May 16, 20233 yr Fantastic 4D. I agree legs could use a little extra detail. Perhaps a groove (radius bottom) around the perimeter on the sides inset about 1/4"???? As I know you would, do it in the drafting file program to take a look first. Maybe parallel grooves down the outside also or only??? I'm designed impared though so consider that first.
May 16, 20233 yr Author Thanks Gpdave52. The top of the top has a shallow V-groove inset 1/2" from the chamfered edge. A similar detail on the legs might be the best addition. I can do the chamfer easily. The inset groove becomes more of a challenge on curved shapes. Thinking about a shallow arc on the front of the foot to parallel the round post. Iteration time. 4D
May 16, 20233 yr @4DThinker I agree about the legs. The top and post have artistic lines but the legs seem less so.
May 16, 20233 yr I’d probably do more of a taper along the length and thickness from dovetails to foot, if that makes sense.
May 16, 20233 yr Author It makes sense, but isn't the simplest of challenges. As I study the photos I took another thought comes to me. The post was the stimulus and remains the focal point of the composition. A simpler round top, perhaps with the same chamfers but not 9-sided, and only some simple chamfered edges and maybe a slight taper on the legs would keep the legs and top from distracting from the post. If I'd made the post center 9-sided then the 9 sided top may have made more sense. Detail continuity is something I preached to my students. The table with a fancy top that doesn't echo any detail of the fancy post leaves detail on the legs open to any random thing. I can cut another top. I may use the 9-sided top on a taller table I make with a center post that has 9 sides, or 9 flutes. 9 facets where the legs attach to every 3rd one. 4D Edited May 16, 20233 yr by 4DThinker
May 17, 20233 yr Author Thanks Paul, The design is still under review. An initial prototype that had to be built so I could see what could be improved. The post will remain, but the design of the top and legs is up in the air still. 4D
May 17, 20233 yr Author Round top rendering. Simpler form to echo the simpler round forms on the post rather than distract from it. I'll likely just round over the sharp edges of the legs as well, with maybe a detail groove inset from the edges. I used an ellipse section to shape/thin the bottom. 4D.
May 17, 20233 yr After seeing the proposed alteration, I tend to agree, the round top will further enhance the pedestal and leg design. Now, your next project will be to design a pedestal and leg set to enhance the 9-sided top. Gonna be a busy summer 4D. Better stock up on some donuts.

Spent an hour this morning tracking down and taking care of the apparent unlevel tops of my bed bridges. Made from fairly uniform thick BB plywood and resting on the bed frame I assumed the bridge tops would be parallel to the cutting plane. I can only conclude that the gantry bridge is slightly lower on the right than on the left side. Another minor flaw in the design/assembly of my older Probotix Meteor. I Let the CNC plane the bridge tops and recut the track slots so all would be in plane with the cutting plane. Hunting for some lunch now but will likely cut the round top out after lunch today. 4D
May 17, 20233 yr I'm still learning the finer points of Sketchup. Thinking something like this with softer edges might carry the circular element through to the bottom.
May 17, 20233 yr Author Looks like your sketchup skills aren't too bad Lew. Assuming that's a leg design suggestion, the legs have to be 10.5" tall and stand out 7.25" from the post. 3/8" depth and 2.25" height for the dovetail connection. A separate foot on the end adds to the complexity of the build which I could handle but want to avoid in this project. I want to draw focus to the post rather than distract with great looking feet. Same reason I'm simplifying the top. 4D

May 17, 20233 yr Author Round top is on my CNC right now being cut. The moulding toolpath for the bottom appears to have benefitted by the levelling of the bed bridges it sits on. Depth looks even on all sides.. Still pondering what to do with the legs. I'll put the round top on the base when it is done and see what the composition needs. 4D
May 18, 20233 yr Author Well it looks like Saturday before I can finish the top. I wanted a 3/16" roundover edge on the top. I would have had the CNC cut it but as this was 2-sided job I could tell that the moulding elliptical toolpath on the back would meet up with the roundover and free the board before I would be done. I was sure I had a 3/16" roundover bit among my collection and in fact checked my Amazon history and there was my order for one more than a year ago. No sign of that bit in all the hiding places I keep router bits in so I ordered a new one and it'll show up Saturday. Bottom surface looks good and even. Made a mess of fine oak dust around the CNC though so at least I have something to do..... clean up the mess. 4D
