June 3, 20206 yr Popular Post Seems the Boss wants a new one. Laid in a few board feet of Ash.. Short one is about 24" long. Longest are 5' long....all have been planed to 3/4" thick...mostly 5-3/4" wide...about $20 sitting there Boss found a photo in Google ( hence the BAD picture) Was able to copy the sizes needed...she wants a solid ( raised) panel in the door. A single 5" deep drawer. need to go out and buy a few casters. Was able to draw up a plan....Art Department at Whattsamata U. then sent the paper plan over here, via Moose & Squirrel Delivery Service... Final sizes will be once things start up....depends on the glued up solid Ash panels I need to make. End without shelves will get a solid panel ( maybe a Raised one?) Bottom edge, between the 1 x 4 legs, will have a curve to it...1x 4s at the corners will get an angle detail. The bottom of the "legs" will be doubled up, to allow for the casters and a place for the bottom shelf to rest on....bottom shelf goes the full length. Then the end panels get attched to it. One for the handle side of the door, stops right below the drawer webframe....a second webframe for above the drawer, which also will attach the top to the case. Not sure about the Towel Holder....She wants to store 2lt pop bottles in the shelf areas....cookie sheets in behind the door. back of the door area will be a solid panel....doubt IF I'd do another door.....maybe Depends on which will be easiest to do... So..need to joint a bunch of edges, and glue up a few panels....may rough cut for length, first....and hope there is enough clamps in the shop....and cauls... Stay tuned...
June 3, 20206 yr Popular Post One of the best things I did when I made ours was to use full extension drawer slides.
June 3, 20206 yr Popular Post I have used these casters on a few projects. Both inside and outside they seem to work well. casters
June 3, 20206 yr Popular Post Sounds like raised panel shop is in business. Plan looks good. Need phone for Moose & Squirrel they do good work
June 4, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Or not....4 planks hauled to the shop, crosscut to 40"....straightline ripped to 5-7/8" width....still wasn't wide enough? Ripped a thin strip...dry fit.. Was getting a clamp pre-set. Needed to joint a few edges... "Ve haft vays.." Stanley No.7c, Type 9, used the shorty to cut down the worst of the high spots...Sargent VBM #414c, Type 4 Finally, glue, cauls , and clamps...LOTS of clamps... And...this is the "good side"....may need those 2 planes again...back side? This will be the top of the Island.....3/4" x 24" x 40" at the moment....needs trimmed down a bit. Once the ends are squared up =39" length...will trim the long edges until things are 23" or so wide. Will let this sit a day....North Branch was on the rise.. And, I was soaked.....was a bit "schticky" in the shop..... Stay tuned..might try for a "panel-a-day" for awhile...
June 4, 20206 yr Lookin' Good! I noticed a similar "river" this morning. Turns out the Mrs. powered up the A/C and I didn't have the drain hose in the sink.
June 5, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Shopping trip.....tried the TSC Store...smallest casters they had? Still to big....and about $10 a piece? Hmm, head over to Lowes....Menard's requires a mask to enter their store (34 miles away) and Harbor Freight was also too far away.....Lowes? two blocks from the TSC store, and I get a 10% Mil. Discount...so.. Just under $10 for all 4 of these ( need a few screws, though) rated at 40 pounds each, should be enough for the Island. 1-1/4". Now I can figure how long to make the leg blanks.....and the rest of the framework. Will see about getting the bottom shelf glued up tomorrow....and then the legs and two webframes May need to go back out and buy 4 more 9' planks.....
June 6, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Shopping today, Boss' idea...picked up a bag of screws for the casters...and a pack of 1-5/8" DW screws... Cut List: Some are set in stone....others? Merely a guide as to what is needed, maybe. Good thing Fred Flintstone was on "Lockdown" because...where it called for the top to be...3/4" x 23-1/4" x 39"....glued up panel was 3/4" x 24" x 40" By the time things were trimmed for square...3/4" x 21-5/8" x 38-5/8" Close enough. Before the glue up, I had made a huge "V" across all the boards...to show how they were supposed to be assembled....took the clamps off, today.. None were in the right spot....Bottom one was "OK" and the center one, too...some flipped end for end, one was facing the wrong way... Used the tablesaw to work as a bench for a bit....ends needed squared up.. Guide for the circular saw to follow. Both ends were done.. Then the saw was used as a saw....edges were ripped for width....then back to "Bench Mode" New 80 grit belt on the beltsander, had to clean out the filter on it, too....then the "bad" side was snaded down...at least the defects were also on that side... Then flip it over...and let Jack do his thing... Got most of the high spots down...used a slightly long plane.. To clean up after the Jack plane.....then a #3 showed up, and took care of a few small trouble spots. Yes, hip was hurting( legacy of 40+ years of forklift driving), with the clothes dryer not helping keep things cool in the shop....was getting soaked, and crampy.. Time to stop for the day...and have a couple Guinness Blondes....too bleeding hot outside....even the van's AC was doing much good. Just ran 4 planks to the shop a bit ago....marked one for length. And that was it... Stay tuned...
June 6, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Had to haul a fifth board to the shop....#4 had a BIG NASTY knot centered in it....I can use the 2 "halves" for the smaller shelf.... Other 4 got trimmed for length..~36-1/2" long...then straight-line ripped to get a few edges straight enough for a glue joint.... Just over 21" wide. Had laid the four planks here, to line up the grain a bit better, and best face up. Unlike the last time, none got mixed up...bead of glue, rub two boards together, and repeat...some of the shorter cut-offs worked very nicely as cauls. Will let this mess sit overnight on the top of the saw.... Almost too nice to be just a shelf.... Island's Top is sitting over on the bench....taking the entire bench top up.... Maybe have to have a "Page 2" on the Paper Plan....bottom shelf gets a lot of dados and notches made... Stay tuned...
June 8, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Not a great day in the shop...rather expensive one, too... Panel came out of the clamps ok....ends needed trimmed a bit.. Square to mark a cut line... A little off, at the glue joint, may see about hiding that knot, too Got both ends done, then ripped 1/2" off the worst edge....then I thought I could just buzz the high spots done with the beltsander..... Beltsander said "NO!" and refused to even start up.....motor had locked up....cheap Wall E World 3 x 18......trash canned it. Off to Harbor Freight in Lima, OH... Came back home with a 3 x 21" "Warrior" beltsander, and a couple course belts.....IF it goes bad, withing 90 days, I can just return it..... Speed square set up...makes a nice straight cut. Tried to flatten the panel....even with the new sander, and 36 grit belts...some spots called for drastic measures Turned out one face was better than the other...the plane? Stanley No. 6....made before Stanley added a frog adjust bolt.... Remember, this IS just the bottom shelf...final size? 3/4" x 20-5/8" x 35-5/8" And that was it for today.....too tired, too sore, was soaked when I emerged from the shop....trip to Lima wasn't helping much. Stay tuned, maybe tomorrow I can do a bit of drawing, and see what parts to make next... Edited June 8, 20206 yr by steven newman
June 9, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Didn't want to....but, somebody has to....besides changing out the flush valve in the toilet today..... Cut 4 blanks for the legs... And trimmed the foot area. Picture shows a thickened foot... To support the bottom shelf , and place to install the casters....so...I needed 4 bracket feet cut... These get glued on the "inside" of the feet. Then a caster can be screwed in place... Just spread some glue, add 2 clamps.. Then clean up tomorrow, after the glue has set... Needed rebates made... As these 2 will go on the ends of the bottom shelf... Something like this.. Will notch at each leg...same with the middle shelf.. Just need to be narrower...like 1-3/4" wide.... Will do the rebates later....have to build that shelf..first...I was going to rip a few more boards...but.. Tablesaw was busy with other things ( had to make sure the brackets were on the correct side)...bench was getting full.. That silver thing with the orange cord? B&D Sabre saw with a new blade! Needed notches cut... Where the legs sit into the shelf a tad...so.. One done, 3 to go... Stay tuned..
June 10, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Road Trip to pick up my saws...saws weren't done, yet...too many mower blades needed done, first...grrrrr Before the trip..killed a little time in the shop....making a lot of ..parts.. Legs are out of the clamps, one has been cleaned up... These 4 parts will be enough for ONE webframe..... These 3 are for the edges of the middle shelf, they all got a rebate. These 2 are for the ends of the bottom shelf. Resized due to being too wide...and These 2 are the sides of the bottom shelf, need to cut that curved detail along the bottom edge. Thought I'd glue up the divider panel... One side holds up the middle shelf (with a dado) other side is for the compartment's door...either a latch or hinges...to attach to..so.. Sitting in the clamps, awaiting the glue to dry. All 4 notches in the bottom shelf are done.. Need to do some sub-assemblies, before too much longer....running out of room May or may not head back to the shop, tonight....we'll see Stay tuned..
June 11, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Lets see....needed curves laid out... Then try to get the dull bandsaw blade to actually follow the lines....if not, we have ways Seymour Smith & Sons...then a dado needed milled for the upright/divider to sit in... All those clamps? Because the long aprons were installed... As the aprons close up the dado...Divider was trimmed for square, and the "show side" flattened and smoothed...and set aside... Was a LOT of cussing going on here....too many things for too few of hands...legs on one end of the bottom shelf were being glued to the bottom shelf...needed a way to get the two legs plumb and square to the shelf... More cussing....the 2 ends for the webframes, used as spacers....these are not glued in place, yet....need to build the frames first....all them clamps weighed as much as I doclothes were done in the washer, and I can't work in the shop with the dryer running, Uncles Charles decided to visi the top of my left foot, right at the toes... let this mess sit a spell ,time to close the shop..GATORADE ZERO !!!!
