Had some errands to run this morning. Coming home, Lynn saw a small table at the curb, and asked me to go around the block for a closer look.

In reasonable shape, and it cleaned up nicely. She'll find a use for it. BUT... under the table was THIS...

Heavily encrusted with sawdust, and rather ratty-looking, but I figured I'd toss it in the truck for a closer look. Got it home, plugged it in, and... IT RUNS! Like a charm! I'll get it cleaned up and looking respectable. I'm sure I can find someone who can use it. (I already have two, a bench-top and a floor model.)

Cleaned up the sander and realized... the 6" disc is missing, as well as the table. I'll have to see what I can come up with.

Go back and tell them they didn't toss it all out. You would appreciate if they toss the rest while you wait.

Wow, that's a nice table. If it were a fiddle, I'd analyze at the encrusted perimeter of grime. A bridge table? Or more likely used by a right-handed person writing weekly notes, administering monthly business? An unassuming gentleman named Sven who lost his left foot in The War, walked with a limp, enjoyed liver and onions, and had a Bulgarian lover he saw on TUESDAYS! 

 

Sander, I want! Yes, knock on their door. Show interest in the dad's old bench and the hulking table saw. Who knows, it may something like John Morris's inherited workbench.

I have no idea WHAT the table was used for. It's 25 1/2" high, which seems a bit low for a bridge table. The top is 14" wide, with two 8 1/2" wings, so opened up it's a 22" x 31" oval. There are four small brackets on the legs, which probably supported a shelf about 5" off the floor. Maybe they'll put the shelf out today, along with the sander parts! I'm DEFINITELY driving by to take a look.

   As for a workbench, I got one pretty much the way you describe. It belonged to a recently-deceased Austrian cabinet maker, but was nowhere NEAR as fancy as John's.

Early 50's Dunlap 4" X 36" belt drive belt sander. 

 

TradeMaster. Made in Taiwan. 1992. And it's probably missing that crosswise stop thingy too!

Does that take 3" x 21" belts?  Or are the bench models different?

 

There is an old wooden milk bottle crate in a corner of that basement FILLED with the attachments and other valuable parts. 

 

Taiwan makes good stuff.  I gave an older Japanese-designed Taiwan-built TOA power-mixer-speaker to my nephew, he beats the snot out of it gigging, and it is still 100% functional.

 

Next week, if I muster the energy, this Taiwan-made Delta is mine for $50 (plus $50 gas and tolls).  Original miter slider thing, fits the groove without wiggle.  230 miles RT but it is a nice drive through mostly flat Delaware. The motor makes a "noise". The saw evidently cuts normally. Comments? Run? Hide? Get it ASAP?
