Before doing offset you place three colored lines on tree to locate the cuts. On the tailstock end mark the three colors on the circle left by the live center equiadistant around the circle and center the point on one of those marks for the first cut. I used a skew for the one pictured and also did another with detail gouge. I liked the skew best so far. Plan to try a point tool next and maybe a diamond parting tool. I used brush tip markers to color. After this pic I colored the top ball with metallic gourd dye. Oh and repeat the cut for each color. Trick is to not cut so deep it goes all the way around.
