June 18, 20206 yr Author Supplies have been bought....had handles, but no bolts....needed hinges. Can of stain to refresh the Witch's Brew, and 2 brushes. magnetic catch to hold the door closed. Will see how all that turns out tomorrow....need to build a shelf....
June 18, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Ok...drawer needed grooves, to hold the drawer bottom in place....set up the Stanley #45 and made the groove in the drawer front.. But, used an older plough plane for the drawer sides.. Except..it has no depth stop....so I get close with this, and finish to depth with the 45... Dado to house the drawer's back...after I had cross cut and ripped one to size... Works for me. Then needed pilot holes, and then counter sink them... Drill a hole centered in the dados, flip over, and use the counter sink bit in the brace....glue and screws hold the back in place... Then cut the plywood bottom to size...and then assemble a drawer....
June 19, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Clamps are removed from the drawer, test fit into the opening....has a bit of room, in case the front should swell in the Kitchen....at least it won't stick shut. Was going to start in at 1300 hrs....running a wee bit late, today.....film @ 2300hrs...
June 19, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Ok...was working way too hard, for a FRIDAY....Gatorades on ice. On my 3rd one.. Door: Laid out the hardware and a couple tools.. had to wire wheel back to plain Brass on the hinges. Push drill and a Yankee 130.. Pilot holes for the screws, Yankee to drive them home...Handle needed larger holes drilled, it uses bolts, so... Not a problem. Yankee to tighten the bolts...A square metal plate was added between the bolts... And a Magnetic catch was added, once the door was installed...then close the door... Ok, Drawer needed 2 handles installed ( need to get the drawer back out..) Same routine, drill 4 holes, add the bolts, slide the drawer into place.. Then install all the plugs on this side of the cabinet...dab of glue, match the grain, hammer the plug into place....later, trim them all flush...sand as needful. I slid the top into place...to see how it will look.. We getting there. Haven't attached the top..yet...need it off, for now, as the middle shelf needs made, and installed.. This shelf. set high enough that 2lt Coke Bottles can sit under it. Stay tuned...maybe by next Friday, I could have this all finished....
June 20, 20206 yr Popular Post Not only is it nice, but I need a nap. Those hand tools exhaust me. Steven, I don't know how you keep all that in your head. Your work is amazing. Thank you for sharing.
June 20, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Ok, middle shelf build...according to the Plan, Page 4... Needed to cut the 3/4" plywood to size, and cut two notches to go around the legs.... And, glue the 3 edge pieces in place, let sit overnight... Ash edges have a rebate, to wrap around the edge of the plywood... View of the underside of the shelf...notches to go around the legs....needed a cleat for the other end... Used a pop bottle to set the height...as this is what will be stored under the shelf.... Errands to run...BRB..
June 20, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Ok, errands have been run, supper from a local food truck call Taco Bout....And...I didn't even get the large Burrito.....varnish and a few other items have been picked up.. Where was I...something about a shelf.. Once this cleat is installed where it is needed...then place the shelf where it needs to go.. Pop bottle to check the height...2 screws through each leg, then add a couple plugs... Drilled a few sloted holes.. To attach the top with...along with one dead center in the kicker...Had a lot of counter-bores to plug... Then come back, and trim them all flush... Had to adjust the latch on the door a bit. Tried out the kicker with the drawer.. This is why there is the kicker... Then the fun began...cleared off the tablesaw...checked which was the worst of the faces on the top...set it on the tablesaw bad side up...Had screws to install, once I managed to get the case up unto the top...took two people,BTW. Each cornerblock gets a screw.and the kicker ... Once the top was centered to the case. This puts a screw dead center in the top. Figured I could leave this mess in place...mixed a new batch of Witch's Brew...and started in... Got what I could from this direction...had to rotate it around...wanted to get a coat everywhere.. Had some wild grain so up...got the drawer front stained...I don't do the sides nor the insides of drawers... Had to have 2 people help out...they picked the case up, I slid the saw out of the way...and they set the case down on it's own four feet... Then I could stain the rest....including the inside of the cabinet... Tops of two shelves, and the top of the case...and any place else I missed... Drawer front is coming out a bit lighter than the rest...may try a second coat? Let this sit a day, or so....then add the clear gloss. then it might be ready to head upstairs? And get the casters installed... Stay tuned...might be done before July gets here...
June 21, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Wasn't happy about the top, or the drawer front....sanded the top at 150 grit, and wiped it down....then a second coat to both the top and the front of the drawer.. Trying to even out the Witch's Brew....before any varnish goes on....
June 22, 20206 yr You are a brave man, Steven Newman, for applying the finish with the hardware on It is looking really good.
June 24, 20206 yr Author Popular Post 1st coat of clear gloss is about dry....need to sand at 220 grit, and do a second coat....then rub that out....should be about ready to haul upstairs to the Kitchen....
June 24, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Second coat.. Drawer is open, so it won't get stuck.... Seen from the last step to the shop... Still a bit "tacky" to the touch....will let it sit a while longer...
June 25, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Fun times....not....had to flip the dang thing end for end UP the stairs....then stand it on end to install the casters.. 2 wheel dolly made things too tall to just wheel it up the steps... That be the Kitchen floor. Sunlight was a bit too bright, shining in the backdoor.... These....4 screws to attach one of these to each foot of the Island.... I let the Boss roll it to where she wanted it...of course, I set the trash can on the wrong end...instead of this end... Everything out of the old Island...2 drawers on it, went into a single drawer on this new one. Pop bottles fit...all the cookie sheets, muffin pans, and other such goodies are now behind that door... I think I'll go pop that top..might have just earned it....Boss is happy.. Thanks for looking in....I think I will take a little vacation from the shop...if nobody minds

June 25, 20206 yr Absolutely beautiful job, but please don't retire just yet. We won't have the entertaining lessons if you quit. Thank you for the journey.
June 25, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Need a week or two off....just to clean up the shop....and get things sharpened back up.....I DO have a few good "leftovers" to make something with...
