April 17, 20215 yr Popular Post Gene, it's awesome! Looks like the house part of the total project is near getting wrapped up. Edited April 17, 20215 yr by Fred W. Hargis Jr
April 17, 20215 yr Popular Post Thanks, Fred. We have two more entrances that need steps and hand rails. But, those will wait until the shop is up and running.
April 17, 20215 yr Popular Post @Fred W. Hargis Jr - that table is beautiful. I really like those legs/feet over the plans' model. @Gunny - To your dad: @Gene Howe - That handrail is beautiful. Your son does great work! I've a pretty busy next few days planned. Today I have a couple craft projects that have been painted, need to assemble and hang one or both. Run a few errands, daughter is coming this afternoon to have supper and stay the night with us. And then it's WOT to get the yard work done, sort a few things out and load up the truck for a trip to Ohio next week. I was hoping it would warm up before we went, but, there will be another trip up during the summer I'm sure.

They had "inherited" some quilting fabric from a woman who had died. She said there were 40 big totes of fabric that were awaiting use. My wife has shown me other photos of people who have full rooms full of totes of fabric. One of the members of the club was both a farmer and an part-time excavating contractor. Whenever he bulldozed down a tree with lumber potential, he had it sawn up. I visited his place when he was about 90 and had a 3000 sq. ft. barn full of air-dried lumber waiting to be used. I think he passed at 94 or 95 and I'm sure there was a lot of it left. In his house, his dining room was paneled with black walnut planks. I am somewhat guilty, I've been making stuff for 18 months and only had to buy a sheet of 1/2" plywood because the wife did not want it to be too heavy with 3/4" that I had. But it's getting down, some. Well, sometimes saving wood can come in handy https://www.rollcall.com/2021/04/15/this-wood-sat-in-storage-for-100-years-now-its-being-used-to-fix-capitol-riot-damage/?fbclid=IwAR15MsA4nhNx6gdVFlc8Q1-fvkI5BI1W59aTXbzAll9TzYUbUYdTclayEtA
April 17, 20215 yr Popular Post Fred the table turned out looking great! Gene your railings look good, your son is very talented. Started demo for the kitchen on Thursday with the removal of the ceiling on an enclosed porch. Original owners closed this up some years back and installed interlocking tile stapled to the ceiling & an outside back door, but never removed the original door which pretty much made this a closet with outside access. We have used it as a pantry and now will incorporate the 30 sq.' into the new kitchen. Years of steel mill soot just waiting for me to let it lose. Tomorrow is the last time the Sunday coffee club will meet at the usual table until I am finished, dumpster arrives Wednesday. Later today we are taking my Dad out to dinner to wish him a 95th birthday. He said we need to eat fast because he has a poker tournament at 7:30 at the K of C.
April 17, 20215 yr Popular Post done sawing and dipping the sticks into paint, now wait for the paint to dry. we paint one end to signify which end goes into the target stand, so that end never gets staples into it. found an "OOPS" can of black paint last year, $9, that'll work just fine. any dark color will get the point across, but black works well.
April 17, 20215 yr Popular Post i'm the 'go to' guy for both ranges i'm a member of for making shooting related stuff out of wood. target sticks, walls, various boxes, fault lines, shooting boxes, whatever else the match directors dream up. having a nice shop really helps get things done in an efficient manner.
April 18, 20215 yr Popular Post Keith, thanks for that article. I had wondered where they would get replacement wood and if the craftsmanship would nearly match. It is good that some things are kept back. When I was a child, we saved crooked nails, since we didn't have the money to buy any. If it was crooked, you rolled it on a piece of brick while tapping the shaft with a hammer until it was reasonably straight. At my house, we are getting rid of 45 years of accumulation. Just need to get our children to take their stuff and make a decision.

Fixing to haul a load to Ohio soon. Put a small truck load in an auction earlier this year, have another load to take to the auctioneer when we get back. The wife has been filling up the trash can each week with her work related stuff that accumulated over the last many years.

This must be the trend for 2021. Patti just informed our daughters yesterday that there are boxes waiting for them here.
April 18, 20215 yr Popular Post Off to get a washing machine, bearings seized on drum last night. Had a extra one but when I went to look the water pump seal has also died. Nah I ain't in that today. Just get a new one and be done with this mess. Thankfully I made a nice walkway from side of house to front and easy access door to basement. Should be a easy task. Notice I said should...... We had a chunk of steel about 6" round by 4" high. Heavy sucker, but I still have it! FWIW, about 50 pounds of those nails went to a recycling depot last year. Dad's been gone for 25 years.
April 18, 20215 yr Popular Post 128 perfectly straight 5 foot long target sticks, and then we have "Dave", who wants to play hockey.....there is always one problem child.
April 19, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Twas a good "Curb Shopping" weekend! Found a matched set of 4 Bridgestone Blizzak tires that will fit the Pilot. The guy that was putting out 3 sets of tires said they're all good tires, just don't have the cars they fit anymore. Looks like this set might only have one season on them.
April 19, 20215 yr Dad Funeral is tomorrow, so off from work and a drive down south of me. http://www.moodyfuneralhome.com/obituary/richard-dick-curtis
