May 31, 20233 yr Popular Post So...sorted through the Left-overs, again... have these to use up (or burn) plus a plank.. That had a split on the end.. So..got the tablesaw out..chopped the plank down to lengths I can better us....which still left.. Problem to deal with...set up the rip fence...to just skim along the split...then ran most of the other wide parts through.. Kept some of the better looking cut-offs.. And some of the strips.. Which will make a collar for the Raised panel lid.. The strip on top? Is not quite as wide as the other four...but, I do have a use for it.. Need to joint a few edges, and glue this up into a panel for the lid.. Box? Will see how the lid turns out, the size this to match the collar... Corner Joints? Will be a form of Dovetails.. That when properly fitted... Yeah, yeah...I could TRY the mitered version...last time, that didn't end well....these seem to be better....even Chris Schwarz uses them.... Stay tuned...
May 31, 20233 yr Popular Post All aboard. Next stop Dungeon Junction. Arrival time mid June unless we run short on steam. Here's my nickel, albeit wooden. Hope to get a window seat.
June 1, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Task to be completed.... Trim the lid parts to rough size... Try to line up a grain match...panel is a bit too thick for a lid.....Tablesaw to cut a deep kerf around the 2 wide parts...center was just narrow enough to allow one pass.....wide parts were then finished up with a handsaw... Then planed flat... Same plane also jointed all the edges.....then, spread a bit of glue... Vise lending a helping hand...and acting as a caul...double cauls at the top...check for any gaps... I also trimmed the Box sides and the collar parts to rough length..and squared up the ends... Letting the panel stay in the clamps...may return later today... Stay tuned..
June 1, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Killing time in the shop, this morning.... Panel is out of the clamps....cleaned up, flattened, and squared up....which leaves... Making it into a raised panel... Has a small detail around the "field".... I also got 2 corners dry fitted for the collar to house this panel.. No glue nor any clamps? Look at the inside of the lap joints... PITA to do....but works...will wait until things cool down ( 84 degrees, right now) before I try again in the shop....might get the other 2 done? Need to plough the grooves to house the panel in.... Not much of a tool kit, today.... Stay tuned
June 1, 20233 yr Popular Post Chad Stanton (of Wood Choppin' Time) did a presentation for the club a few years ago. His traveling tool box he had made with mitered dovetails. He said never again.
June 2, 20233 yr Author Worked for a little while this evening... Dovetail saw only cuts so far....drive the kerf chisel the rest of the way... Then the chisels can take it from here... Corner #3 is done....kept on going until... #4 is done..dry fit done...check to see if the panel is the right size... Will be close....can adjust...with how deep the grooves will go.. Stay tuned...
June 2, 20233 yr Popular Post Wish I had your scrap pile. Getting good hardwoods is either an online order or a 80 mile (40 there and back) trip. Some common local hardwoods are available but for a shrink wrapped high markup price. How to do half blind mitered dovetails was a request from a student many years back taking my CNC furniture class. I originally told the kid It would be impossible to do those using a CNC, but after sleeping on it (my usual path to clever solutions) I did come up with a way. Took mounting the boards at 45 degrees from vertical, and some brain sucking contemplation to draw up the toolpaths, but the student was happy with the results. The photo above is just a sample I did to show the students. He used this joint on the corner edges of his walnut desk. 4D
June 4, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Grooves, then a glue-up, today? Dry fit... Stanley #45. These parts are a bit tricky to jig into place.. but,had other issues.. This dry fit showed a few issues to deal with... Like maybe the panel was a bit too long? fixed that issue...try again.. Look at the bottom 2 joints...with the clamps as tight as I could get...Millers Falls No. 11 to skim a bit off each edge..try again... Brush some glue around..clamp up...check for square... Pull until it is square. Lots of Crunchies on the floor... Busy day? Letting the lid sit a day...will try to start on the box..maybe tomorrow? Stay tuned...
June 5, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Spent over an hour Sunday...cleaning up the lid, once it was out of the clamps.....oh, it was indeed square,,, except it was also twisted....worked on the top and bottom of the lid, so it would lay flat on the bench... Left it here, for now....needed to check the 4 sides of the box, to see how they all matched to size of the lid.. Of course, they all needed a trim....was trying to match up the grain patterns, too... Finally got all 4 cut for length....and even jointed one edge...will do the other edge later... By this time, I was soaked clear through..and the Get-up & Go....had got up and went...figured this will do, for a Sunday...
June 5, 20233 yr Author Popular Post 2 hours IN the shop...on a Monday? Mainly to do some layout work, escalated from there...The long sides needed a rebate on each end... Like this...needed to match the grain and mark which edge goes where,,, Marks to show the outside of the box, and top of the box. other long side uses a different mark....I also marked the ends.. Inside/outside...which edge goes to the lid.... Lots of marking going on..finally got to where some saw and chisel work could be done.. Includes a Kerf Chisel. Pins or Tails first? Used these to trace around with a sharp pencil, more saw work, and then chisels... Almost time for a dry fit? The c clamp? Had a chip come off...and is now under repair... Not too hateful? Decided that 2 hrs in the shop on a Monday, was pushing things...so Hang up the shop apron, grab the camera and Mountain Dew Zero..and close up the shop.. Stay Tuned..
June 6, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Tuesday...Corner #2.. Layouts attempted.. Lines sawn... Saw Kerf chisel to go where no saw has been.. Yes, it is a putty knife...that just so happens to match the width of the saw's kerf...driven down into the back corners..SLOWLY, to avoid things doing the splits Then the chisels get to work... One of the chisels in use....someone long ago had taken an old Triangular File...and ground a bevel on the end...think Mortise Chisel bevel...Works great getting into all the corners.. Use these to trace around...then back to the Gents saw... Have to be careful of them "over-cuts", as these will show....Kerf chisel wanted to try to be a splitting maul..went with just chisels this time.. Blue handle is a Stanley chisel, using a dog hole as a holder..keeps it from rolling off the bench,,, Dry fits? Not too hateful? See how it matches up to the lid, so far.. Clamped to the lid...grain match? Might just be the front of this toolbox-to-be..... 2 done, 2 to go... Stay tuned..
June 8, 20233 yr Author Popular Post All four corners are done. So..today was a "Groovy Day"...need to joint a few boards, first.. They were a bit rough along the edges...so.. And made sure all 4 sides matched in width.. Makes the grooves easier to align...Jig #1 Was a bit too "squirrelly" also, wanted to test a different plane.. Iron wasn't quite sharp enough..was a bit too bit for this work, and.. NO depth stop...back to "old reliable" Tends to "bloom" when going good...Candle wax along the groove helps out.. And..this is only half of the Krunchies, today... Needed a bigger jig for the long sides, so.. Check to see how the grooves line up.. Why it is important to joint all the bottom edges the same...Test out the plywood bottom.. See IF the lid still fits.. Might as well glue the box up? Checking for square... Adjust as needed..Let this sit a day or two..time for a Tonic & Gin..? Thinking of building some trays for this, so.. These should do the trick.. Stay tuned..
June 10, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Box is out of the clamps...needs to be matched up with the lid... High spots need to go elsewhere...Used a Stanley No. 7c to level out the gaps A No. 4 plane to clean up the ends a bit.. Then work on both the lid and the box at the same time.. Smoothed, flat and... All the way around...checking for gaps, again.. Look a little better?time to get some Hardware set out.. BTW, that #4 hand plane? Was sold by Van Camp....it did make a mess on the floor... Yet I never had the slightest bit of tear out.... Stay tuned...
June 11, 20233 yr Author Most of today's shop time was taken up by removing the old Washing Machine...buying NEW hoses for this.. A tad smaller...less things to go wrong...had to re-hang a Power Strip.. Goes to the shop fan, and the drill press..and the new washer...it does have a breaker..and, there is a GFCI outlet that the strip is plugged into Red does stand for Hot Water, right...? Later today..I'll dig some small wood screws out of a tray.. And install hinges and a latch. The screwdriver is a Phillips......Brass "tube" is an automatic center punch...will be using 1/16" drill bit for the pilot holes... Stay tuned..
