November 14, 20232 yr Popular Post I’m getting a late start this year but it’s time to make some Christmas presents. First on the block is a movie poster which I am building a frame for. It’s for my daughter. It’s a movie poster for Roger Rabbit that is signed by all the artists involved with the movie. I’m using sapelle and will probably be using a lot of it for the presents this year. I have a ton of scraps left over from making the doors. Paul
November 14, 20232 yr Author Popular Post I used to cut wafers off of a closet rod dowel and then use a forstner bit and glue the wafer over the joint. That works really well for small picture frames. The butterfly method came about with the Shaper Origin. Paul
November 14, 20232 yr Author Popular Post So first coat is on. I had a real shocker this morning. I went to get the matte cut for the poster and they quoted me almost $200. That’s insane. So I decided to make my own out of maple and then paint it glossy black. The poster is 1/4” thick and the matte has to come right up to the edge but not occlude any of the poster because there are signatures right out to the edge. That was part of the issue at the art store. The lady explained they don’t really have the ability to cut matte that accurately???? Paul
November 15, 20232 yr Popular Post Looking good. A youtube video on picture framing came up last week, so I watched it. Then, of course, a bunch more showed up. After watching a few, I decided that I'm probably quite proficient in picture framing. finished a box of 144 sawtooth hangers earlier this year and that didn't count the ones I made before I bought that box nor the ones that I added D-rings and cables to. I probably spent a few hundred bucks on three tools -- a mat cutter, a pin driver and an ATG gun. I probably saved that much money on the first 4 or 5 frames I made. I went to buy a mat board once (usually about $10-12 and the woman pricing it must have bid it at the price they'd charge to cut one -- a bit over $100. And if they cut a 32x40 mat for framing, the whole center would be left for the next mat a bit smaller.
November 15, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Today was spent starting to turn my pile of sapelle scaps into something useful. It’s probably a little obsessive of me but I hate turning the scaps into firewood. The plan is to make some cutting boards, boxes for a few steak knife sets and maybe a few segmented bowls. Down to the wire as usual. Paul
November 22, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Today was back in the shop and back at the presents. I ordered some very nice steak knife sets and am making some cases for them. More of the Sapelle scaps and some SOSS barrel hinges. It looks like I can make one a day if he took is glue up. Paul
November 23, 20232 yr Those are classy Paul. If you have a laser engraver, your logo or some special design on the lid would really set them off. Just my unsolicited opinion.
November 23, 20232 yr Author I agree. The shaper origin will do the same thing so I have been toying with that idea. I Paul

November 24, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Well ….. I finished the first one and it came out great except for that one little itty bitty thing. Why is it always the last step that gets you ?? I forgot that SOSS barrel hinges require they be mortised in 5/8” deep. That limits the radius one can router the edge to. Oops. Upon sanding it exposed the hinges. I guess we will call this one a prototype 🤨 Paul
