I have a 45 just like the picture with 2 boxes cutters in a box I made from MDF. (heavy box) Anyone ninterested can PM me and we can negotiate. Well I did find the picture.

 

 

I do have all parts just not in this picture. Had to buy them piecemeal since the plane did not have it all when I found it.

Friday I drove across the state to the widow of a late woodworking buddy.  She sold some of his bigger stuff, but just wanted to get rid of the rest as she found it depressing.  She was grateful to see it go to good and appreciated use.   A full-sized pickup with cap, filled with boxes of stuff to the top and a few very well made shop equipment -- miter saw with stand, router table with stand, disk sanders, drill press, couple of smaller dust collectors, sanders, planer, and a bunch of undetermined bits, blades, hand tools, portable power tools, routers, saws, etc.  She donated to the ww club of which he was an active member when he lived in the area.  So we need to decide how to distribute/auction off.

 

Has anyone use eBay as a private auction site that can shed some light?

 

Yesterday, theater set building, today mowing as much of the yard as was dry, about 80% it.

 

Next week, M-F, I'm doing a mission project in Dayton where there were severe tornado damaged homes 2 years ago.  Some are so bad they have no power and no water.   Potentially doing drywall, siding, underlayment,  basement foundation cleaning and painting, and whatever else comes up for our crew.  The coordinator has hinted there are some "woodworking projects" he has in mind for me.

Have not done a private auction on eBay but have sold on it . I did not know private auction was possible.

 

Apparently "private listing" only makes buyers anonymous and is not like a private auction site.

Keith, with all the charity work you do you truly have a heart of gold. Wish I was able to do the same. No advice on e bay auctions, since I've never used such a thing...but I wish you luck with whatever you come up.

I've identified a relative I've never met. He's 20-21, forgoing college for the trades, and is a carpenter's apprentice. Restoring a Virginia barn on mom's property into a residence (hearsay, I have seen neither) and my aunt speaks glowingly of her grandson. He's be my ...  first cousin once removed.

 

Assuming nothing else comes up, in about 20 years, with the grace of the saints, I'll pack up a trunk or three of my best hand tools for him. Mechanic, luthier, joinery tools.

 

The other way is to place a CL ad for a few obscure items, and when a likely candidate comes along, dump crates of stuff on them at 10¢ on the dollar. I had a box of blacksmith anvils for spoon making ... a young gal and her mom came by to check them out. Ended up offloading several crates of jewelry-making tools and supplies.

 

My c.1994 Rigid snap tool, bought new as an apprentice for $450, I sold a couple of months ago for $100 to a younger buck trying to make his mark. Mechanically perfect, only a few cutting wheels showing wear, never lent or abused. Religiously cleaned, lubed, stored after every major job (the only jobs I've usually accepted).

I am not familiar with eBay as a private auction either, Keith, and it has been many years since I've even sold on that platform.  I can say that going this route would be pretty time consuming.  Storing the items, sorting, cataloging, actual sale, likely needing to offer shipping - packing, working with usps, ups, etc., following up each stage of the whole process and then there is always one in every crowd that's going to cause a fuss - the bidder that don't pay, the bidder that wants to return, and then the process of dealing with the 'bay or credit card companies on all that.

 

If it were me (famous last words) I would contact a good local auction company.  They may offer a warehouse to unload and store the items in.  They will do all the rest and send you a check.  No muss, no fuss.  If they do on-line auctions they very likely have a pretty large data base that they do direct contacts with.  Some sale managers will offer shipping, and some won't.  They can advertise it as an estate sale, tool sale, charitable sale, etc. to gin up the most interest.  If the widow lady wants the tax deduction for 2022, the suitable documentation is easily provided with a copy of the clerking sheets that would be provided to the club.

We have a couple auction houses around here I tell my son to use when I'm gone.  They have online auctions and sell everything from a shop, even the pencils.  The owner gets the bid money and the auctioneer gets his from a percentage tacked onto the sell price.  Seems to bring a fair price and they do all the work.

Yes, I'm a 300+ transaction 100% former eBay'r fella.

 

For example:  I acquired a small mountain of high-end leather swatches from a 3rd generation furniture store closing - I was literally there when the lawyers called to say the building was definitely sold, and helped hang "The Banner". The swatches I organized by grade I - thru - VIII and size, and sold them packaged USPS Medium Flat Rate Box sales via eBay. Each group I'd sort, photograph, box, seal, and number the box. Then run the ad, usually a few ads at a time. Up to ten or so. Everything sold, they wanted more, especially book binders and makers of stuff.

 

Enameled cast iron Le Creuset griddle pans list price $160, on closeout at William Sonoma for $10, I discovered could be bought, shipped to me, based on dollar figure - not weight. I bought up every last one across the country, resold them on the 'Bay, and reaped a few bucks a sale.

 

WS dishcloths on closeout, 25¢ each, sold at ¢2 each.  Until WS discovered what I was doing.  :-)

 

All this for the fun of it, to see that it could be done.

 

End of the day, I'd not bother again. Especially now, with the new tax reporting laws and eBay's requirement of a linked bank account.
