New Wiki Pages Sierra Juniper The Sierra Juniper, long known as Western Juniper, or merely Juniper, is, when not suppressed by environment, bent or twisted on rocks and steep mountain sides, a sturdy grizzly of the high altitudes ranging in size from 40 to 80 feet high with a trunk diameter of from 16 to 40 inches. It is a slow-growing, long-lived tree. The crown is open and well-rounded but the limbs may extend almost to the ground. The trunk is chunky with straight grooves and ridges, is sometimes twisted and bent, has long strong roots, and frequently divides into huge upright limbs a few feet from the base. Read more... California Juniper The California Juniper is a low open, bushy, broad round-topped shrub or tree 15 to 30 feet tall with a short, thick thrunk 10 to 24 inches in diameter and deeply infolded or fluted. It is a shaggy looking tree, generally with greatly distorted heavy branches. The foliage is cedar-like; bristly, scaly, rigid and sharp-pointed, and a pale yellowish-green color. The juniper berries, which likewise mature in the second year, are a light-reddish-brown covered by a bluish-white bloom, larger than those of most of the other junipers. Read more... Popular Post Gene Howe Posted February 25, 2019 Popular Post Report Posted February 25, 2019 Waiting for the ice to melt off the roads so I can go to town to pick up a pkg. Hope it's my router bits and not another cross stitch pattern or quilting book. Gunny, HARO50, Harry Brink and 6 others 1 8 Quote
Harry Brink Posted February 25, 2019 Report Posted February 25, 2019 It's been snowing all weekend so no wood wood working. -2* now. Over the weekend had 2 water main breaks about a block from us. Water from the first one came roaring down the alley and collected along the basement wall. Had about 1/2" that I used the shop vac on and moved stuff to higher ground. Early Sunday morning it broke again but closer this time! More water but most everything was already moved. It came thru the neighbors yard, down the stairs and a bigger area this time! Had a 3" water mark on the garage door and the wheels on the car was up to the rim! The garage is a sheet of ice. Haven't gone in yet to check it out but the dog tried and slid out. The only thing on the floor is some wood. Insurance company and the city have been contacted so we'll see what happens. Gerald, Cal, HandyDan and 7 others 10 Quote

Ron Dudelston Posted February 25, 2019 Report Posted February 25, 2019 It was windy as all get out yesterday but has subsided and turned cold. I’m completing a pair of oak and walnut flag cases and just started a California king bed for a customer. Trying to figure out how I’ll make faux shiplap on the headboard and foot. Any ideas? doublej Posted February 25, 2019 Report Posted February 25, 2019 John about your post on the Western Juniper, I live in Central Oregon where this tree is very common. It's a soft wood with a lot of character that I'll turn with. Our local Government has many of them cut down citing that one plant can suck up to 40 gallons of water a day while drying out surrounding vegetation. "The goal is to nudge parts of the high desert back into a sagebrush-dominated ecosystem that provides habitat for sage grouse and room for quaking aspen, bitterbrush, mountain mahogany and other species that juniper has elbowed out." Quote from The Oregonian. Just a little of of whats happening to the Western Juniper here. Gunny, FlGatorwood, p_toad and 2 others 3 1 1 Quote
Popular Post Gene Howe Posted February 25, 2019 Popular Post Report Posted February 25, 2019 Got to town to pick up the pkg. It wasn't sewing patterns, nor was it my router bits. It was a generous gift from a good friend. The road to town was clear. But, our drive...and the rest of the acreage still has a good 10" of un melted snow. When I got back to our gate I put the truck in 4WD. Got within 100 feet of the house and, got stuck. Had to lock the front hubs and, even then it was iffy. Shoulda stayed in the tracks I made going out. But, what's the fun in that? HARO50, FlGatorwood, p_toad and 6 others 1 8 Quote
