Got  any major sanding for him to do? That will throttle him back a little.:P

His Mother dragged a chest of drawers home that she wants fixed then refinished.  Have that to help him with repairs then he will be taking it home to sand and finish in newly cleaned out garage he will be using.  You are correct, should keep him busy.

This evening I started to think I opened a can of worms.  Having spent some time on woodworking sites and youtube he has come to the conclusion that my DC system is highly inefficient and in need of serious overhaul.  This was not a halfway effort, he put time into it.  Brought me diagrams and pictures of optimal set-up and a couple of recommendations for a new bigger better, suck a basketball through 100 ft of 8 inch hose DC's.  I believe I heard the phrase Pimp my DC no less than 5 times.  Another comment that tickled me was the DC needs to be turbo charged, almost choked when he asked if twin turbos was possible.  Yeah if we wanted to say suck the foundation out of the ground.

:throbbinghead:

Not much work done, but was very entertaining.  Now if he can win the lottery for me I might have the cash needed for these improvements....

...at least the kid is thinking for himself. If he is going to that length, to redesign the DC system, then he is probably hooked. The best you can do is keep encouraging him and keep him guided down the right paths.

Great idea with the dust collector. Now, how is he going to pay for it ?

I agree!  Today he went with his Dad to the borg and did some window shopping.  Got two things done, a Father and Son bonding session, and a lesson in how life works.  As in how much money things cost verses how much money you have, or don't have.

All part of the process of growing up!

Cool!! Good job!!!

Had a visitor this morning.  I can tell he has been chatting with his Father some.  Brought me coffee, large cup and two fine cigars from his Father's collection.  My first thought was this is a the bribe, but for what?  Well he followed my advice and got in contact with a friend I know locally that gets these pallets of tools, fixes them and resells them.  The guy is disabled and needs them transported, so my truck gets me first dibs on some tools.

His chest of drawers to be refinished for his Mother was painted.  So he got a ROS and a belt sander.  A belt sander was not something we have used so he figured it cannot be that hard.  He figured out how to turn it on, how to adjust tracking and practiced on a test piece.  Then went to town on the chest of drawers.  His phone rang, in a rush to answer (it was the President wanting advice on policy very important call ) he turned off the sander and immediately set it down.  Or so he told me, the aftermath tells a different story.  He did set it down, while RUNNING because he locked the trigger in place!!!  And of course it launched like a rocket across the side of the chest and impaled itself into the sheetrock of the far wall.  Still running it proceeded to grind down the wall.  Trying to get it to turn off he pulled the cord.  But he had wrapped that as I taught him so all this did was remove sander from wall and release it on the floor.

Life lesson #3402913  if the phone rings while operating power equipment, DO NOT ANSWER!

Now he has to fix the hole, thus the coffee.  Also he needs some scrap plywood and some sheetrock as well as tools to spackle and such.  That covers one cigar.  Then of course we have the sander.  In his final attempt to get the runaway rocket under control he yanked the cord from the body.  So some wiring repair was needed.  2nd cigar covered.

Life lesson #347892  if you see a tool that makes smoke and melts things, don't touch that end.

While soldering the ends to eyelets that go inside the handle he was curious how the tool worked. I explained how it melted the solder into the wire and when it cooled it made a bond.  He asked me how hot, I warned hot enough to burn you.  Curious he decided to pull the trigger then grabbed the end.  As you might expect it left a mark and some appropriate finer words of the English language were used to describe said pain.:JawDrop:

With instructions in hand, tools to do the work, and materials, plus some singed fingers he loaded up his car and went home.  It's early yet but I broke out a bottle of Cholula, added some to my coffee and broke out a cigar.  Shop work can wait a bit while I savor this mornings entertainment.

He is coming along good. He learned quite a few lessons yesterday and today, and again when he patches the drywall. these are lessons he will not forget for awhile, or ever. He doesn't seem discouraged and that is a good thing.

His Dad might wonder if he has taken up smoking.

Seems he is very inquisitive and sharp to learn all those lessons (I presume he learned) in one day.:throbbinghead:

Had I not gotten a text from his Dad warning me of a visit I would have been worried as well.

Like a sponge.  Tried to get to join the site and be able to post questions and such here for a broader more experienced group.  Says he wishes to get some, "time in the game under his belt."

I hope he doesn't get discouraged, I am rooting for the kid.

Don't let him in your shop alone yet.

Yeah, million different ways that goes sideways.  Thankfully I have the only key!!  Did give the safety speech and how sharp things can and will remove parts of you that you do in fact need.  And very quickly!!  Sometimes never to be reattached.  :BitingNails:

After the sander mishap he understands better why I don't even have the phone in the shop.

I gave him some Army issue Field Goggles.  After the first night he went to the borg and got some normal safety glasses.  Said the straps messed up his hair.  Gotta stay pretty and all that for the ladies.  Told him if you cut it short you never have this problem......:JawDrop:
