so, if "Biscuits are for alignment only, and don't add any strength" how are the 50 or so bookcases I've built using only biscuits on the "butt and biscuit joint" still standing 30 years later?

I read an old FWW article by Graham Blackburn who used double biscuits on a set of dining chairs and said his prototypes tested out strong.

Add to the list: using spar urethane for interior projects.

I don't see what the advantage in it is.  It is a "long oil" varnish meaning that the recipe calls for a higher percent of oil and less resin than other varnishes.  It's made to be softer and more flexible.  The only time I saw it used was on a doctor's home desk.  The surface was full of pen impressions.  Go figure.   Some people say that it's more waterproof.  In God I trust; all others bring data.

Reminds me of a book title “In GOD We Trust, All Others Pay Cash”

My quote is from W. Edwards Deming.  He was a leader in quality processes and while for a long time ignored in USA, was a saint in post WW II Japan

Fortunately if you miss any part, it runs 24/7 starting Christmas Eve through Christmas Day. My wife takes the BB gun away from me during this period of time:rolleyes:

Yep, all the US automakers shunned him and his processes until Honda and Toyota buried them using data driven process control, then they embraced the ideas once "they thought of it."

I taught short and long versions of SPC internally for years focusing on X-bar, R charts, P, C, U charts and so on. Called on a lot for certification teams, quality audits, etc. At one time I was a certified and registered  ISO9000 Auditor as well as QS Auditor.

There is the stigma of being an auditor by definition: "an auditor is someone who goes out on the battlefield after the battle has been lost to bayonet the wounded.";) I was given a wall plaque with that after becoming a quality auditor.

A one point my employer was supposedly subscribing to the Deming philosophy.. I was fortunate enough to see and meet him ay one of his seminars in the mid 80s. He was certainly convincing and yet somehow my bosses thought they could change (improve) his approach to fit our needs. It (the change) flopped after a few years.  This was the only time I had ever visited San Diego.
