July 5, 20223 yr Popular Post Had 3 planks IN the shop....decided to trim them down to size... Cut the bad, Barky board down a bit..from both ends.. Which left.. This much "good" wood...not keeping the barky stuff.. Set this aside, for a moment...the other 2 planks had some spalting going on...cross cut to get the most..and set the rest aside.. All 3 now needed the rip fence set up...to dress up both edges....The 2 plain jane sections also were edged.. Along with a few scraps from the last Project.. So, MAYBE a Lap Desk in there, somewhere? Have a parts list of pieces to choose from...depends on how fancy to make the lid/writing surface... Well, it IS a start....just that amount of milling..and the toes started to cramp up...while I am on Laundry Detail, this evening... Stay tuned..
July 6, 20223 yr Author Popular Post A choice was made, this evening....to thin these boards down to 5/8" thickness.....the "easy" part was to set up the Kerf Kutter Saw.. Saw blade all the way up. ~5/8" between the blade and the fence....run all edges through....however...2 did not get thinned down, and 2 were narrow enough that a pass along both long edge was enough....the last 4 are 5" or wider...all 4 edges were sawn...still left about 1" along the centerline..made a big mess, too.. Can't trust the bandsaw to do the final cut..so....we have ways.. A Disston Rip saw. 5-1/2 ppi, 28" length..the "8" is inside of the "D" on the very readable etch. Blue clamp to keep the board from just tipping over....saw down just over halfway... Let the saw just follow that kerf....then rotate end for end... Have to watch out, that last stroke of the saw can get away from you...I have a few sore fingers that hit the board Results? Measured the thickness...right at 5/8" thick...a few swipes with a plane, good to go...this do make a mess.. Swept the shop, hauled the Clothes Hamper back upstairs....called it a night....kind of sore and crampy, for some reason.. 1 done, 3 to go....then plane them all smooth...more Cardio Workouts Stay tuned...
July 7, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Despite the Creek.. Time to get sawing, again...had to change things up a bit...boards were a bit too short for the leg vise to hold on to...so.. Used the end vise, instead...when a cut was done, the off-cut simply dropped out of the way..LOTS of sawdust, today.. You can see where the 2 cuts met up, too....used a stop line.. To let me know when I was close to the end of the cut...results of the cut? Set most of the re-sawn parts aside, for now.. And work on 2 boards to make the lid's panel...which needed planed... Will be the inside of the lid...worry about smooth later....then edges were jointed.. Then edges were lined up...and a cut line made on the longer of the 2... Then a very different Disston D-8 was used.. 20" long, 10 ppi, Panel saw...does a decent job, too.. Then some glue, cauls and clamps.. End vise makes a very good caul...BTW..will let this sit a day, or two... While I figure out the rest of the parts' sizes...and get rid of a Migraine... Stay tuned..
July 7, 20223 yr Author Popular Post TIA last night....laid out one side of the Desk, eyes were acting up...let everything sit until this morning...TIA ( "Mini-Stroke") was gone. So... Sides were cut to length...can't use the tablesaw, at the moment....so... We have ways...then rough cut on the bandsaw... Very ROUGH cuts...and this is the cut-off....means a plane was needed next...cleaned up the saw marks, straighten an edge or 4...and then the faces were worked over...( I did remember to turn the shop fan ON) That is one way to do this sort of thing...results? Repeat this 3 more times. Top and Front of the Desk...were planed flat.. Then one needed trimmed for square, and both needed cut to length....that old Stanley No. 358 was getting a work-out (me too, BTW) Lid: came out of the clamps...had to, to get a few lengths measured...Glue joints were cleaned up.. Trying to decide whether to show off this face, or.. This face...Hmmm.. Which left the back of the Desk.....back to the Mitre Box to cut for length...set it in a corner.. Corner details....still have to plane the back piece FLAT...But... Parts is parts Get-up & Go had about gone away, for the day...was a bit busy.. Swept this mess up...called it a day...was soaked clear through, despite the fan...as for not using the tablesaw? It IS back there...somewhere...along with 3 other Mitre Boxes... Stay tuned... ....

July 9, 20223 yr Author Popular Post 2-parter, today....Part 1 coming up The Before.. Will be the back of the Desk....That Junior Jack back there has work to do.. Almost done....then, measured how much to peel off an edge,,,, Just a little off the top? We have ways... Next task involve a Socket Maker... That fence got moved around, quite a bit....finally.. And that will do for Part 1 Stay tuned
July 9, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Part 2? Lay out work, again.. Trace around in the sockets, finesse with the Bevel gauge...Square had one more use.. Guide for a Knife Wall. Bandsaw to cut on the waste side, leaving the lines Chop on the outside face, first. about 1/2 way down....flip the board over.. And chop down from the inside face....dry fit? Took a couple...2 sockets were not deep enough Repeat for the other end... Again with the sockets not quite deep enough? Better than being TOO deep, I guess...was getting a bit sore.. Will save this for the next time in the shop.....set the rest of the parts where I can find them...added 2 clamps... Gives some idea of what this will look like? Stay tuned..
July 9, 20223 yr Popular Post It will surely be beautiful Steven, but I have to ask how heavy it is getting?
July 9, 20223 yr Author Popular Post The wood was thinned down to 5/8" thick....and the bottom panel will be 1/4" thick plywood....Haven't decided on what gets built inside, yet..... Stay tuned...
July 9, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Had to mow the yard first, then weed whack..THEN haul the Boss to the store.....FINALLY was able to sneak down to the Shop! Traced around more sockets.. Then fine tune those lines a bit....so I can see them... Remember..cut on the waste side of the lines Then a few chops on the show side of the board.. About halfway...to prevent any blow-outs to the "good" face...then flip the board over.. And finish the chops, time to test the fit.. Hmmm, not going down all the way? What is the hold up? These 2...a few whacks with the chisel, then clean them out on the inside ( Crumbs...) Try again.. Repeat for the other end... Lay this down, for now.. Top will get glued to the back...after the meeting angle has been cut.. First, though... This needs set up...need grooves all around for the plywood bottom panel. Stay tuned...
July 10, 20223 yr Author Popular Post The Stanley No. 45 is set up.. have to knock the dry fit apart..and set up the first of 4 jigs....one for each side...one jig does not fit all, this time around This is the board for the back...Checked to make sure the groove will be along the correct edge... 1st pass...was a might too deep...and, I am going against the grain....back off the cut..try again. That will do...NEXT! Since the front was a lot narrower than the back...had to move a few things in the jig.. Made a lot of use of that old candle, makes the plane move a lot better...NEXT! Next 2 jigs differ in how that angled stop is set... Noodles are getting thinner, too....reset the jig.. Figures...last one to do, and the only one I was going WITH the grain.... Done with the jig, set it and the plane aside...Couple partial dry fits, to get the size of a plywood panel just right...bandsaw to cut, leaving the lines... Hand plane to joint to the lines..dry fit.. No glue, yet...a look at the inside? Ok..knock this all apart, again....this time, we will add the glue....but first, I need an angle... As when the clamps come back off, I need to plane a beveled edge along the front...so the lid will lay flat... Cauls and clamps...and check for square, All 4 corners. Let this sit a day or 2.... Time to sweep up all the Krunchies, and call it a day....star time was 1400 hrs...end time was 1515 hrs...counting the sweep up. Had Lunch to work off, after all... Steak Carne Asada...with Rice and Beans...and.. Something to wrap it up in... Think that will do for today....stay tuned ( Burp)
July 11, 20223 yr Popular Post Your lunch looked pretty darned good When you set the 45 up for this job, after the initial blade depth adjustment - you then have to reset the depth of cut with each pass?
July 11, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Nope, the plane does have a depth stop. I set the stop to the depth I need to reach....plane until the it no longer is cutting...then check for any high spots..and the groove is done.
