up " if you like it! Cheers! MrRick6 points -

Smitty, I just went out to the shop and made this cut with that saw blade. Here's a pic. I thing I should mention, my blade is probably 7-8 years old and the company changed hands since I bought this. I was told by a dealer the new owner kept everything the same and even bought the machinery from the former owner to keep making the blades. Anway, probably nothing to worry about but some info I thought you might want to know. To make this cut I used a scrap of QSWO and stood it on edge (clamped to my miter gauge) to make a deeper cut.6 points -
