December 23, 20205 yr got this finished yesterday. i had turned it about 2 months ago, and then let it sit on my lathe since then, as the wood was fairly wet. turned the lathe on low, and noticed that the bowl had warped over that time. hard to notice when static, but obvious when turned around it axis. present for someone, will send off next week. no way i'm dealing with the UPS this week.

My Navy time didn't include any shipboard service, nor any of the Navy "traditions" Cal, how in the world did you get away without going onboard some seafaring vessel? Even the 2 year service went to sea. However, some folks put over 20 years in and never make it aboard ship. That I just don't understand unless those home town Selective Service boards made such a recommendation to see all us bad boys to sea. The Selective Service board in my hometown was determined that I was going to Vietnam, no matter what. After I was in Basic Training after 6 weeks, that board called Great Lakes and talked to my commanding officer to ensure that I was both in the Navy and that I was sent to Vietnam. I never went back to that town. Of course, President Nixon did away with the draft and dissolved all those Selective Service board.

I was in the Air Force Steve, but assigned to a naval base on Guam. https://www.metoc.navy.mil/jtwc/jtwc.html It was a pretty small outfit, about a dozen of us AF and maybe 15-20 navy folks. Pretty much a complement to NOAA's National Hurricane Center in Miami. Research in the off season, research & forecasting during the active storm season. You navy boys sure did eat good! Much better than the AF chow
January 3, 20215 yr On shore, chow was good. On board ship, it was more like hog slop. I kept food in my locker when the slop was too bad to eat. LOL
