I know you weren't Tom nor did I mean to imply so by any fashion. My apologies. Like most of us, we're our own worse critics. That said, your end table, nesting tables project was a long ball home run. It was crafted beyond the hand...it came from the heart!!
February 7, 20224 yr Have a Doors CD on my stream for shop and have just had to cut a song or two as just not in my baileywick. Now CCR all day. By the way like the way the other doors are going

Both the design and the technique (if you will share). i have 3 tools: normal punch awl, produces a nice round hole. and two modified old screwdrivers, one makes a nice short line hole (just a filed down straight screwdriver), and the other makes a more rhombic shape, think it starts small on one end, gets big at the center, and then toward small again, and that also is made from a ground down old flat screwdriver. i'll try to get some in progress and after shots of the work and the tools.
February 7, 20224 yr Author Popular Post some punched copper from a prior house, using these same tools:
February 7, 20224 yr Love the look and especially the wheat pattern of those DAB. Great job reducing the size for the small door. Perfect match. What do you use as a backer support while piercing?

What do you use as a backer support while piercing? for that copper, i had some scraps of wood holding down all the edges, and then the backer was like 20 layers of news paper (that day's Washington Post). i've since found that just a sacrificial piece of plywood works fine too, and I just tape the edges down to keep things from moving around (blue tape). that copper really wanted to bend with all the punching, very soft, and lots of holes. our bed, where I also did the punched metal: those were all done with just the awl, using my own designs for Southwest inspired art.
February 7, 20224 yr Thanks DAB for the feedback. Nicely done on the bed too. I picked up some sheets of copper around Christmas at Hobby Lobby. Sheets were in the closeout section. Priced 75% off IIRC. Hope to be well enough this spring/ summer to try on a project. I had considered using some rigid foam insulation board as backer, but if old ply gives the results you got that may be better. I'm watching this progress with great interest. Enjoying it alot. Thanks! Oh and the music side has brought back a lot of memories too! Well a few memories anyway.
February 7, 20224 yr Author the backer for the punch work for these door inserts will just be some 3/4 CDX plywood. have a 30x30 scrap laying around. for the doors, i got a sheet of galvanized sheet metal from HD, 24x36 in size from the HVAC section, it was about $13. and i'll get all 4 door inserts out of it. cheaper than wood actually (each insert is about 8-1/2 x 22-3/8, so that would be about 1.3 BF each if it was lumber. and Poplar at HD is about $8/BF equivalent. love cheap solutions that look awesome when done. they'll all be backed by 1/4" hard board (the dark brown stuff), so there are no exposed sharp edges inside the cabinet. you could use either pegboard or some metal screen material if you wanted the door to breathe and let in fresh air.
