October 1, 20205 yr Popular Post The wife handed me a new drawing and project last night. It’s a small project to keep me busy while she finishes up the drawings for the next big project which is the media room. This is a stand for the fireplace tools. It’s mostly a long spindle turning of segmented bubinga and ebony. The bubinga I have but the ebony stash is too low. There isn’t enough left. She may have to compromise. I can get the same effect with black lacquered maple. I also don’t think I am going to do segmented rings. I think I will just cut discs of bubinga using the Shaper Origin and glue them up. Turning bubinga is always a thrill. Paul
October 2, 20205 yr Looks like it will be a great project. Now this plans thingy. Say what??? Napkins are okay, full on drawings on paper with details like length, width and height? I dunno..... Will summon @steven newman
October 2, 20205 yr Author She is actually really good at it. Our first several houses we drew all our own plans. That was back in the early 80’s when you could do that. Didn’t get a lot done today. Got about half of the discs cut. I should have it glued up tomorrow morning. Paul

Whole another ball game when they get involved and make drawings. My wife things the shop is where magic happens.... Rarely asks for something to be made, now fixing things she has days where I wonder if her goal was to destroy the house and everything in it.
October 2, 20205 yr Paul, you are extremely lucky in that your wife can make a real drawing. So many folks don't have a clue and some folks can't be taught. I used to love mechanical drawing. It looks rather simple, not all that complex. Can hardly wait until it is completed and we get to see a picture.
October 2, 20205 yr An interesting project Paul. Will you be turning the spheres also? Keep those PIP's coming
October 2, 20205 yr Author Popular Post She is trying to track down some small stone spheres to use for the feet. I think she found them today. The top large one is a 3 1/8” blue lapis stone sphere. Managed to get everything cut out for the pedestal and glued up. Now it’s just a matter of turning it on the lathe. Bubinga is nasty to turn. It’s kinda like concrete with wood grain. About two years ago I turned a large bowl as a gift for a friend and it was a real test of the turning tools. It dulls the tools very quickly but it is doable. Paul
October 3, 20205 yr Interesting about the drawing. I was never allowed to take drafting (or for that matter any other hand craft classes) in school, but when SWMBO and i were looking to build a house, we found a plan we liked and i got an architects scale, drawing pencil, and some vellum (or translucent bond?)...it was over 30 years ago... Anyway, i drew our house plan and that's what's on file in the county. it was totally off the top of my head stuff with the outlets, switches, everything. Other than what my builder F did, it's pretty much just like i drew it. Some of you may recognize these. Edited October 3, 20205 yr by p_toad
October 4, 20205 yr Author Popular Post I had one of those drafting pencils ! Well it was a busy day but did manage to get a little turning in. Got the pedestal roughed out and now I can bring it up to speed. Also the shipment from the Rock Shed arrived with the blue lapis sphere for the top and also a crystal ball she ordered for a Xmas present turning. If you want an interesting site to visit go to therockshed.com. Very nice people and have great stuff. Paul
October 15, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Well the desert trip is over so time to complete this project. While I was gone a new spindle gouge I ordered arrived so I took the time today and turned the handle. Paul Edited October 15, 20205 yr by Masonsailor
October 15, 20205 yr Popular Post I still have my drafting set I used in tech college. I drag it out from time to time and put it to use.
October 15, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Finished up the pedestal part which was the most time consuming. Now the handles for the tools and the top and bottom pieces. Paul
October 16, 20205 yr I really like how you alternated the grain patterns to give an almost bookmatched appearance. Very cool. I also like that clock! Did you make that?
