November 2, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Time to make and attach the rails the tills will ride on. I've decided on two smaller ones instead of one large one. The first thing I need is a measurement for the length, so I just use the project itself. I don't care what this measurement is, the mark taken from the chest itself is all I need. Then, into the vise and cut it to length. I should add that i cut it a bit long, and used the shooting board to sneak up on it.
November 2, 20241 yr Author Popular Post After which, I size the two rails together. I want them the exact same height. You will notice that one of them is a bit short. It was what i had to hand, and the till will slide along that little bit of air just fine. I wanted them the exact same height because I am using a board as a spacer that is sized so that, when I set it in the bottom of the chest and lay the rail on top of it, the rail will be at the exact height I want it's top edge to be, on either side. Shout out to @Gunny. I repaired my old drill, but two drills made this process a heck of a lot easier.
November 2, 20241 yr Author Popular Post For the smaller till that will sit on top I needed to resaw aboard so that the rails for it would be thinner. So, mark my lines...... ....and saw between them.
November 2, 20241 yr Author Popular Post And install. Once again ,thank you for looking at my little project.
November 3, 20241 yr Popular Post Thanks for sharing the update. Progressing nicely. BTW, noticed you turned the heat on in the shop.

Yep, a bit cool that day, with the wind going. We are still unseasonably warm for this time of year, though. I'll take it and be thankful.

November 5, 20241 yr Author Popular Post This being a traditional wooden chest, it incorporates two sliding trays. I built the larger one and will show that process here. The smaller one will be built in the same manner. Firstly though, everything I do is with hand tools. Most of the time I am cutting pieces down from larger stock, which I flatten, square, and size by hand. I have shown some of that in this thread, but we are going to jump ahead a bit and begin by cutting those dimensioned pieces to final length. So I'll mark it.... ...and cut to length.
November 5, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Then it's back on the shooting board to square up the cut. And that process is repeated for the other long side...
November 5, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Then on to marking out for the dovetails. I use the method Paul Sellers teaches, and use the actual pieces and a marking knife and square to do the layout of the shoulders and baseline. After which the dividers come into play.
November 5, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Saw them out... ...get rid of the waste... ....chop it out... ...and fit it up. I did not show marking and cutting the pins, it's the same process.
November 5, 20241 yr Popular Post Enjoy following this build along as well as watching the seasons change in the background. Thanks for taking us along.
November 5, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Ploughing a groove for the tray bottoms, which will be 12 mm luan. Glue up... Assembly Drawer #1 completed. And that is all for this installment. Thanks for looking!
