July 11, 20224 yr Popular Post I have a 45 but hardly ever use it. Learned when I was about to give up on it don't start with a full cut. Start at the end of the cut and gradually move back toward a full length. Maybe Steven will correct me if wrong.
July 11, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Bevels for a Monday? Spent 45 minutes, then stopped for Lunch.. One was fairly easy to do.. Just match the existing..so the lid will sit down flat...the other bevel for today.. Where the lid joins to the top...need to match that lower bevel... Needed to use the tool well for something besides tools and shavings... Kept checking the bevel...until it matched the bevel gauge....had to joint the other edge straight, and remove a taper...THEN glue and clamps.. Lots of clamps....let this sit a day...have done enough, for a Monday...best not to press me luck Stay tuned..

July 11, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Secret to the Stanley 45......take as shallow of a cut as you can to start up a cut....can always deepen the depth of the cutter, IF you are in a hurry... Be sure to wax the fence and the skates....sometimes, after the groove has been started, I' ll add a bit of candle wax in the groove....makes things slide a LOT better. Just take as shallow a cut as you can...can always deepen the cutter...I rarely do.. Need to dig the tablesaw back out... It is in there...somewhere...
July 13, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Out of one set of clamps. . and get ready for the next set...needed 2 bevels made...this one for the top... Easier to do it now, than after the top is glued into place.. Once the bevels match...I can flip this board over. and joint the back edge, where it will get glued to the back of the desk... I also needed to plane a bevel onto the front, where the lid will rest when closed up... Will clean up all glue joints, when I am done.. Let this sit a day Stay tuned...

July 14, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Ok, out of the clamps, again....clean and level the glue joints.. Trying to get the top to look like a single board.. Dovetail joints look a bit better, too...checked the lid to see about length..and if the ends were square...usual...one wasn't, we have ways.. Bit of scrap to stop any blow out on the exit...was a nice try.. ( more on that later) Underside needed to be flatter...MUCH flatter...No.8c to do that chore Lid then needed a bevel planed along one edge,,,to match up with the bevel in the top..so No.8c to get close, No. 3 to fine tune the fit... Getting there.... Thought about adding these... But...should have just surface mounted them, instead of trying to mortise them in place.....would have saved a LOT of Lets see....hinges needed flattened out.... but NOT bent.....Mortises were chopped..but..the lid wound up going on upside down?, then the pilot holes for the screws, were stripping out in the spalted wood.....and NOTHING was lining up right...spent the day thinking this over... Returned to the shop...threw out the bent hinges, laid the lid in place the correct way...dug out another pair of hinges, and surface mounted them.. About this time, that split out..split.....didn't want to just glue it back in place..wasn't in the mood....took the planes to the edge..and leveled things out..and over... Then stood the desk up on it's back, and finished the round-over...(split out is at the far end) And...called it a night. Those hinges are "Stand-ins" for now...need to go out and BUY surface mount hinges.... Stay tuned...
July 14, 20224 yr Popular Post Beautiful grain on this...sorry the day took twists and turns...sounds like you had a Dave's Day...those are the worst.

July 15, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Let's see..a PIP is in order... With the new hinges installed... A latch has been installed... Nice part of taking a lot of photos...defects can't hide ( went back and tightened THAT screw down) Open the lid... Space in the center fits a yellow Legal Pad. Places for pens, pencils, 3 x 5 cards....whatever... Has since been given a second coat of Witch's Brew Stain, a seal coat of Amber Shellac....been rubbed down with 0000 steel wool...and is currently waiting on a coat of... this to dry, before it gets rubbed down again....may, or may not add small handle to the sides...we'll see Almost done..
July 15, 20224 yr Great choices for the hinges and latch. Nice touch adding the book ledge stop. Turned out mighty nice.

Or dig up a basic paraffin candle from the emergency supplies box. But probably the tin of wax; I am going to do the C.I. table saw deck and fence too. Doing the sockets by router gives a nice crisp line to trace for the dovetail. Is that part of the reason you do it that way?

July 15, 20224 yr Popular Post No JPW to be found here, either. Had to settle for Tre Wax. Used mostly for tool rables, these days. When I'm back to building boxes, it'll get used then, too. I like to apply it vigorously to the wood with Liberon steel wool. Edited July 15, 20224 yr by Gene Howe
July 15, 20224 yr Author I just use a plain candle.....one could also just buy a block of Parafin wax to use. I find it easier to router the sockets, then do them by hand.....
July 16, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Varnish is dry, inside and out...rubbed down a bit... Olde school Notepad? Open the lid, and stow the notepad away.. Close and latch the lid... On the way around in back, stop by for a look at the end....and The backside....as for the underside.. yes, it also got a bit of finish... I think I can call this done?
July 16, 20224 yr Popular Post Your done with that, which looks very good, now what about the rest of July?
July 16, 20224 yr Popular Post Very nice! I'll second Lew's dove tail comment. Nice, interior lay out, too.
July 16, 20224 yr Thanks for sharing the build. Another Bandit classic. BTW, it ain't done til you "bandit brand-it".
