Friday July 8th 2022-What's on Your Weekend Agenda?

Friday again folks. :D

Here "Two Weeks From Anywhere" I'm getting prepared to go to the land of "Three Weeks From Anywhere".

Hope I'm not going into a real mess, as I'll be going to finish a well pump installation that was started by someone else that decided not to finish the job. <_<

I know the person that started the job, and when I was an Apprentice Pipe-Fitter had them as a Journeyman.

The other Journeymen would joke asking him "Who's the apprentice?"  Not so sure if they were joking or not. :WonderScratch:

 Have that strange feeling I'll have to re-do what has already been done so it will pass inspection.

So with all that,

What's on Your Weekend Agenda?

Now that the shop is as organized as it's gonna get and, the scroll saw is operational, it's  time to get back to the Limbert tabIe build.

Need to band saw an mdf pattern for the router to insure all the legs are the same. So that, after 12 legs are made, they are interchangeable.

Got a pretty good start on the "turn out" board for the spanakopita pie. Glued up sections and surfaced down to the desired thickness. The overall width is larger than the planer can handle. Need to size them and do the final assembly.

As @steven newman would say- film at 11 :)

Had to look up Spanakopita Pie. :WonderScratch:

Popeye would enjoy, and so would I. ;)

Once the rain moves through today, finish up the mowing tomorrow. Shouldn't have to worry now about hitting a rock, creating a spark then starting a prairie fire.

May get some non-mechanical garage time in for a change. We'll see. Plenty of outdoor projects to choose from as well. Normal church responsibilities Sunday.

Whatever all y'all are doing, be safe. Wear appropriate PPE while in the shop and think through your operation before performing the actual work. Remember, accidents are always looking for a place to happen.

On the list for this weekend is continuing work on the split top Rubou interspersed with a non-trivial amount of sharpening.

It is Mimi's favorite. I'm not sure what it tastes like- it's gone before I can get to it!

Had a bit of knee swelling and pain this morning so taking a day slow. Put off the ranch water line finish as son didn't want to go out either. still have hopes to finish that soon , but who knows maybe just let him have it to himself. Naw wouldn't do that.

Got several bowls to decide on what finish to put on plus some more unfinished projects to looks at again

Same here. My fav plane has been disassembled for weeks, waiting for me to lay out the gear. They all four want it. And the scrapers.

A new Oshlun 10" 40T thin kerf "Ultimate" blade arrived today. I've got a particular slab I want resawn into 1/8" slats. Definitely setting up the Big Boy saw for that. Plank too long so I'll get a few 1/4" crosscuts for more little matching-grain trays. Dang, is it sharp. Now I want my 60T back to factory new. May consult with Danl's recommendation.

Tomorrow mortise keyhole hangers arrive. The live-edge black walnut shelf is almost finished. Two hangers will go into the shelf edge 16" off-center. TAPE the underside (yes, I will use that modern time saver) and Titebond the brackets. Then two careful pre-drilled counterbored screws per bracket into the shelf, for luck. Thinking of gluing 1/16" cork sheet to the brackets at wall contact. Here's the underside:

Well the non-trivial sharpening is done.

Took a black marker to all the new Narex chisels to see what i was working with… the results were not pretty.

Starting with 400 grit, flattened all the backs and progressively polished to 4000.  That took most of the effort.

After that set a primary bevel with the Tormek at 25* and the secondary at 30* for each chisel.

My limited experience with these chisels has taught me that the steel is too brittle for 25* but 30* seems to be a good compromise.

Polished the secondary up to 4000 and stropped with polishing compound which should be about 6000 give or take.

These things will take a ridiculously sharp edge, now let’s see how long they will keep it.

If The Man had your help, the heavens and earth would have been completed in FOUR days. And we'd have THREE days of rest!

Larry, and @lew - you don't know what you are missing!  Spanakopita and Pastitsio are two of my favorite Greek dishes. :)

I've been doing a bit of yard work and preparing for a trip up to O-HI-O land next week.  Temps have moderated somewhat - into the mid to upper 90's but the humidity has been higher resulting in heat index numbers in the 105* or above range.  We've also been getting a few afternoon/evening thunderstorms.  That means jump out early and get yard work done before noon.  While gathering up a bunch of stuff (a small trailer load) to take to Ohio I made a list of stuff that I feel it is time to part with when I get back - various tools, timbers, and just misc. stuff that has filled up two garages and four sheds over the years.  I will list some on Craigslist/Marketplace and likely carry another couple loads to the auction...

In between other projects today, got started on a joiners mallet I have been meaning to make for a minute.

Handle is done and the blank for the head is glued up. Have some work to do tomorrow to shape it and get the hole drilled for the handle but things are progressing nicely.

As a side note, turning stuff is a whole lot easier with really sharp chisels.

Not too much for woodworking Gunny, I really thinned that stuff out with a bunch to Ohio.

Looks like this years thinning will be a lot of mechanics tools.  Engine hoist, 30 ton press, larger sockets & wrenches I've not used in over 40 years!  A few air tools...
