June 14, 20233 yr Author Popular Post One hour in the shop....had to build a "Prototype". Open up the box.. "parts is parts"? I cut a bit of scrap to match the Tray ends...Drilled one of those "Tongue Depressor" looking things at each end...took a few tries to get things just right...but 4th try...goal being that the top tray will lift up and out.....yet, close up on top of the lower trays.... And still allow the lid to close up.. Even forms a dust seal? Will replace the screws with so-called "Sex Bolts" Will have to get the correct length later this week..first, I need to BUILD a tray.. Have the 4 sides all set out..then a few tools.. Decided to just use the 1/4" chisel...both for lay-outs and to remove the waste...the little saw seemed to work best IF I rub the blade with a bit of candle wax... Then the chisel took over...and then a dry fit... Had to get things ready to take GrandBRAT back home, so this was as far as I got....1 corner done, three more to go.. Stay tuned..

June 16, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Took two trips to the shop, today...one for Corner #3 and then for Corner #4... Dry fit? Getting a few clamps pre-set... One source of trouble...the smaller saw was just too flimsy...and more suited to cross cut work...the Disston No. 68 is made for rip cuts...white streaks are from candle wax.. Checked the corners for square...then dug out a panel of 1/4" thick plywood... Made a few marks around the tray...will finish that layout with a framing square... Back says I am done for the day... Stay tuned..
June 16, 20233 yr Author Popular Post So...a slip fit divider needs made up, BEFORE a glue up can happen? Cut to length.. Then some lay-out lines.. Then bandsaw, splitting the lines..then A chisel to pop the waste out..test the fit.. Hmm, a bit tight of a fit? This is as far as the mallet come drive things together.....we have ways... had to reset the clamp, once..dividers are 2" tall...this joint makes a nice 90 degree result.. No slop allowed..test fit into the tray.. Just a slip fit...time for glue, glue brush, cauls and clamps.. No glue on the dividers..the plywood is there to keep glue off of my bench..8 cauls....and 8 clamps Divider also keeps the side of the tray from bowing in from the clamp pressure Checking corners for square. Will let this mess sit a while... Stay tuned..
June 18, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Out of those clamps. . Corners cleaned up... Cut a plywood panel for the bottom...Remove the divider,,glue, glue brush & Clamps...and a couple cauls that span the top edges.. Stow the divider on top and set aside, for now.. Drill some counter-bored holes... And make sure the bolts work... Short one for the tray...Longer one goes through the side of the box.. May paint it black? Or leave as is? Cut 8 parts for the 2 lower trays.. They will look like this... Will add a divider in the middle? or. just a handle to lift these out? We'll see Stay tuned..
June 19, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Spent almost an hour, yesterday...trying to get the tray to work just right.....some of the holes are now slots...and a couple washers were added here and there... Along the front of the tray...I had to make a "relief" bevel...also had to notch the divider.. To allow clearance for the heads of the bolts And....the lid will still shut and latch just fine... And..when the lower trays are installed(have to make them, first) The tray does sit level. Which leaves 2 trays yet to be built..a fancy one.. As for the second one? Plywood bottom, rather plain looking...will be out of sight UNLESS you should remove the fancy one...and then slide the Secret Tray forward...otherwise, it will stay hidden, along with anything you care to hide... First up...the Fancy tray needs the corners joined...might go back to Through Dovetails? Might need a handle of some sort, to help lift it out...we'll see Stay tuned..
June 21, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Just laid out and milled the second corner of this Fancy Tray... Couldn't find my usual mallet...so.. Still works just fine..."wide" chisel is 1/4", narrow one is 1/8" Sash Mortise... Also cut a length of "Black Chain".. To keep the lid from falling too far backwards. . 2 corners done..2 to go...plus a divider/handle. Stay tuned..
June 22, 20233 yr Author Corner #3 done...corner #4 about to begin? Chisel selection? Yes, Lew...I am using a certain Mallet for these.. Found a mirror today @ Hobby Lobby.....and a selection of handles.. Handles were a bit too small...so...about a mile to the west was a Menard's store.. These might work a bit better? On the way to the Check-outs..pass a display that proclaimed "SALE!" Could not resist.. Current saw blade in my 8" tablesaw is 8-1/4" and cost about $30.....this one is 8-1/2" and will fit the saw....and was just under $12? Hmmm..we'll see how it works out. Laundry Detail this evening...might see if Corner #4 can be done in the same amount of time as Corner #3...30 minutes.. Stay tuned..

Was in our local Menards yesterday. Based on your "recommendation" I couldn't resist either. Looked all over the tool section, but couldn't find them. After a quick trip to the restroom, I decided to check-out. Just like you, saw them on the end of a gondola close to the check-out. They only had 3 of the 8-1/2" left. 8-1/2" are hard to find locally. I bought two. Also picked up a 10". Same price as were the 12". Look to be narrow kerf too. Cheaper than a re-sharpen. Definitely way better than a dull blade. We'll see shan't we?
June 27, 20233 yr Author Corner #4 was done...might as well glue it up.. Spacer bar to prevent any bowing in, from the clamps... Brass handles have a paint job going on.. Trying to match up to the rest of the hardware... Clamps came off today...corners squared up...cleaned up......then this will be glued in place... Currently processing a photo... Have to wait a while, before the clamps can be removed, again...then rip off the excess height, to match the Fancy Tray. Then add a handle or 2 to the secret tray..Then, figure out HOW to glue a mirror to the underside of the lid. Maybe by this coming weekend, I can add a finish? Stay tuned..
June 27, 20233 yr Author Will need a bit of clean up, later.. Cauls to help keep the clamps from just sliding back off... Bottom panel will need trimmed to match the sides of the tray.... We have ways....stay tuned...
