0.625*24=15 sq inches of material before cutting.

square root of 15 = 3.873, just under 3-7/8"

so ideally, you'd have a square of just under 3-7/8"

That was a clever way to start!

This is not, in this case, a 'thank you', although it can also very well be a thank you.

Woodman believes the emoticon labels should be removed.

It is (in this case) an award trophy for best, and, I believe, the right answer. :Praise:

in a perfect world, there is no sawdust or kerfs.....

i worked backwards....he wants a square...ok, that defines one aspect of the problem.  so how much material do we have to work with?  go from there.

like any other project, if you want a certain size piece, say a cutting board, or table top, you know what you want at the end, so you have to have at least that much when you start, and if you will be cutting things, you have to allow for the kerfs (normally 1/8").  same way you figure how many board feet to buy to make sure you have enough material to make your project.  never want to run short.  and the less finished the wood is, the more extra you have to estimate to allow for bad spots you want to cut around later.

ahem....those are design change opportunities!!!!

Is it a solid square or like a picture frame. For a picture frame cut 2 at 6-5/8 and 2 at 5-3/8. That will give you a 6-5/8 square.

what about mitered corners?

i could get a mitered frame 6" on a side...

There is a (somewhat) famous story about the teacher who posed a problem: You have a board 48" long, if you cut it into 8 pieces how long will each piece be?  The son of a cabinetmaker had to argue with her that each piece would not be a full 6 inches.

Do I get extra points for using common core math?

But "proof by induction" was in my very first theoretical math class, partial differential equations.

The corners are not mitered.

Now that I might have figured out. They covered simple divifiction in 4th grade. I loved fourth grade. The teacher was so nice. she used to hug the stuffing out of me. Yeah, 4th grade. Best two years of my life.

I had a course in thermodynamics.

The three laws of thermodynamics.

  1.  You can't win
  2.  You can't break even
  3.  You cannot get out of the game.

Reminds me of some reviews I read last week of a nearby casino.  People complained that they lost money.  One person had lost $4000!   I had a course in Game Theory, too.  I never gamble.   And I chuckle when I hear, "The casino's revenue last year was $684 million."  In other words, that's how much gamblers lost (less what they might have paid for food and drinks).   A few years back, I did a lot of work for a casino, mostly touching up furniture in the hotel.  But once I spent a few days in the "high roller's lounge."   I had to pass thru security, and every day, the same guy was there in a wheelchair with an oxygen tank and nose vent.  I kept thinking, "Is this the best way you have to spend the last days of your life???"

old story from Mob era Vegas:

guy is being shown the then grand and new Caeser's Palace.  great looking place, nice fountains.....blah, blah, blah....and the owner, who is showing the guy around accepts all the nice compliments and then pauses.....and tells the guy, "remember, winner's money didn't pay for all this".

Yes! My thanks, and a view of a finished item.

Using x = √ (width x length), the DAB Formula to Maximize Area With Limited Stock, this was my first effort. With of squaring off the inaccurcies of my first effort, a neat finished product emerged. Jimbo see's $20 at the crafts table  :cowboy: and a big smile when I let it go for $10. :BattingEyelashes:

Stoners handle the boxes ... but even at $10, they'd rather buy cannabusted.

The featured tray? GF / partner of a WOODWORKER bought the box  Right in front of him.  And the guy reclaims wood from old houses, spotted old growth wood from paces away, works with it all of the time. We had a great talk, however. He "got a lot of ideas" and seemed surprised square root has a place in woodworking. As was I.  x = √ (width x length)

Thanks, Doc.  Inventory is sketchy at the moment; I gifted 6-7 trays L-Day Weekend to performers and fellow volunteers at a BG Festival where I worked 'backstage security' So this past Saturday was a bust.  One at 50% off, another gifted to nun. But the gals do like handling them, and that is good enough for me. Some seem to particularly enjoy bending down over the table. Hmmmm. Others are more modest.  But all like talking. They seem interested in how the burr works. Sandpaper vs scraping. I demonstrate many times a morning. Compare the burr to a knife's edge.

Sales? Who needs'em. Heck, I'm super popular with the 5-6 year olds. Kids trash the display while daddy takes a breather. Stacking, balancing, organizing, arranging. The dancing cat playing violin was sucking up loose daddy-bucks, though.
