My trusty apprentice has shown up this evening to try his hand at doing some lacquer work.  Wants some practice before he tries it on his chest of drawers.  Gave him my latest DC box to put a few coats on.  By no means am I an expert on using lacquer but I did show him some basics and then let him loose.  Gave him a qt can of semi gloss and a foam brush.  He quickly found out this is not like poly or paint.

That being said he has just completed his 2nd coat and seems to have gotten a handle on it.  Was worried it would not be as nice as other stuff I have in shop.  Again I told him doesn't matter it will be an example to show someone else.  Then reminded him of a few projects that went sideways and then into a black hole, lost for a time, to resurface and again remind me I screwed up.

Only comment on his part.  This lacquer stuff stinks bad!!  :JawDrop:

Who knew???

He needs a mask.

Seriously, he does. Lacquer fumes kill brain cells.

He had one and I vented the shop before during and after.  Still can smell the stuff though.

Am paying for the venting this morning.  Shop was at 500 this morning.

Had some shop time this afternoon.  Managed to put this box back together now that lacquer is dried.  Cooked it in the sun for a few hours.  Installed and fired up the DC.  Works well.  My apprentice will be by after school to make a small box to go inside the opening.  Said he took my advice and kept his eyes open and found something that might work with some modifications.  Should be interesting to see what he has found.

Thanks, Stick. That was me when I was about 7 years old. Made our own kites, also. :)

At one time, my dad had 35-40 cats living in his wood shed. No mice, though. Eventually, coyotes and hawks and owls thinned the herd.

Apprentice and I have been busy.  Took two drawers and made 3 fit in same space.  Cut down the two I had and made a new one from pieces of another drawer I removed elsewhere.  The drawer fronts I cheated.  Glued the two old ones together and then cut them into 3 pieces and fitted back.  Saved me fromm having to make new fronts and match the stain etc etc.

Also made some drawer inserts.  He enjoyed that and made 10 for his bench at home.  Painted them all.

Not bad, pretty satisfied with the outcome.  He had some drips and streaks and such but you expect that.

Yup, still has his moments though.  This evening he asks me why I drop the blade every time once done cutting.  Showed him that the habit keeps you from scarring a workpiece when using TS as bench. (Hey shop space is limited I use what I have.)  Then I showed him with a hotdog what happens when you have it up 1/8 inch and ram into it.

Good lesson and show and tell.  Or so I thought.  Numbnuts proceeds to rub his hand across and nicked it on the blade.  Nothing bad but when he went to clean something later with Brake Cleaner he howled like a cat with its tail on fire.

So he gets this tomorrow when I get it from work.  Think I might make a couple Order of the Blood Blade trophies again.  They were a big hit years ago.

I look back at my apprenticeship, and wonder why the hell Ron stayed with me. Big learning curve sometimes, also many funny stories, now, that weren’t funny then. You got no idea how happy it makes me to see some kids still want to actually make something. :)
