February 2, 20224 yr Popular Post So..after getting that Paul Sellers' Keepsake box done...I still had this on my bench... Mainly Red Oak..and one Ash.. Ash is a bit on the thin side, the rest are 1/2" thick...remembered a Desktop Organizer sellers made a while back...thought maybe I could cobble another one out of this mess....downloaded the 3 page Plan.. Be the starting point... Then I'll worry about that drawer....cutting list? have already been modifying to suit what I have... Letters are in the computer screen shot only, not on the boards themselves. These will be the bottom and the lid... Back is a full 4" tall, as are the sides...front is just 2" tall. And it will go above the drawer opening. And that was as far as I got, today....going to go and watch Episode #1, Desktop Organizer..... Stay tuned...will try to have this done before March gets here...

February 3, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Snuck back down to the shop, Wanted to get some things set up. Like maybe tracking down a 1/4" plywood panel about the right size... This will be the bottom of the compartment. Needs a rebate and a few grooves to sit in... Easy one first, right? Riiight..... 1/4" x 1/4" rebate...next, grooves laid out to match this rebate.. And hope they all line up...took awhile.. Next task WAS dovetails...Sellers went with tails first...was having trouble laying them out..so I switched back to Pins first.. Was in the shop about an hour...to get this far. Right leg was saying it was quitting time.... Will see how things go, tomorrow..stay tuned
February 3, 20224 yr Popular Post I haven't even had time yet to eat a donut since you got the curved side box done and you're already half way through this build.

Made a bowl of Cream of Wheat and sausage patty. Little options though, no donuts and no way to go get any. FEMA probably wouldn't accept a donut emergency plea.
February 3, 20224 yr Popular Post What no jam or hazelnut spread either? That is my emergency go to stash with the vanilla wafers.

Not a fan of hazelnut...poor advance planning...no vanilla wafers either...wife made me sit in the truck Sunday while she picked up dumb stuff like, soups, milk, bread, fresh fruits and meats, then leaves me stranded out here. I'm starting to think she intentionally planned this in advance
February 3, 20224 yr Author Zatarains Smoked Sausage Jambalaya for supper tonight. Just don't have any beer in the house to wash it down.....Have Hostess Twinkies for dessert.... Winds from18-35 mph...colder than a Siberian Bat's rear end..... Currently, my view of the world....
February 4, 20224 yr Author Popular Post 9 pm Laundry Detail, this evening...so... Did some more lay out work...also had 2 extra cuts to mark out... had to be careful where this saw went.... As I need to leave that tab,,,,or, at least half of it... Outside face chopped about halfway down and 1/2 of that tab.. Cleaned up the waste areas...note the tab...Used these pins to lay out the tails. Then saw and chop those,,,,dry fit? Can't get it any further down, like something in the way, holding this apart...hmmm IF I trim that tab down a hair...and some "trash" around it, this will close right up. No filling a square hole required. Might have the plywood a bit oversized.. Waiting on the other 3 corners to get done, then trim this to fit...front of the compartment even fits... Should be easy to glue in place, later, after the corners are done Quitting time, according to the back of the leg was 10:20pm....still waiting on the washer to get done, then load that into the dryer... Took a while, tonight...due to all the layout work. Took my time, to try to get it right. Stay tuned..might actually get something done, tomorrow?
February 4, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Just a way to hide the end of the groove. While getting clothes in and out of the dryer last night....set up for some of today's "Follies" Something like this. Stay tuned (trying to avoid the dreaded "Honey-do List)
February 5, 20224 yr Author Popular Post 90 minute work session in the shop....AFTER an hour of Honey-do Job.....Back of the right leg now has a crampy softball size knot..that makes walking rather "fun"... Had 3 tasks to do...one was a little bit of handsaw work.. Followed by more of that chisel work to remove the waste..Had to switch out the old Atkins No. 50 coping saw for a newer (sharper, too) Millers Falls coping saw...to level things out, and trim that stub tenon... Used the pins to lay out the tails..just trace around around them with a very sharp pencil. Then a few saw cuts at the bandsaw... Then a chisel or 2 to clear out the waste..and then a dry fit...that took a mallet to do (might have been a little too tight?) Yep...I could also cut the plywood panel for length...width will have to wait... "Look Ma, no holes" And, that was two out of three tasks, today....the third one? Got to the layout stage, and I stopped. Was getting flustered. Trying to line up to cover the groove in front...Save this for tomorrow. Two more corners to get done, then maybe a glue up? Then I can start on a drawer for this box? Again, I'll just sit a plywood panel into a groove....back of the drawer MIGHT look a bit different, when I get it done... Stay tuned
February 5, 20224 yr Author Popular Post 2 hours in the shop, today...plus killed a mouse. The 4 legged kind....got too close to the sole of me boot, it did. Shop Cats? They too lazy.... Anyway..had some fancy cuts to make.. And then some more fancy stuff.. Dry fit, to cut the plywood to size... Repeat for the other end... Something was holding that end out...hmm... Need to run a plane along that ragged edge....then things will fit better...so... Glue, a brush to spread the glue around...oh, and a forest of clamps. C clamps to clamp the floor board into the rebate, and a bed of glue. Back of the box. Will let this mess sit right here, for a day....next up? mill and glue on the bottom panel of the box.... Stay tuned...
February 6, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Clamps came off today..slowly... After about half were taken away...and nothing flew apart..always a good sign Got the rest taken off, time to clean a few spots.. And..fill a few.. Back of the box... Some detail work, to level the edge.. Looking a little bit better...sat this thing onto the panel that will be the bottom of this box... According to Sellers..edges of the bottom panel get a round-over...with a plane, cleaned up with sandpaper..so.. I do both ends first..then.. The long grain edges...looking for that crisp corner detail...set the box back on this panel.. Trying to center it up....next...still following along with Sellers...these two get glued together...so... Required 7 clamps. Next up? Would be the lid....except this panel isn't quite wide enough, to allow for the hinges, AND the rebated edges...we have ways.. Will be the "front" of the lid. Need to let these 2 glue-ups sit a day... Stay tuned
February 8, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Yesterday....prep work was needed to be done....clamps removed. Needed the bench vise cleared off..to hold a metal working vise. had hinges to flatten out.. Wanted to close those gaps up, makes for a tight lid around back...clamped into the jaws of the old Monarch... And see how close I can get... Hammer to assist in keeping things straight...had a slight "spring-back".. Just have to remember which leaf goes on the box, and which on the lid Vise put away( better eat your Wheaties, before you lift it!) need to set up a rebate plane... Fence installed, will fine tune it's setting later..depth stop also needed installed... To about the thickness of the hinge leaf. Unable to even budge the knicker's bolt, I suppose I can use a knife, instead...be sharper, anyway Lid was taken out of it's clamps, needed to be planed a bit, due to the glue lines..so.. Didn't come out too badly.. Have to do both faces. Then decide which one looks the better...and that will be the "Show Side"....glued on extra will be the front edge of the lid. sat the box on the "underside" of the lid...traced around the box....idea was to center the lid all the way around, and trim off the "extra" width round in back.. Something like this. Sellers cuts a shallow rebate around the lid, the depth of the hinges. THEN he does the round over to match the bottom's one... Dug through the left-overs.. and found enough for the 4 drawer sides.....I MIGHT have enough 1/4" plywood left for the drawer bottom. Was a LONG day, Monday....Prep Work was after all the errand running from the Boss.... May see how things go today..AFTER Lunch Stay tuned..
February 8, 20224 yr Popular Post Enjoying the build-a-long Bandit. This one is really taking shape. Like your artistic license to Paul's versions. I need to look into Sellar's archives. I've watched a lot of his videos, and follow his Blog, but somehow missed these treasures.
February 8, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Worked on getting the lid installed, today...2-1/2 hours in the shop....kind of sore, now....must have been all the cussing going on Anyway, centered the box to the lid.. Had to trim a hair off one end...to get the same rebate all the way around...then..1st rebate.. Done. worked on the other end. Done..then the long grain sides.. Done. Figured I'd try out both the Stanley/Wards and the Sargent/Craftsman..about the same...then do the round-overs... With a smooth plane, and a sander...both ends first...then the long grain sides.. had to watch how the grain was going... next, lay out for 2 hinges...1-1/4" in from the end.. Got a wee deep on that corner,,,happens on the bigger jobs.. Then some hinge install tools Smallest Phillips screwdriver I have. Handle sticking up is attached to a 1/2" wide chisel, that kept trying to roll away... One done.. Once both were done...used them to lay out the locations on the box itself....line up the rebates with the top edges of the box.....almost had enough hands.. New drill bit in the G-P eggbeater...wax on the screw's threads is REQUIRED in this Oak. Design is such, that the rebate stops the lid from flopping back flat. Close the lid, and check for gaps... Then, before I closed up shop, for the day,,, Rough cut the parts for the drawer. Which be will the next time I get to the shop...had enough fun for today.. Stay tuned...
