February 25, 20215 yr Thanks for posting that link Lew but it leaves me confused. Hopefully one of our members can bring me up to speed. According to his post Clewes paints the AAW as something akin to a secret cabal for wood turning. Somehow I find it difficult to believe the AAW is planning to take over the world. I know that all associations like the AAW get a little political but geez. Paul
February 25, 20215 yr Funny thing about organizations. While as you said they aren't trying to overthrow the government or form a cabal, some seem to get this greater than thou attitude among the upper heirachy.
February 25, 20215 yr Popular Post Sorry for the confusion I don't know Mr. Clewes or Mr. Schramek. Nor, am I a member of the AAW board of directors. I am not knowledgeable of the circumstances that initiated Mr. Clewes' complaint. My reason for posting the video was to alert any of our readers, who are members of the AAW, Mr. Clewes' concerns.
February 26, 20215 yr Author No confusion Lew. I figured that’s why you posted it. It’s always interesting how organizations can get political or polarized. Paul
February 26, 20215 yr Popular Post Since my discharge from the USAF, I have made it a point to avoid any associations, cabals, guilds, lodges, societies, league, or union...well, except for marriages.
February 26, 20215 yr I personally don't want to get involved with the AAW at the organizational level. I do enjoy the magazine but know I'll never be able to achieve the level of workmanship and artistry displayed.

February 26, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Agree with Gunny. You’re as good a turner as any of them. There are some very definite divisions in turning. One major division is art vs utility. When you look at show winners many times they are pure art and very beautiful. Others are more utilitarian, that’s probably not the best choice of terms, but they are actually useful. The art world of turning tend to dominate the shows and those turners tend to be more visible and marketable but I’m not sure they are better turners. Should you choose to turn art work, and some of your turnings are certainly in that category, yours are as good. Paul
February 26, 20215 yr Popular Post @Gunny @Masonsailor Thanks for those kind words. I guess I see the world through utilitarian glasses. Very seldom does an "artsy" idea come to mind as I'm turning.

February 27, 20215 yr I have meet both gentlemen spoken of and will not comment publicly. This whole thing started over wearing a facesheild for doing demos at the symposium. It was IMHO blown out of proportion but it does look like some backroom shenanigans went on. As to woodturning and art. The "art world" is extremely reluctant to accept woodturning as any type of art and classifies it as craft.

Knew better than to ask though. Like I need more drama in my life....
February 27, 20215 yr Popular Post I suppose it all depends on one's POV or, how art is defined. I've seen some very beautiful projects here on TPWW. IMHO, they're all art of one sort or another. To paraphrase some ancient sage, Art lies in the eye of the beholder.

I am bringing home a rag from work, make a frame and post as project. Frame made of wood, holding some Art. Might even label it Expressionist Art or something, ya know to sound classy and all.

February 28, 20215 yr I don't understand the heading to this post. Did this guy start this post or what?
