Had a pile of Ash scraps, and other cut-offs.   Sorted through the mess....FUBAR ones were headed to the firepit can.    The rest?    Not much use as 3/4" thick "chunks", but....IF I resaw them down to 1/2" thick parts....I can glue up a few panels.    Make a few boxes.....Might even try that stack of 1/4" Red Cedar planks into small Souvenir Boxes like one sees at Tourist Trap Stores?    Mainly going to work on that pile of Ash.....

 

Reset the tablesaw saw.    Zero Clearance Overlay and the fence were installed.....set for a full height ( that this saw could do...) and 1/2" between the fence and the blade.    No, handsaw , or Bandsaw this time around.....Started working on the pieces that were still 5-6" wide......was having issues.....reset, and RIP everything to 3-4" wide....and try again.    Soon had a pile on the bench...

Thick ones are about 1/2" thick....thin being around 1/4" or thinner....was filling the bench up so much..

That even the bandsaw was storing some pieces...

Hmmm, might be needed for trays and lids?   have other uses for that short bit of 3/4" scrap....

 

Decided to at least try to joint a few edges...

Find a few that matched each other, for a panel glue up...

Couple of cauls to keep things flat....

While resawing to get the faces flat,,,,overlap was sometimes a bit...off.....this piece laid right over, just barely caught the spinning blade, and flew right back at me...glasses caught some of the impact, stiff upper lip got most of the attention....and bounced off.....heading for the burn pile. 

Got to about the 4th panel glue up...

Found out I was getting low on clamps....without using the 24" or longer ones....stashed the 4 over on the saw for a day, or two...

had also made a small pile of sawdust under the saw..

About an inch deep.   Shop Cat seems to like laying around in the stuff....

 

Monday?   Shop was closed, had errands to run.   Monday also had....

Just over 4" of this white crap arrived....snowed all night...so, today we are under a Level 1 Snow Emergency.....more or less snowed in..

Grrrr....That wooden planter stands 5" tall, BTW.....which means, I can just go hide out in the shop all day.   

 

I think I would have preferred November Rain, instead of this stuff.....may just send this down to Gunny's place....I think I can spare a bit..

Ok...Got the 4 panels out of the clamps, today...

looking a bit ....rough...we have ways....60 grit beltsander and a Junior jack plane...

Then decided on what size to trim these down to...narrowest one to set the rip fence...and square the ends....two at 11" long

Other two at 5-1/2" long.  Figured I could also sort through a stack of narrow stuff...

Well, maybe two stacks..

for the best match...ripped the worst edges smooth, and that Junior jack to joint a few edges...

And glue up a blank for a lid, of some sort...set this things aside, until tomorrow...and lay out a few tools..

And lay out some fingers...

6mm chisel set the spacing..more or less...lower the pair of sides in the vise...

BTW, there are 2 boards sitting there, both are the long 11" sides...set inside to inside...ready for the saw..

the "X" is the waste spots...time to chop a bit..

Working with just one side...chop 1/2 way down, on the show side ( outside) then flip this over..

And finish chopping them out....use these "fingers" to mark out the matching fingers on one of the end pieces...saw, and chop the waste...TRYING to leave the lines, while cutting out the waste...then first dry fit..

First ones are usually the worst fits, if it has been a while since I've done these joints.   repeat for the other corner, should be a wee bit better fit...in theory

#2 is on the right side.  Sides are 5" tall. 

 

Had enough fun for one day....closed up shop. 

 

Need to do the 3rd and 4th corners, and see about a groove for the plywood bottom....tomorrow.

That is a bit tall for my tap and die sets, don't think it will fit in my toolbox drawer.

Hmmm...ok...Worked on the last 2 corners, today..

Spacing was a tad bit...off...that's fine....as I use this to layout the other half of the joint...

Was able to finally dry fit the 3rd and 4th corners..

Nice, when you NEED a mallet to slide the parts together....

 

Got the Stanley 45 set up..

Set the depth stop at 3/16"..

Made a jig..

Very complicated....right...time to make some Pho Noodles...

As the groove to house the plywood bottom are milled...

1/4" wide, by 3/16" deep....then cut a piece of 1/4" luann...

To make sure it will fit...knock this all apart, and do a glue-up..

Glue, clamps and cauls.....

Might be just enough clamps?   Let this sit a day...tomorrow I can start on a lid, of some sort....

Nope,  plywood simply sits in the grooves.....unless a stray glob gets in the groove.....

 

Will see what sort of trouble I can get into.....after lunch....

Removed the clamps, today....SLOWLY

Joints cleaned up...ends checked for square..

Outside of the box is done....then some details for inside...

A padded bottom, and some supports for a tray...

 

Got the cordless mitersaw up and running..

had a few parts to trim to length..

Parts for a frame..

To hold the lid..

Means more finger joints to be made..

Then make sure the frame fits the box...

Some of the parts needed to be flattened a bit...

One edge thicker than the other sort of thing.....and a slight bow...

Blank for the lid also needed some work...on both faces...then the ends trimmed for length, and then the panel was ripped for rough width..

Panel will sit in a groove....first, I need to rebate the ends...

Once both ends of the panel were done...reset the Wards 78...

Spur needs to be out of the way...when going with the grain...

Router plane to clean up into the corners....run a few grooves into the frame's parts..

And check for fit...

Width between the rebates was a bit too wide....adjusted to fit...

 

Was working on the last groove...when a piece broke off....once I had found the little.....decided to just call it a day...

 

About 5 hours, today.....might have got a wee bit done...about wore out a few tools..

F - R:   #3, #11, and a #14.....along with the Stanley 45, a Wards No. 78. and the router plane....

I took a vacation day.

 

Cleaned up a few spots...

Leveled the bottom of a few grooves.   Was finally able to get the lid all glued up..

And, tomorrow, I can clean up the outside of the lid..

 

Worked on building a tray....1/8" thick slats, glued to a 1/4" plywood base...with a spacer bar..

So the side doesn't collapse in....made a blank for the handle...

Laid out where my fingers will go....decided to add a couple dividers...

Needs a fancy joint...to go from this, to...

Something like this.    Drilled the holes for the grip....and of course the top half breaks off....so, now it is also in a few clamps, until tomorrow...

So, during halftime, today...slipped down to the shop for a bit...clamps removed from the tray....glue joints all sanded smooth...tray is a nice slip fit into the box...

Clamps came off the handle, it also got cleaned up, sanded smooth....test fit into the tray..

Then, take the handle and dividers back out spread some glue..and assemble they back in, with a few clamps to hold them in place....

 

Lid; came out of the clamps, needed cleaned up..fingers sanded smooth....test fit to the box.....lid is too narrow along the long sides.

We have ways...

Add a strip of thin stuff to both sides....tomorrow, I can rip a bit off of each side, keeps things even...until it matches the box.   Will also work on the ends a bit...
