Popular Post Grandpadave52 Posted August 25 Popular Post Report Posted August 25 Finished all the mowing yet again; it's been a challenging summer to keep up with the yard. Did a little more woodworking aka turning wood into mulch. A little over 1/2 finished replacing front brake pads, calipers, rotors and ABS sensors on granddaughters car. Slow resuming on it this morning since it was 48° to start today. I'll finish that, then change oil/filter, grease front end plus a few other maintenance items today. Errands, weedeating, more mulch making, some much needed outside maintenance as well as lawn equipment maintenance on tap for the week since we're enjoying some early fall like weather. I might even smuggle some donuts onto the premises. HARO50, Gerald, Larry Buskirk and 7 others 5 5 Quote
Popular Post Fred W. Hargis Jr Posted August 25 Popular Post Report Posted August 25 The end of summer draws near, I tilled the corn under last week. The tomatoes, peppers and melons are still producing so they are safe for the moment. It's so dry I don't need to mow but may do so anyway later this week in prep for Labor day. I did get some range time in last week, and hope to do some more shooting this week. In the shop I'm in need of a new TV stand for our bedroom, and I'm tinkering with a different kind of box (if you can call it that) on the lathe. steven newman, Gerald, HARO50 and 6 others 9 Quote

Popular Post HARO50 Posted August 25 Popular Post Report Posted August 25 There will be no lawn mowed around here for a while! The dry-as-a-toot summer has resulted in an over-abundance of yellowjackets, those burrowing little spawns of Satan. Got stung by one about 2 or 3 weeks ago, and I don't really want a repeat of that. The neighbour got stung yesterday, took a blowtorch to them but they're still there. So far I've killed off three nests, but two are still active. The mowing may have to wait until December! Maybe sooner, if I can build a small tactical nuclear device. Gerald, lew, Al B and 5 others 8 Quote

Smack the entrance with a shovel. Run like you are about to have explosive diarrhea! The bees will fly out, see the light and fly towards it- burning off their wings. Popular Post Fred W. Hargis Jr Posted August 25 Popular Post Report Posted August 25 (edited) John, I don't know if they are available in Canada, but those Yellow Jacket traps really work well. I had a nest i couldn't seem to get rid of, I ran over it with the mower and must have got stung 4-5 times. I put up one of these and had it cleared out in about 2 weeks. I used to mark their spot with a flag and go out after dark and pour some flammable liquid in the hole and light it. I gave that up for environmental reasons, but it did kill the nest. Popular Post John Morris Posted August 25 Author Popular Post Report Posted August 25 We've had a horrible Wasp season here in So Cal, they are nesting all over the place in our eaves, the ground the bushes. They are tough as nails too, one was sitting on my garage floor yesterday, I stepped on that sucker three times, the danged thing brushed itself off and flew straight up, looked at me and flew off. Popular Post Bubba Posted August 25 Popular Post Report Posted August 25 I haven't done any woodwork in the shop/garage for some time. It has been just too hot, no AC. But this weekend I had an idea to make something for the house so I broke out the scroll saw. My back bathroom has somewhat of a nautical theme. The shower curtain has a nautilus shell design. . As seen in the picture below there is a large sand dollar framed, as seen in the mirror some flying seagulls and a nautical looking world map. So I wanted to extend the nautical theme to the front bathroom so I made a nautical themed wall hanging. ARG!!! Fred W. Hargis Jr, steven newman, DuckSoup and 6 others 1 7 1 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted August 25 Popular Post Report Posted August 25 Simple Trap: Mountain Dew bottle, leave about 1/2" in the bottom once the trap has been assembled.. Right where the bottle flares out, right above the top of the Label...cut there to remove the top of the bottle Then add the sugar water/Mountain Dew....stuff the top down into the bottle threaded end first... Set the trap out near a nest....let it sit overnight...and it should be FULL of Yellow Jackets..... Dump the trap, build a new one...and let it go to work.... Yellow Jackets can't fly in or out, and once they crawl inside...they land in the water and drown.. Larry Buskirk, HARO50, Al B and 7 others 9 1 Quote
