Good Monday morning!

Good Monday morning Patriot Woodworkers! What did you get done over the weekend, and what have you planned for the week ahead! Inquiring minds want to know. Please tell us what's happening in your shops, your life, and any events going on with you. Thank you for being here folks!

Merry Christmas!

Split Hero cmas_wreath_2 600x600.jpgThis will be the last Monday topic before Christmas, so I just wanted to take this moment to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, and be safe and sane, and please remember, if you are out and had a little too much joy in a glass, call a cab, an Uber, a sober friend, and get home safe, we expect everyone here to return to us after the Holidays, alive and in one piece!

Also, for those of you who get some neat stuff under the tree this year, don't forget to share it all here, and brag a little! :)

On a personal note, our Army daughter made it back home to us this past Thursday, for a two week stay with us over the Christmas Holidays. We finally have all three of our pups under the same roof again, we couldn't be more happier!

The following article was written in 2018 just before Armistice Day.

For 32 years, a 10-foot model of the battleship USS Louisiana has been taking shape — slowly, painstakingly — in Dr. Ron Kennedy's Baton Rouge workshop.

Now, in time to celebrate 100 years since World War I ended, it's finally over, over there, and in its permanent home.

Kennedy's meticulously detailed model of the warship will be unveiled when the USS Kidd Veterans Museum observes the centennial of Armistice Day at 1 p.m. Sunday.

"This is what it looked like when she was launched," Kennedy said. "It's as accurate as it could be."

Kennedy took up the project when then-U.S. Rep. Henson Moore suggested the museum needed a model of the ship, which was launched in 1904. It carried President Theodore Roosevelt to the Panama Canal in 1906, the first time a sitting president had left the country. From December 1907 to February 1909, it circumnavigated the world as part of the "Great White Fleet" that Roosevelt sent to display U.S. military power.

The Louisiana saw little action in World War I, and it was sold for scrap in 1923. The figurehead on the ship's bow is displayed at BREC's City Park. Kennedy used to see the figurehead when he was a child.

"So, I always had that in my mind, and when I started building models, I always thought one day I'd build a model of the Louisiana," he said.

It took Kennedy longer to build the model than the real battleship actually existed, but he made every piece himself, and studied diagrams obtained from the National Archives and photos to get everything just right.

"What I did was use the drawings to build it and use the pictures of the Louisiana to make it exactly like the Louisiana was as opposed to the other ships," Kennedy said.

The museum's commemoration Sunday will include a talk by Steven Rabalais, author of a biography of Gen. Fox Connor, the chief of operations for Gen. John Pershing, who commanded Army forces that fought in World War I. The museum's World War I exhibit will be on display, and visitors will be invited to place poppies beside the names of those from Louisiana who died in that war.

What a labor of love that battleship was!  It is worthy of display in a museum for sure.  I am puzzled by the flag though.  In one pic it is the stars & stripes.  In another pic all I see is the field of stars?  Is there some optical illusion at work here?  The flag also changes direction in the way it is facing.

Got two bowls to finish off this morning, I woke up this morning to USGS alerts on my phone it seems that Kiluea Volcano has erupted so if you have any family in Hawaii Id check in.  I checked some sources internet twitter and a site and yes it did go off.

Working on two cherry boxes using my first attempt with my box joint jig.

While sanding the joints with my belt sander, I managed to mangle the end of my left index finger!  5 stitches later, plan to get back at it tomorrow.  Fortunately not my trigger finger!

The bow flag is  a Jack. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_of_the_United_States

Sad, only 2 years old.  I have the wheelbarrow my Father used when I was little.  They have pictures of me taking a ride in it.  Must be 40+ years old.  Nothing has every been replaced on it.

I have an older one that may be right at 40 but the tire exploded on it and that was why I bought the cheap one. Should have fixed the old one.

@John Morris, thank you for being so brave to trust us to back you up on this family this year.  Your faith is much stronger than mine.  LOL  Also, I am happy that you have all your family home for the holiday season.

@Cal On the stern is the national flag.  While underway, it is normally flown along the superstructure.  On the bow is the union jack which is flown on the bow only in port.  The National flag is flown on the stern in port.  Or, at least, that is what I remember from 1968.  But, then I didn't much care.  When I was highlined from an oiler to the carrier, an E6 yelled at me about saluting the flag.  I couldn't find it so I just gave a smart salute.  Oh, the days.  LOL

Working on a few pens from the fat pine.  Will post a pic in a few days.  They are going to neighbors.

Thanks Steve, Gerald & Pete.  It's pretty obvious to me now!  My Navy time didn't include any shipboard service, nor any of the Navy "traditions" :)

Cal, this is the extent of my Dad's shipboard experience. He went to San Diego NTC during Korea then trained to be a Corpman, he thought he'd be in it with the Marines but they assigned him to San Diego Balboa Naval Hospital, there he stayed his entire enlistment!

The USS Recruit was the only time he stepped foot on anything that resembled a ship.

The USS Recruit in image above is the modern configuration, before they updated it, it looked like this.

My son was blown away by my knowledge of the engine room and controls.  What he did not know is how, or why.  We trained to take over ships if needs be. Engine room is critical control area.  Now some training did include getting in, sabotage, and get out.  LOL.

So he asks in frustration what else did you guys train for? Taking over missile sites?  Gave him that evil grin and replied, do you really want to know?
